Gyood!

Someone already covered all of the G“y“ood jokes, so I’ll be on to the next subject (byut, syriously… cy’mon). I should have reviewed this place months ago. The world deserves to know about this shady, shady man.
I Grubhubbed this place sometime in February. I was preggers and craving that gooey, creamy, fudgy sensory delight known as brownie a la mode. When you’re pregnant, your cravings are unstoppable forces of nature. Seriously. It didn’t matter that it was blustery cold outside, snowing, or that it was 10pm. I wanted my freaking ice cream. I stumbled upon Gyood! You have no idea how excited I was that there was an ice cream delivery place. I started to rekindle my long-​severed ties with God and Santa Clause. My faith in humanity resurfaced. An angelic chorus of joy and optimism swelled within me. My heart and mouth were open, both ready to receive glorious, glorious ice cream. It would have made me a better person and a warmer lover. At least temporarily.
I only had a $ 100 bill. I let them know that. Didn’t phase ‘em. No worries. Transaction went smoothly.
Then I tasted this so-​called ice cream. I’ve never been so disappointed by dessert in my entire life. Never mind that there was absolutely no mention on grubhub that this ice cream didn’t actually contain any cream. This was terrible by even vegan standards. I was vegetarian for quite a while, I’m familiar with its incredibly sugary desserts. I slurped that swill down back in the day and loved every second of it. Both the ice «cream» and the brownie were frozen solid. Seriously? I know it’s cold out, but it wouldn’t freeze solid in the five minutes it took you to transport it to my apartment. It was clear they never even attempted to warm up the brownie. Without that temperature dichotomy, there is absolutely no point to brownie a la mode. I was pissed off that I had spent $ 20 on what was, literally, the worst sweets experience of my lifetime. I made this clear on grubhub. Mind you, no one reads grubhub reviews. People read Unilocal reviews. Silly, silly me.
The next day, my boytoy and I went out and did something. Upon return, we received an urgent message from the manager at Gyood! saying to call him back. We did. He began screaming and ranting about how we had to go to his store to give him another $ 100 bill, because we had given him a counterfeit one. He said that if we didn’t do that, he’d go to police. He kept harassing us. Calling/​screaming at us over and over again. It was pretty terrible.
Now, we don’t counterfeit money and banks don’t hand out counterfeit bills. What then would have set this d-​bomb off? Oh, a certain negative grubhub review, perhaps? Ever so strangely, we started ignoring his phone calls and never heard back from him OR the police. Huh.
AVOID.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to try it– I went there today and it is closed down and the storefront is up for rent :(

I’d just like to make it clear that their amazing hard packed ice cream is COMPLETELY VEGAN (in fact its the only vegan ice cream they have). some customers seem to have been mistaken and thought that it was dairy ice cream — it is not. but it is DELICIOUS and made with care by the fabulous people at Chicago Soydairy.

Unless your name is Doug and you monger encased meats, in my opinion, there isn’t much of an excuse as a restaurant to be open kind of when you feel like it. Now it may be considered special to some — even boutique-​like — to keep weird hours. But really, to me, it’s just annoying.
Therefore, when it took me two tries to indulge in Gyood!‘s treats (since the hours were wrong on their website), I said to myself, «their product better be awesome since their hours suck.»
Unfortunately, their lactose free soft serve, (the basis of all of their concoctions) left me as flat as its taste. While milk and I don’t like each other, it’s the rich taste of ice cream, to me, that makes the stomach pains worthwhile. My Gyoodee! (their version of a Blizzard) didn’t taste like much of anything, even with caramel and sprinkles added. And the texture was ice crystally in a way that I definitely would not put up with were it served to me at Dairy Queen. I came back with a second Groupon and bought their Gyood! Cow root beer float. All I tasted was root beer.
It was very byelow ayvreage, not gyood at all!
They do, however, have decent prices so my $ 10 Groupon also allowed me to also get a scoop of their «hard serve» gutbusting, dairytastic ice cream. And it was spectacular! Their unique, rotating flavors — I tried the Blueberry Cheesecake — are definitely worth coming back for. The mix of blueberry flavor, chunks of crust, and ice cream in my scoop was perfect. The texture was old-​timey like it had been handmade with care. It was hard enough to give it heft in the mouth but soft enough to get a nice big spoonful.
Of course, just counting this, it’s just another above average ice cream place. What makes them special is their lactose free soft serve. And I thank them for providing this service to my fellow milk sugar intolerant peeps. I just wish it tasted better. I mean, the only other thing they’re famous for is being an ice cream place that keeps crappy hours. And no place that serves anything wants to be know for that.

