Murphy’s Windows & Sunrooms

I am so glad I chose Murphy’s. Windows are great and price was competitive. I appreciate the fact that they cleaned everything up when they were finished. I would gladly recommend them to my family and friends!

So glad we went with Murphy’s!
Shortly after moving into our new house, we knew we needed a new front picture window. After seeing a variety of companies, Jimmy Murphy presented his windows to us and we couldn’t be happier! He was willing to work with us on type of windows we were looking for (we face west with NO shade), presented different window casement options and price ranges, installation, and the price was the best we found. They event paint or stain your trim to match what you want! They came to our house and matched our wood floor stain to the new window trim. Installers were super neat-​cleaned up our front yard and front room before leaving. When there was a slight issue I noticed with the windows, I mentioned it to the installers and they fixed it right away. My parents also had their bough window installed by them over 10 years ago and it still looks amazing! Although we were only able to do the front window at this time, we will definitely be calling them when we replace the rest of the windows in our house!

My windows are on their way, and Murphy’s has been so helpful. I moved into a new (to me) townhome last August. I quickly discovered some of the windows needed to be replaced; and over time realized I am not sleeping well due to nearby road noise. I contacted Murphy’s Windows upon a friend’s referral, and am very impressed with the service and responsiveness I have received. The owner (Jim) came out to assess what I really needed, and provided different options for the replacement of my old rotting windows, and sound barrier recommendations for my bedroom.
I am confident Murphy’s will execute as promised. I cannot wait to see the finished product, and to experience peace and quiet while backing up to a very busy road.

An Unsatisfactory Experience
This bad experience with Murphy’s was a surprise because over the last 6 years we have had the company replace a total of 7 windows, on 3 separate occasions, in our Oak Park home. This time the new windows were not replacements. They were part of a larger living room remodeling project. Two small glass block windows were to be taken out and two casement windows installed. In early October, my husband met with Murphy’s estimator and the mason who would be removing glass blocks and bricks to create a taller hole for the casements. The mason told the estimator that the opening would be 24 inches wide.
Two months later, in December, Murphy’s installer arrived the night before the scheduled installation to check out the job. He informed us that the new windows were 25 inches wide. This necessitated having the mason return to widen the holes – 3 people working two days resulting in an additional, unexpected expense of $ 2,800. During this process it was discovered that not only were the new windows too wide, they were too short. The estimator had ordered windows that were completely wrong.
Mr. Murphy did provide the correct set of windows at no additional charge, but he was difficult to communicate with – not returning emails and phone calls in a timely manner. This was an attitude we could not understand since we were long-​time customers.
It took two more months for the new windows to arrive. This was a hardship for us as it was during the winter – December to February. New heating units that were to go under the windows could not be installed resulting in the living room’s being very cold. Cabinets in the basement under the new windows which had been emptied because of dust and vibration could not be used. The items usually kept in the cabinets had to remain in boxes which was very inconvenient. We also had to tolerate the unsightly drywall that was plugging the holes.
Immediately after the installation, Mr. Murphy called my husband about the balance of our bill. The down payment was half the bill. When my husband suggested that Mr. Murphy help defray our additional $ 2,800 for the mason, Mr. Murphy began yelling, became abusive, and called my husband names. Then he emailed to say his lawyer was putting an interest bearing lien on our house.
Through all this, Mr. Murphy was unpleasant, unprofessional, and never acknowledged that his estimator ordered the wrong size windows. He implied that the error was, in some unexplained way, our fault. There is a lack of competence, respect, trust, and professionalism, on Mr. Murphy’s part. We do not recommend using Murphy’s Window and Sunrooms.

We bought a condo with a number of failed sunroom windows. I contacted quite a few window companies that do sunroom replacements. I got one very expensive bid for a total replacement of the entire structure and none of the others would even take the job. The reasons were centered on the job location (3^rd floor) and difficulty with using scaffolding in the narrow courtyard with trees.
I found Murphy Windows & Sunrooms and the owner, Jim, came out and looked over the site. He felt that they could do the job and gave me a very reasonable bid. We signed up, the windows were ordered and a crew came out to survey the site. The crew completed the replacement in four days. They were very professional, had excellent work ethics and did a very good job protecting the floors and walls throughout the house. Jim checked in with the install crew throughout the project and ensured that they had everything they needed to properly complete the work. Jim also provided a person onsite from his staff to monitor the whole time.
We were very happy with the quality of the work. They spent the extra time to insure the new windows were properly installed, sealed and cleaned. We have had a number of very heavy rain storms since the windows were installed and have not seen one leak.
