Manus Dental Hyde Park

I was strongly recommended expensive deep cleaning. I could not refuse it so I have to change the dentist…

The practices of this business are borderline fraudulent. After a check-​up, they said that I needed many fillings, a «deep cleaning», a full crown on one tooth, and a prescription night guard. The total for all of these services in excess of $ 4000.
I got a second opinion from Smith & Smith Smile Studio. Their diagnosis was that I needed two fillings and a wisdom tooth pulled for a total of less than $ 300.
The only conclusion that I can draw from this contrast is that Manus Dental is only interested in lining their pockets with unnecessary dental procedures to cure «problems» that ethical dental practices cannot identify. I strongly recommend that you find someone else for your dental care — Smith & Smith is an excellent option.

I’ve had only great experiences here, and I’m surprised at the negative reviews. I particularly think Dr. Morin is amazing with kids. He has my kids loving going to the dentist, and he genuinely seems to love kids which they can sense. He was recommended by my pediatrician. One day my toddler (who didn’t have many teeth yet) was dying to take his turn too, so Dr. Morin let him lie next to my son who was having his teeth cleaned, and they both were giggling and had a great time. Dr. Morin also recommended an optional sealant for my older son which I gather is a good idea and not always suggested. He’s a bit pricey with my particular insurance but I feel confident the kids are getting good care and they don’t fight me, which is worth a lot too. For me, I see Dr. Shah who I’ve always been happy with. She worked on a filling for quite a while until I was satisfied about how it affected my bite. Also the hygenist I see (the same one each time and I’m so sorry I can’t recall her name) is wonderful, very experienced and seems to really know what she is doing.

Avoid like the plague, this is one of the shadiest places I’ve ever been to. They have the worst business side ever and the dentists aren’t good enough to make it worth the hassle. They sent me to collections after months of back and forth where all I wanted was a bill so I could verify what services I was paying for. After giving them my address multiple times I *still* received a call from a collections agency even though I have not received a single bill from this office.

Came for my toddler’s first dental appointment here with Dr. Morin. He was very friendly and gentle and didn’t mind that my toddler wasn’t exactly cooperating :). For this first appointment he did an exam, a quick cleaning & floss, & a fluoride treatment — followed by a pair of tooth-​shaped toy sunglasses which were a big hit. He gave me a lot of info and was not rushed at all. The people at front desk were very helpful too.

I was a patient of Dr. Hylan-​Cohen, the orthodontist at Manus Dental and was very satisfied with the level of care I received. Dr. Cohen oversaw my Invisalign treatment until I (unfortunately!) moved out of state. She did an excellent job explaining the treatment plan and monitoring my progress — even my new orthodontist was thrilled with how my teeth had progressed under her care! She is extremely personable as are all of her assistants. I’d highly recommend her to anyone seeking orthodontic treatment in Chicago.
The Hyde Park office is staffed with friendly, helpful receptionists and I always found convenient street parking.

Spoke too soon. Just received a $ 600 bill. Sigh. Please avoid this office if you can, they’ve totally exhausted me. :(

First, the good: Dr. Baina the endodontist is a delight, and Dr. Flowers at the downtown location is also fantastic.
Second, the middling: The front desk staff is doing better recently. However, they have lost my chart (more than once) and mis-​scheduled me a couple times. So, buyer beware.
Third, the really pretty bad: Dr. McDonald overdrilled one of my teeth and hit the root. Then, instead of recommending a root canal right away, he advised me to wait 4 – 6 weeks to see if it got better. He later denied that he said this.
Fourth, the egregious: Dr. McDonald called me «missy.» I’m a 35-​year-​old neuroscientist. Don’t call me «missy.»
So long, Manus!

