History

Established in 1998.

Jon Young & wife Helene Albert opened Kitsch’n November 18th 1998 when a longtime diner in Roscoe Village, just blocks from their home, became available. Working quickly, they converted it into a fun & funky 1970’s retro diner, serving up comfort food with gourmet flair.

Kitsch’n has since become a Chicago cult icon, and has been featured in Bön Appetit, on $ 40 A Day with Rachel Ray on The Food Network, and on «Best of» The Travel Channel, and «Chicago’s Best» WGN/​CLTV for their delicious food and unique atmosphere, winning numerous awards and accolades.

The name of this restaurant says it all. From all of the crazy nick knacks/​decorations, to a menu that has a southwestern flare, it is a one of a kind spot. I had the breakfast burrito, and it came loaded with fresh cooked veggies and eggs. The hash browns are very unique, but taste great. Portions are generous, and prices on par with your average brunch spot. Pro Tip: There are 2 patios and 2 dinning rooms here. The outdoor seating in the front is for patrons with dogs. The patio in the back is for non dog people. The front dinning room has a counter, and some small tables. The rear dinning room has a little more space and better for larger parties. I highly recommend checking this place out for some excellent brunch.

This place was amazing, I can’t say enough about it. We were coming into Chicago for the weekend and needed a small place to host a graduation party. We decided to book this restaurant. We had the whole place to ourselves. The interior was quaint and decorated retro style. The courtyard outback was perfect. We could go back and forth inside and outside during our time there. There are different party themes to choose and we chose a bbq theme. The owner cooked right outside for us. The burgers, chicken and ribs were AMAZING! We has an open bar for 3 hours. We were able to serve a signature cocktail. Everything was just petfect. This place was very family friendly. Between the owner and his manager Kathleen, they made our party petfect the and exceeded our expectations. A+

Not bad of a place as a whole, but definitely a «meh» experience. I sat outside, but before I did, I was told I could grab a single table. I had to take a chair from a nearby table since it looked like the family of four nearby had the monopoly for chairs. Slightly cramped space inside (from what I could see briefly) and outside. I ordered a basil pesto omelette for brunch, and it was very bland. I had to add salt and pepper, as well as hot sauce, to season it more. I wouldn’t not go there again, but I’m not dying to go back either.

Great place to eat as far as atmosphere and the food is delicious. My favorite is their breakfast options by far. They know how to add a little Mexican style cuisine in with there all there breakfast options to give it a little kick!!! Great place!!! Would definitely recommend!

Stopped by here for the first time and unfortunately I will not be returning. Service lacked and food wasn’t good. As being part in this industry, I understand when it’s really busy and waitresses are busy attending other people, but maybe other workers there could stop by and ask if everything is fine.

For me the best word to describe Kitsch’n On Roscoe is simply «awesome»! Extremely impressive for me (in my utmost subjective opinion, cannot be revoked nor argued!). With their food so exceptional, like what I ordered, coconut french toast with scrambled green egg and a brewed coffee. Can feel that the presentation of the food was really made with professionalism and expertise!
In addition, the place also great for unwinding and starting a good day.
Staffs are also very humble and helping. They would provide you service with quality performance that any other restaurants are inconsistent to give.
Nothing else to say but commend and recommend this place!

This place was accommodating to my little family. They have a small front area, but don’t let that fool you as there is a rear seating area as well as a patio, so it’s deceptively large. We ordered a pesto omelette and the crab cake Benedict, which were both good. The food is a touch on the greasy side and the portions are on the modest (but not small) side. Their hash browns are very unique and good. They are almost like shoestring potatoes that haven’t quite made it to crisp status. Think teeny tiny French fries. Good dining experience.

Kitsch’n is a great neighborhood spot on the Roscoe strip. They have a lot of good brunch items, but some of my favorites are the chilaquiles and the green eggs and ham. They also have side of candied bacon that is a must order. Huge chunks of bacon that are perfectly sweetened and crispy!
The ambiance is fun inside, lots of retro décor aging back to the 70’s. Multiple items on the menu also match back to this theme. There’s a quaint but cute patio out back that I recommend if it’s warm outside, which earns brownie points in my book!

