Description

Specialties

We present programs and classes dealing with fundamental economic and social issues, based primarily on the philosophy of Henry George. You will learn why poverty persists even in good times, why economic meltdowns occur from time to time. You’ll find out about Henry George’s proposal to remedy these problems, and you’ll be able to evaluate for yourself how it might apply in the 21st century. The proposal is neither «left» nor «right,» but follows from a concise concept of economic justice. Our basic course, Progress & Poverty, has sections starting in January, February, and March. It takes 5 sessions and costs just $ 25 complete. Single-session events, such as lectures, films, and even a loop tour, are free (donations welcome). History

Established in 1934.

The original Henry George School (which still exists) was founded in New York City in 1932, in response to the economic depression of that time. Branches were established in other cities, including Chicago in 1934. In 1970 the Chicago School became independent, and we are now affiliated with about a dozen Henry George Schools throughout North and Central America. For those unable to attend in a classroom, the Henry George Institute offers Internet-based courses.

Meet the Manager

Chuck M.

Manager

I worked for many years (and still do to some extent) in the business of regional planning. As I became acquainted with the ideas of Henry George, I came to recognize that they offered straightforward and effective solutions to many of the problems that planners seek to deal with. (Being a nonprofit, we have no «owner» but are governed by a Board most of whom are instructors or other volunteers at the School.)