Ugh. This place is quite clean and aesthetically pleasing. They seem to have up to date technology; they had a cool thing for taking pictures in your mouth, and they showed me the x-​rays and photos on the TV and pointed to the areas where the issue was, which i really liked and appreciated. I’ve never had that at a dentist.
That’s basically where my positive feedback ends, though. After correctly identifying the problem — part of my filling had fallen out — the dentist proceeded to tell me I would be best off getting either a porcelain filling or a porcelain crown. She then gave me two different quotes — both of which seemed very, very pricey to me, nearly $ 500 over what I’d heard at other dentists — and told me I could choose which one I wanted. To her credit, she did explain the logic with porcelain — that it would bind better, and last longer — but she didn’t really explain the differences between the two porcelain options… I had no guidance as to which option I should choose., and the doctor ran quickly away from me to talk to someone else immediately after that quick examination, which cost $ 130.
I called Smith & Smith Smile Co., also in Hyde Park, and learned that their services were much, much less expensive. I then decided to make an appointment there. When I went to Smith & Smith, they thought I didn’t even need a porcelain filling, just a normal composite one. That option — though it probably won’t last as long — cost $ 900-​$ 1400 less than I would have been paying at Manus, and so far, I believe, has served my needs.

This is seriously the shadiest business out there. They find things «wrong» with you that no other dentist can find, do a bait and switch when you get in the office (i.e., I made an appointment for a cleaning, and all of a sudden, I need some deep clean procedure that they «must» do immediately that had never been mentioned before. This happened twice (once at the location downtown and once in Hyde Park). I fell for it the first time and ended up having to go back two more times. The second time, I refused and they said it would be malpractice if they didn’t do it. What now?), and they will lie about bills that are owed to them.
I hadn’t planned on writing this review, bygones (I’ve quit the practice). But I just got a phone call from them saying I owed them money that I know (because I had the statement) that I didn’t. What if I couldn’t have proved that? What would have happened. Shady shady shady.
I can’t trust the dental care because I don’t trust that they are actually doing what’s in my best interest, only what they can charge the most for.

Dental care is okay, but the business is dodgy. I was a patient of Dr. Rudolph for several years, but the last time I stepped foot into Manus Hyde Park was summer 2012.
I received a check in the mail the other day with no information – no letter, no notation, nada to explain what it was. I phoned to find out what was going on. The receptionist was clueless at first. She finally told me that it was likely a refund for overpayment (my insurance covered more than the estimate). She wasn’t 100% sure – I could hear her typing over the phone to look it up, but apparently there wasn’t any additional information??? I asked why I am just now, 20+ months later, receiving the check. She told me that it was because Dr. Rudolph left the practice and they’re now closing out the books.
It is absolutely inexcusable that the only way I found out about an overpayment was because a dentist left the group. My contact information has not changed since I last saw Manus and yet they never reached out.
This raises serious questions as to their accounting practices, competence, and ethics. If you decide to use Manus, keep an eye on your accounts and coverage, apparently they don’t!

I’m with Tracey. Manus is a caring practice. I also like that they are really techy and simplify my life like adding appointments to my ical and sending email reminders for appointments. Best yet, you don’t wait. they are always ready for you.

Stay away from Manus Dental, as I had to REPORT one of their dentists, Kelli Christensen, to the Illinois Dental Board/​Society. A clear case of dental malpractice/​negligence. Christensen forced upon me a crown that was not immediately necessary, and she messed it up so bad and made the crown and an adjacent onlay so high that I was in DEBILITATING PAIN for months, causing TREMENDOUS TMJ problems. My jaw alignment got completely messed up, causing severe pain in the jaw and severe bruising of my entire side, and I had to look for a TMJ specialist and have an extensive treatment to get my bite realigned. And guess what? In the end, I had to redo all the work she has done. The level of pain, suffering, and financial damage she caused is absolutely unbelievable.
I returned to her multiple times because I was in SEVERE PAIN and she kept claiming that the crown is fine, and would r-​e-​f-​u-​s-​e to admit she did not take the impressions properly.
After having to deal with her denial and attitude multiple times it became clear to me that I was dealing with an incompetent dentist who treated me with prejudice, and who was unable to listen to her clients and acknowledge their experiences. She made me feel like I was the «crazy» one. Kelli Christensen subsequently ignored my requests for an explanation and referred me to the manager of Manus, Robin Stafford (who also goes by Robin Gay). Robin Stafford/​Gay also ignored my kind requests for response and a resolution. Overall, I was not only in severe pain because of her gross incompetence, but was also extremely offended because of the way I was treated.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Rudolf for nearly 10 years, and I absolutely adore her. She’s straightforward, down to earth, and sweet as pie. The girl who does my cleanings, Gina, is also amazing.
I’ve never had to have any major dental work done but I highly recommend Dr. Rudolf and Gina for your basic dental needs.