I had a magnificent time here; not only was the food delectable, the atmosphere was both comfortable and casual. I had chicken and waffles with the fruit salad.
The staff was beyond kind and especially prompt with her service. I had mixed expectations with chicken and waffles, as they can come out poorly breaded or overly soggy. To my joyous relief the chicken was breaded and fried to perfection and the jalapeño butter added extra depth to the flavor palette offered by the sweet crisp flavors of the syrup, waffle, and chicken. I would highly suggest this locale to anyone in the neighborhood seeking an astounding breakfast.

This place has some amazing breakfast tacos among other things! I wasn’t super impressed with their biscuits and gravy but that’s a tough one to perfect. I wouldn’t suggest bringing a group of more than 6 here just because the tables are smaller. Also, the food came out SO FAST; I mean breakfast is usually served pretty quickly but I swear we ordered our food and were eating in less than 10 minutes!
The décor is very cool, they have board games and some of the hanging artwork on the wall is for sale! Definitely a fun place to check out for brunch — FYI: I have only eaten brunch/​breakfast here.

I got the Mac n’ Cheese Deluxe, which the menu implies comes with a good amount of bacon. There were evidently bacon «crumbles» but barely had any presence in the meal. I went back and asked to which the hosts graciously offered to give me a few slices of bacon, but I am still unsure why there is an $ 11 Mac n Cheese if the bacon was the mere crumbles on this.
I also got the Brownie Batter dessert, which came with a cookie so overcooked we literally did not eat it because it was so hard to break and also not tasty because of how overdone it was.
I would probably not go back to this place.

My favorite breakfast in the area. The green eggs and ham is a delicious blend of the pesto and the creaminess of the scrambled eggs. I also had the bbq chicken omelette which is guaranteed a winner. I can eat that everyday. The chicken and waffle portions are just right. Not too heavy with the breading and the waffle size is perfect. I liked the service and the atmosphere inside, both front and back. If you have room, try the very sugary and sweet Twinkie tiramisu.

I dream of going back to this place. A friend suggested it to our group while I was visiting for the Blues Festival. We enjoyed it so much on Saturday that our group of 5 – 6 unanimously voted to return on Sunday. The chilaquiles with pulled pork and salsa verde are to die for.

We came for Pajama Day Brunch on New Years. It was pretty busy and we were seated in a semi-​warm enclosed patio area. There were mounds of snow pushed to the side and tables and chairs right up on top of it… not the coziest ambiance. But the PJ theme was fun.
I honestly was pretty disappointed with all the food that was ordered. I dont think anyone in our party of 8 loved their dish. I ordered the mac and cheese and it was missing something… couldn’t quite put my finger on it. The grilled cheese, chicken and waffles, breakfast burrito, was all meh. The french toast was probably one of the better dishes but it still wasnt that great. The drinks were a little overpriced for the dive-​y feel. Don’t think I’ll be back!

Chill local brunch place. It’s a more of 2 – 4 friend environment. Service was kind and got the food pretty quickly. Went there around 12pm on a Saturday and was seated immediately. Loved the awesome décor feel.
For food I thought my breakfast burrito was great, but nothing too memorable. The cheese was good within the burrito. This was the first time I had hash brown in string form.

«Awful waffle» …Waffles were advertised as two waffles when in reality we were served only two quarters of a waffle, not 2 whole. Chicken was bland and even the fruits were nasty. The momosa, taste like vomit… don’t waste your time or money.

I was going to say in this review that the way to my heart is through chilaquiles, but really, it’s through salsa verde. You should always opt for the sub of slow roasted pork with salsa verde because who wants bacon with your chilaquiles?
I also was craving grapefruit juice (random) and their juice hit the spot. Didn’t have their coffee (I BYO-​D from Starbucks, shame) but it smelled delicious and they had a spicy hot chocolate that I would have definitely taken part in.
My fiancé got what I call Boring Breakfast — you know the dish. Eggs your way, hashbrowns, choice of meat, toast. ZZZZZZZZ. He’s usually way more adventurous, but he wanted something basic and said it was great.
I didn’t have room for any of that nonsense, though. I was on a chilaquile mission and that mission was verily accomplished.

This is my favorite brunch restaurant in the city hands down! While it is slightly pricey, the food is so good it is worth the splurge. I’ve tried their Huevos Locos, the Candied Bacon Brunch BLT, the Breakfast Tacos and the Kitsch’n Chilaquiles, all were delicious and creative recipes packed full of flavor. Make sure to have a mimosa! They are also very family friendly, my 5 year old son likes to come here too. They serve the kids meal in a vintage lunch box and they get a toy, which he loves. The décor is also really fun and colorful, full all kinds of retro goodies. Sit on the patio in the summer if you can get a spot, it’s great for people watching and pet friendly.