Tuesday night, around 10pm and I remembered I had a groupon for Gyood which was about to expire. Went with my friend for the very first time excited about eating ice cream so late in the winter time! The guy behind the counter was extremely helpful and patient while we decided what to order after analyzing the whole menu. My friend had the browny, really tasty and very sweet. I had the Gyoodee which is low fat soft serve ice cream with toppings and sauce, delicious! The place is very clean and I just love that they are open late. Excellent service, super tasty ice cream, and the are also lactose free!

It is getting one star because I have gone there 3 times and they are never open. I called once and no one answered left a message got a call back & was informed they they open later in day during winter. Went back twice now during the supposed winter hours and they were still closed. No notice on door — store hour info was never changed.
This place will never survive if that is how they think a business should be managed.

YUM! It’s the middle of winter and Gyood! has 8 flavors of Temptation vegan ice cream!!! And they’re not the standbys, they’re the more interesting flavors that are so hard to find at the grocery store or in restaurants! I had a double scoop cone with S’mores and Pumpkin Pie and it was FANTASTIC! The owner is super friendly and really knowledgeable about what is vegan, what isn’t and why, which really put me at ease. And the scoops of ice cream are HUGE! I will definitely be back! YUM!!! I can’t wait to try the floats and shakes!!! Plus they deliver!

Normally, I don’t have much interest in ice cream during winter in Chicago. But I had a Groupon-​type certificate to use before it expired at the end of the month, and we happened to be in the area.
First impressions were that the interior was very clean, but rather sterile in terms of personality. The man behind the counter (who may have been the owner) was extremely helpful and personable, offering us samples and explaining what each item was.
I went with a pumpkin ice cream sundae, with caramel sauce and nuts. The sundae was an adequate size for the price, but it came in a styrofoam cup (grr, hate styrofoam). I thought the ice cream was overly sweet, and gritty (you could really taste the sugar crystals). The caramel sauce was thin and syrupy, the nuts, unsalted.
I know Gyood is trying to fit a niche in the market by offering lactose-​free and cholesterol-​free goods, and if that is the type of thing you need or are looking for, it’s a good product for the price. Me, I will save my money for the milk-​based, butterfat variety.

Not impressed by this over-​priced ice cream place. I think that the ice cream is kind of mushy and icy all in one and I really do not like that. I placed a delivery order one time and it took them almost an hour and a half to get to me. When I got the ice cream is was still frozen, but in that time I had gotten so frustrated that I could not enjoy it. It was nothing that good. Sorry. I often joke with my friends that Gyood is B.A.D. because I just think it does not taste good. Save yourself some time and hard-​earned money and just walk somewhere. Or, if you really need ice cream, just buy some at the store and take it home with you because at least then you will enjoy it without the premium Gyood cost.

Nothing phenomenal by any means, but considering the fact that it’s lactose-​intolerant friendly, I’d say it’s pretty awesome. Not to mention the ice cream was cholestrol fee, super low fat, and low cal while still being very sweet and rich. The bad thing is, all I wanted when I was done was a glass of milk!
I think I need to come back and try a float or one of their signature flavors because I felt a little rushed and just got vanilla. Also, I’m kind of a sucker for the novelty of the décor in places that just feature desserts (think Sprinkles) and I thought this place was lacking though.