Well-​trained staff. However, dentists try to force you into dental work you don’t need. I got a second consultation and found that all the work ($ 2000 worth) is deemed UNNECESSARY.
American dentists try to milk your money. They view each customer as a new credit card. Manus is no different.

Do not go here if you need anything beyond a basic filling. Dr. Rudolph filed down so much of my tooth before she put the crown on that I have now been back twice because the crown and temporary replacement fell off and it hasn’t even been six months. I have 4 other crowns and they have never fallen off and they have been in place for years.
Today I came in as an emergency because the crown fell off and they gave me packets of temporary cement so that I could reapply the crown myself… and of course I do not work in the dental industry. They did offer to fit me in a few hours later though.
If you have other options, go there instead. I am almost to the point where I am willing to see another dentist and pay just so I can get a solid solution to the crown.

I had the same experience as some of the other folks here. I went here requesting a cleaning and the first visit was tied up taking X Rays and having a look in my mouth. I left without having my teeth cleaned. Surprise! They also suggested deep cleaning, that cost me $ 300 on top of what my insurance covered. I hesitated, but eventually got it done.
I came in wanting whatever my insurance would cover and it does seem like they try to upsell. I may try them again, but if they do anything other than clean my teeth like I ask them to, I’m gone.

Stay away from this Dental office; they are a huge ripoff! They’re only interested in selling you services whether you need the services or not! I went to this office back in September 2012. I made clear that I only want a routine cleaning. When I got there Kelli Christensen, D.D.S. said that since I was a first time patience I had to have full ex-rays…I told them as long as its all covered by my insurance. They assured me it was! Then the high pressure «you should have an $ 800 deep cleaning» sales job started, Led by Dr. Christensen and her Hygienist… I did not get the deep cleaning but I did get a residual bill for $ 172 even after I insisted that they make sure all services are covered 100% by my insurance. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DENTAL OFFICE!!!

I tried to get an appointment with Dr. Rudolph since all these reviews rave about her. The receptionist told me she was out of town– indefinitely. I should have realized something was odd then.
I made an appointment with Dr. MacDonald, who did try to push me into things (without even asking) which I didn’t want, didn’t need, and can’t afford. He told me I had 8 cavities, and needed at least 3 fillings, despite never having a cavity in my life and my previous dentist whom I saw 7 months ago telling me I didn’t have any cavities. My dental hygiene and diet have not changed recently, so there is no way I could have acquired so many cavities in 7 months. I am not even sure that the teeth x-​rays were of my teeth.
The appointment I wanted was for a routine biannual cleaning, but they insisted on x-​rays since I was a first time patient. Little did I know that x-​rays were their way of making more money. Besides telling me I had all these cavities, they said I required a deep cleaning that would require me to pay $ 68 out of pocket. They told me this right before they were about to start cleaning. I got up from the chair and politely told them I wanted a second opinion and no longer wished to get my teeth cleaned here.
Also the day I went, the A/​C was broken so their front doors were open and there was incredible noisy construction nearby. And the office was messy, with lots of debris on the carpet in front of reception. These offices were also very small, and there was no privacy as a patient– no individual rooms for cleaning or «x-​rays.» There were almost useless partitions between the dentist chairs.
I just moved to Chicago and picked this place because of the good reviews, but all the good reviews are for Dr. Rudolph. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This place was a massive waste of my time and my dental insurance usage.

No no no. Not the place to go.
I saw Dr. Christensen, who said that I had two cavities, and on top of that I needed a filling redone. This seemed odd to me as the filling had be done by someone pretty top notch.
I emailed the x-​ray and some photos of my teeth that Dr. Christensen took to the doctor who did my fillings, and his response was to say that not only did he not see any cavities, but he wasn’t convinced that the photos were of my teeth!
Needless to say, I am never going back to Manus.
