History

Established in 2011.

The name Hoyt’s comes from William M. Hoyt, a kid grocer grown to a richly successful entrepreneur. Putting himself through college, Mr. Hoyt started his own business at the age of 18 with a capital of $ 89.00. He built the original Hoyt’s (grocery) store in 1858 focusing primarily on supplying fresh fruit. Since the beginning of its opening, Hoyt’s thrived becoming a Chicago landmark of high quality food products and friendly service. Within a short time, Hoyt’s expanded its business to dairy, poultry, coffee and spice products. After tapping into these new markets, by 1870 sales had reached $ 1 million and by the 1890’s sales had over quadrupled to $ 5 million. Hoyt’s became a leading food distributer for the entire Midwest. As coffee and spices became more and more «En Vogue», Hoyt’s built both a coffee mill and a spice mill on site.

With such rapid growth it’s no wonder Mr. Hoyt became a Chicago icon. Sadly, Hoyt’s booming success came to a tragic halt. The Great Chicago Fir