Went to Kitsch’n on Roscoe with two others for brunch on Sunday around 11:45 am. We just beat the rush as there must have been 10 – 12 people that piled in shortly there after (it’s a pretty small place). Definitely take a look around at the décor when you go; it’s one of the more eclectic diners I’ve ever seen!
I ordered the BBQ chicken omelette while my friends got the «phat jacks» and the chicken and waffles. Everything is solid! Portion sizes are pretty good but smaller than other diners. Nothing about the food really stood out to me hence the 3 star rating. Service was really good however and the food came out fast.
Not the place for a gourmet brunch but if you’re looking for something quick and easy this is a good place to hit up!

I arrived for brunch on a Sunday with the boyfriend, who recommended the place for its amazing food. Unfortunately for me, Kitch’n was oversold.
There wasn’t a wait, and we were seated somewhat promptly, but I felt as though the waitress pressed us for our order, and I tend to make poor food selections when rushed. My meal began with a warm mimosa; the perfect compliment to those warm, pre-​Summer days. The drink was both forgettable and regrettable.
I then ordered the Carnitas Tacos, which were bland, small in number, and just disappointing. Two flour tortillas with a dollop of pork and a greasy side of those same tortillas, only deep-​fried: $ 9.99.
Doing the math, my Kitsch’n experience just didn’t add up to a good value or a decent meal, for that matter. I’d like to say I’d give it another try, but there are plenty of other reviewers here who have done so and came away further convinced of the level of disappointment contained within. Never the same fool twice.

Walked into this place and really dug the vibe. The piped music was reggae and soul… we were feeling it. We were greeted right away and led to a table on the covered, heated patio. Nice touch. We liked the shabby, nostalgic, hipster feel of the place, and the service was pretty good as well.
The food was pretty good… I had the bbq chicken omelette and the hubs had… hmmmm, I don’t even remember, but it was tasty. I guess had it been rock star amazing, I would have remembered it. I’d like to have given this 3.5 stars, but since that’s not an option, 3 will do. Cool lil neighborhood spot.

Kitsch’n is full of a variety of quirky kitsch — get it? This is a fun, casual spot to grab brunch in the mornings, or tacos in the evening.
The past two times we have ventured to Kitsch’n, the outdoor back patio was reserved for private events, so unfortunately we couldn’t sit out back in the lovely warm weather. We sat out front in their other outdoor seating area which was still nice.
We ordered an assortment of tacos and some drinks, and started with the chips and guac (also served with comp black bean dip). The tacos were great — we tried the beef, chicken, and fish (the fish were my favorite, served with a mango salsa). I also tried the house margarita which was very tasty and not too sweet.

To read some of these reviews, you get the impression that Kitsch’n on Roscoe – seriously, a pretty terrible name for a restaurant – has been resting on its many laurels for a long stretch – if having folks like Rachael Ray blurb about your restaurant counts as a «laurel.» And for a joint that markets itself as a monument to kitsch, Kitsch’n’s collection of ‘70s and ‘80s flotsam is really kind of weak and uninspiring; I’m confident that there are garage sales that have more impressive galleries of this kind of stuff merely by accident.
But the restaurant is right on the main drag of Roscoe Village with pleasant views of the street – good for watching the parade of yuppie babies and dogs – and the front room feels spacious and comfortable given if it’s actually pretty small.
And where Kitsch’n got high marks on the morning we were there was on food and service, which is really what counts. We’re not really brunch fans – not really into the whole eggs and breakfast dessert for lunch deal – but at breakfast time Kitsch’n seems to offer a wide range of appealing choices. If my «Borracho Breakfast Burrito» wasn’t the best or most original I’ve ever had, it attained more depth of flavor than many (and not really sure what «Danish» hashbrowns are, but they were rosemary-​heavy and good, too), and my wife was very pleased with her «Green Eggs & Ham,» i.e., with pesto.
Special nod to our server, who I think was named Liz: We came up for a long weekend in Chicago with my developmentally-​disabled brother-​in-​law, who isn’t always the easiest to deal with when confronted with a menu like Kitsch’n’s, which is rather long and unconventional. He just wanted plain pancakes and sausage, which really isn’t offered as a menu item. She was especially helpful in putting together an order for him and handled him with genuine good humor throughout the meal.
Portions are very generous, but the prices still might be a notch high.