4 words: pumpkin pie ice cream

I had purchased a ChiTownDeal online coupon for $ 5 towards a Gyood! Cow (basically a Root Beer Float) or Gyood! sicle (an orange «creamsicle»). As a fan of root beer, I had to go for the float. The worker first questioned the coupon’s validity but confirmed it was fine with his supervisor (well done but –1* for not being on the same base). Now now now, I gotta give Gyood some credit for being deliciously light and sweet, yet lactose free, cholesterol free AND low-​fat: The triple crown! (+1 *) Check out the poster on their wall which compares their ice cream’s nutritional facts to that of two national chains, Dairy Queen being one.
Most concoctions they offer are made of the machine’s soft serve ice cream that’s surprisingly «water based»; No worries, it tastes wayyy better than it sounds. If you’re not into soft serve, however, they have about 6 different flavors which are scooped out of the big olé’ plastic pail and are soy-​based, lactose-​free (of course!) and vegan. When in season, I recommend the pumpkin flavor. There’s nothing better to celebrate the fall season than our native fruit the pumpkin (+1 *)!
Being that I work for a not-​for-​profit organization, Gyood has the «Gyood For You» Fundraising Program to help local organizations and schools raise money for g[y]ood causes. (+1 * cheers to that!)
Lastly, what’s with all the ! points!!! No idea other than it being the first place I’ve known that delivers ice cream at late hours! (+1 final *)

Finally a place for those of us who are lactose intolerant!
Gyood has all the options that I miss about the normal ice cream experience. Different kinds of ice cream, toppings and add-​ons. Now, that’s not to say that the «ice cream» tastes like real ice cream, because it clearly doesn’t, but it sure is gyood!
The girl that’s always there when I walk over at night is super personable and very friendly. I just learned from said girl that they deliver within a certain territory… perfect for when it gets too cold to walk to eat ice cream.

Pretty good tasting ice cream at a pretty sweet price. Service is great and the ambiance is fairly laid-​back. Parking isn’t too hard to find, but it would’ve been the perfect spot had it been closer to the train/​EL. Also, some board games and some music would definitely make it a more fun place to hang out and/​or unwind.
Nevertheless, definitely worth a visit. I don’t eat much ice cream, but when I do, I prefer Gyood!

This is a hard place to review since I had no appreciation for the lactose free nature. I did not think it tasted good at all compared to regular ice cream, but I’m sure there are many people out there that like this place. I got a large shake (ENORMOUS) with peanut butter cups mixed in. I would have like some more peanut butter cups.
The service was good and they had the White Sox game on.

I just moved into the neighborhood, and as former fat kid with an epic sweet tooth, I was happy to see this alternative ice cream place. The experience was so-​so to good.
The people there were pretty nice and it was clean and it is pet friendly (always nice, no matter how frequently I run into it) to the point of having treats for dogs. And they deliver (weird, but interesting).
But it really is a bar with a soft serve machine in a giant room. And the soft serve itself is a little … muted. Not bland or bad or anything, just not very flavorful.
I think it’s promising, and a nice alternative, but I can afford to splurge from time to time and suck in the sugar and fat.

Meh. It’s fine if you’re looking for a «healthy» alternative to plain ice cream. But there’s something weird about the texture. The ice is too big. And the flavors aren’t very flavorful.
I’m also a little annoyed about the nutritional value. They say it’s something like x calories per every x ounces. But a cone is like, 5 servings or something! So it’s not REALLY as good for you as they claim.
I guess it’s FINE for what it is. But it’s no Red Mango. Or Treats. I’ll never understand why all the Treats locations closed.

Thanks for offering healthy lactose-​free frozen treats in Roscoe Village! We will definitely be back. A couple suggestions:
You definitely need to play some fun music in your store to liven up the atmosphere. The buzz of the freezer is pretty loud, and some music would draw more people in. But not the radio — nothing is more annoying than radio commercials!
Also add another board with info about what each of your offerings are. Something colorful with pictures, maybe paint on chalkboards. Visuals will make the kids happy! With a little more investment in some fun décor people will feel right at home.
HAVE YOU HEARD OF A MEDIUM? I can understand if you were just out of the cups, but it appears that you actually have never offered a medium since you opened. You have got to have something between HUGE and tiny. It’s what the people want.

put an ice cream shop of any sort in my ‘hood and i will be there! unlike any ice cream shop in many ways: bar-​like interior, enthusiastic staff and healthy product!
along the lines of dairy queen: vanilla, chocolate or swirl and a list of mix-in’s ala blizzard. OR, choose from an ice cream sandwich, sundae, shake or various cones.
i hate to say it but i prefer dairy queen’s creaminess and prices. however, for a lactose-​free/​non-​berry chill tasting ice cream treat, it’s not so bad.
their «blizzard» sizes are a bit strange: small or crazy big gulp size… nothing in between.
