Greener Cleaner

We became aware that dry cleaning involved very dangerous chemicals called «Perc’s» — the real word is a long chemical name. Greener Cleaner does not use any Perc chemicals or any similar chemicals. This location is not where the clothing is cleaned but serves as a drop off and pick up point and they do a pretty good job. Only once did something get lost and it was later found… which can happen anywhere really. The cost is slightly more but you’re not letting poison seep into your skin so I think the price is fair.

I would say the quality of the dry cleaning is one of the highest, but this does not justify the insanely high prices and poor customer service.
First off, I dropped of my dry cleaning on a Saturday. I understood same or even next day (Monday since Sunday is closed) service probably wouldn’t happen. But they refused to have my order back until the next Friday. At almost $ 3 a shirt this should be an option.
When I picked up my order I almost walked out with only half of it because they only handed me ⁴⁄₉ shirts. Thankfully I checked before I left. The girl also had no idea how to redeem the Unilocal deal that I purchased.
Not worth the money unless you have the Unilocal deal.

Re: customer service: Had a very nice customer experience here the other day. I brought in my standard 4 – 5 shirts but I didn’t realize I was actually coming in slightly after the store was officially closed.
When I noticed I had actually interrupted the counting of the till, I asked when they closed. Denise at the counter was friendly and said something like, «we closed a little while ago, but no problem.» So thank you for not making me make a second trip! Really helped me out.
Re: the cleaning itself. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than the cleaners closest to me, but I feel it’s worth it for the environmental benefits, and it seems easier on the clothes. Also, they do send around nice discount emails from time to time.

Everyone was very friendly and attentive. Quick to help me. Insanely quick to turn around my order. I was extremely impressed with the customer service and turn around time as my order was done same day. I received an email notifying me that it was ready for pick up, which is convenient. It’s far more expensive than other places to get pants hemmed, but nice to know if I need a very fast turn around this is the place to go. I took a peak at the dry cleaning prices and they’re far more expensive than other places.

Well, this used to be a friendly and nice experience (see previous four star review). No more. Since Tiffany left, the new employees are apparently put out by my coming in and giving them business. They don’t stop what they are doing when I arrive and don’t say hi. Last time I got «how many shirts? Put them over there» (on a narrow counter that they fell off of). I am profoundly sorry that I am ruining their day. So not worth the extra cost. Sent an email regarding situation. Got a call back and was told owner would call. No call. Have spent at least a G here over the years. Apparently that is as nothing to them. I don’t expect the red carpet treatment, but these women barely acknowledge my presence. Blew it.

It’s really expensive to get clothing cleaned. I love the idea of a greener cleaner and how my stuff turns out. The service leaves a lot to be desired. The staff always act like I’m bothering them when I come in. They also don’t estimate when you stuff will be done, you just have to wait for them to tell you.

We’ve been a customer here for a while now, after moving and losing our cleaner’s down the street. While it’s not close by and we coordinate stops with other errands (we have not used the pickup/​delivery service) we are happy with the service received. The price is a bit higher than our previous cleaners, but they’re environmentally friendly and it seems like everything that fits that bill does cost more. Employees are always friendly and helpful.

Was going here for about 3 years… customer service was always amazing — the two ladies who work here are great. Though I did have two incidents where I showed up and the store was not open at 7am as posted — a big inconvienence after lugging my clothes up there, but since there are only two employees who knows, maybe one was sick, running late, etc.
My only reason for 3 stars, not 4 or 5 is the price. I get it, its «greener» so its going to be more expensive… but compared to a regular dry cleaner this place is SUPER pricey. So much so, I’m back to harming the environment.

We’ve used these guys for over 5 years, and they are consistently high quality. Their work and their customer service is excellent. Environmentally friendly, and good smelling clothes. What could be better?

This is in reference to their pickup/​delivery service. We’ve been customers for a few weeks, but this last incident was just unbelievable.
Basically they will do the functions of their business (show up, pick up, drop off, charge you, tell you what they’re charging for, follow directions) at their whims and wills and do not see the need to let you know what they’re doing. If you’re ok with this, great. But don’t expect to be able to rely on them.
General complaints:
It’s hard to get them on the phone, and even if you do, it’s hard to get anything resolved.
They don’t send statements. (They have them, it’s just too much of a hassle to send them.)
They’re disorganized and nobody who works there knows what’s going on half the time.
They just take whatever amount they want out of your card, and if your card doesn’t work they’ll keep your clothes until it does.
They don’t follow fabric care instructions.
Specific complaints:
1. So, apparently they went to charge our card and it was declined? Not clear on what happened on their end, but our card didn’t work for some reason. They called once, did not leave a voicemail, and when we called back nobody at the office knew what the call was about.
**Then our Saturday delivery did not show up. ***
Repeated messages throughout the weekend — «Where is our stuff? We need it for Monday.» Delivery comes on Monday (after I left for work without the clothes I needed) and it turns out …
***our card was declined? or something ***
That is what the call was about — the one where when we called back, nobody at the office knew what we were talking about, so there was no way for us to resolve it. And this was somehow our fault, because we’re not mind readers and missed a single phone call?
****So you took our stuff hostage, even though we needed it?****
IN WHAT UNIVERSE IS THIS ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR? They didn’t even offer a discount for missing the delivery.
3. When I got my clothes back on Monday,
****2 of my 4 sweaters were ruined****
because they obviously did not wash them or dry them on delicate as requested. Not the first time this has happened. Do not send them anything you care much about. Sheets, jeans, pillowcases, underwear, socks = fine. Sweaters, anything valuable, anything you need on a deadline = dangerous. If it’s their policy to ignore fabric care instructions they could have, you know, called and let us know that when they saw them. Ha ha ha.
4. When they made the delivery on Monday, they randomly decided not to take the bag of dirty laundry we had left for them to take. OK great. Why? Don’t know. How am I going to get this stuff washed now? I don’t know.
5. One time we sent them comforters to wash. The next day, guess what, comforters are on special! Oh, fantastic. They gave us the credit but we still don’t know if we got it or not because they don’t send statements.
In conclusion: Eek! Methinks not.

