Specialties
Strict self-defense. Hapkido focuses on winning a fight, not competing. Anything you need to do outside to protect yourself, we teach. Anything on your hand turns into a weapon: use keys, belts, sticks, poke eyes, punch and kick, throw, and immobilize.
For children: Tae Kwon Do teaches great discipline, coordination, healthy exercise habits, and how to stand up for yourself. For the parent, confidence is essential for their child. For the kid, having fun is the key to keeping the kid’s interest.
History
Established in 1971.
Hyun’s Hapkido School started in Chicago in 1971, first teaching all Cook County Sheriff’s Department and Corrections Officers. The civilian population steadily grew, and at one point he had over 40 black belts with at least eight years training in the 80s. The U.S. Naval Investigative Service (now NCIS), the Mayor of Chicago, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago have all written letters of appreciation for the school’s service to the community and law enforcement. Hyun’s Hapkido has been featured in Black Belt Magazine, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Reader, Esquire, Chicago Tribune, WGN News, ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News.
The school continues to produce students of outstanding moral character and confidence. Grandmaster Kwang Seek Hyun is now 10th Dan, the highest rank in the world, and Chairman of the Korea KiDo Association here in the United States. He continues to oversee the instruction and training of his students to this day.