This is a great business. They are always friendly (especially the girl who often works the cash register) and do an excellent cleaning job. My clothes are always soft, smell great, and look like new after visiting the Greener Cleaner. Additionally, the «green cleaning» is very mild and does not irritate sensitive skin as other cleaner’s chemicals can.
When a stain remained on one of my tops after being cleaned they were happy to try again at no cost. In fact there is apparently one guy who is the «stain master». He happened to be out of town when my top was cleaned the first time but was in the shop when I was checking out. He took one look and said he could take care of it. So, if you have a stain make sure he is in town!
It is definitely worth being on their mailing list. They send out a coupon at least once a month. The prices are a bit high compared to other cleaners but when you factor in the quality of the cleaning (which maintains the integrity of your fibres), environmentally friendly agents, and the coupons — it is definitely worth it.
I am fully dedicated to this cleaner. I wouldn’t think of going anywhere else.

I have been a loyal customer for nearly a year now. I am amazed with the quality of cleaning done by environmentally conscious cleaning techniques. I honestly feel my clothes come out looking more vibrant and richer than other standard cleaners all while keeping the integrity of the cloth fibers intact. Standard cleaners always leave the appearance of having «overworked» the material, and after about a year of regular dry cleaning the clothing is quite dead looking. Not so with Greener Cleaner! My clothes look as good as new… And if they’ve missed something, they are always happy to correct it as promised.
I plan to continue on as a loyal patron of The Greener Cleaner. Highly recommended.

I’ve had a couple of things cleaned at this Edgewater branch of GC. One was a wool coat that had beer and a mess of winter salt stains on it. It came back impeccably laundered, and it didn’t shrink either (maybe I just got lucky). This was in January. This month, said coat which has a full-​length zipper to keep the Chicago chill out, started to malfunction. Teeth wouldn’t stay cinched. Knowing the GC has a tailoring service, I called to ask if they did zipper work; very friendly and informative staff person said it could be fixed, but it might be 7 business days (full-​disclosure; I liked that).
Took the coat in and male staff (owner?) took a look at the coat, tweaked the glider mechanism in 4 seconds, and my coat was fixed, AT NO CHARGE. He would not accept any type of payment. So I thought the least I could do was recount that story here; and also left behind another pair of dress pants, also with a zipper needing replacement (bad zipper karma this month I guess). This one did, in fact, require replacement, but I was happy to leave it with them after the gracious service I’d received with my wool car coat.

Store is unattractive inside and kind of a mess.
Initial clerk kind of indifferent while charging me for a bigger item than I had.
On return, the person who helped me, (perhaps the owner?) was very personable and adjusted the price to be more correct.
Relatively expensive (even with online coupon), but probably worth it to avoid the chemicals.
I will go back for this reason, unless I find a nicer, better-​run, non-​toxic cleaner in a nearby location.

I picked up today my white winter coat from the Greener Cleaner and it is spotless. They got wine stains out! It is a miracle. They saved my coat.
I looked at the coat up and down checked everywhere. Ok it must have shrunk or something it can’t be that perfect. But it is. Just like new. I think we can have a successful partnership. Just keep them coupons coming.

Three issues came up in my visit today to Greener Cleaners.
First, the cleaning. I took in a double-​size white down comforter. Well, befrore cleaning, it was kind of a pasty yellow color. Now, it is white again. It looks good, and it doesn’t have any icky dry cleaning smell to it. That, after all, is why I first started going to the Greener Cleaners.
Second, while the comforter was in the shop, I received an email with a few coupons, including one for 20% off cleaning a comforter IF you used it at drop-​off. Well, my former roommate, a born and bred Chicagoan, always said, ask if you can use something like that anyway. I did ask, and I was turned down. Well, okay, technically I was wrong, but a lot of times a business will give you the discount anyway. Worth a shot. I ended up using a coupon for $ 5, which was less savings than 20%, but it was something.
But THIRD — and this is the big issue — in chatting with the female clerk, I said, oh well, it was worth a shot. I said, I lost my job some time back, so I gotta try. SHE LAUGHED! I said, losing a job is not funny. SHE LAUGHED AGAIN! I left.
For customer service, zero stars. If any of you in the community want to be ridiculed by someone who stands behind a counter, then go to Greener Cleaners. If not, go elsewhere, or just don’t buy clothes that need dry cleaning.
I am also writing to the business and complaining. For the prices they charge (even with $ 5 off coupon), the public deserves decent service.

I took a formal gown here to be cleaned. Beautiful midnight blue, sleek. I just needed a couple of spots removed from the bottom. They did tell me that they wash things in water. I didn’t think anything of it… thinking that they know how to treat formal wear. THEY DO NOT! My beautiful dress is ruined. They really washed it in water as in submersion and then they dry it and press it in all its wrinkled glory! I now have a midnight blue formal gown that has pressed crinkles in it. I told them that it looks worse than when I dropped it off. They again stated that they wash everything in water. I state that being a non-​drycleaner owner… that I had no idea my dress would turn out this way and would have never had dropped it off here. They say «sorry.»
