Give Me Some Sugar is Chicago’s Premier Cake Decorating Studio. We offer classes in basic and advanced cake decorating.

Our class menu also includes baking classes like breads, donuts and pies. All of our classes are hands-​on all supplies are included in the cost.

We are also the perfect venue for your next event! We host Birthday Parties, Bachlorette Parties, Bridal Showers and Corporate events.

Kids Classes and Baking Camps are also offered.

History

Established in 2007.

After years of teaching people how to cook at cooking schools in the Chicagoland and hearing «but I could never make this at home», Chef Alekka Sweeney wanted «take her show on the road» and bring her culinary expertise into her clients kitchens. She teamed up with Roxann Krull to handle the business side of things and «viola» — Give Me Some Sugar is born.

In 2009, Give Me Some Sugar started growing some roots by hosting monthly classes in local bakeries.

Give Me Some Sugar opened it’s flagship location in Roscoe Village in the Fall of 2011.

Chef Alekka Sweeney is Executive Chef and Owner of Give Me Some Sugar, a unique business that provides culinary instruction for both adults and children in a social atmosphere. Sweeney dreamed up her company in 2006, and has since found it to be a perfect venue to integrate her culinary talents with her love of hospitality and people. «It’s just really something to get people together cooking in their own kitchens and just having a blast. Plus, you get to help them realize that they can easily make something like homemade pasta right at home.» In the two years since starting Give Me Some Sugar with her partner, Roxann Krull, Chef Alekka has appeared on the WGN Morning News and on 190 North, the popular Chicago ABC show on area entertainment, style and trends. Give Me Some Sugar has also been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Sun-​Times, Red Eye, Time Out Chicago and Daily Candy.

I took my kids and her friends for a kids cup cake decorating class today… as a birthday party event. So fun, so beautiful, and so delicious! Love it!!! I had a lot of fun helping my 4 year old. The owner is awesome! Experienced and friendly.

I took the Donuts class here and had so much fun that I decided it would be the perfect place to host my friend’s bridal shower. The Cupcakes & Cocktails shower it was a blast! Alekka and Jerry and the staff made it so easy to schedule, helped me with the food and bar setup, and showed all the guests a great time! The space is really cute and the class portion was instructive but not too technical — they kept it really light and fun and had everyone having an awesome time. I definitely plan to host other events here and would also like to come back for some of the more technical classes (macarons!). Bridal showers can be so lame with all the silly games and the awkward present-​opening portion. Not this shower! Thank you, Give Me Some Sugar!

Loved my Basic Cake Decorating class! Chef Alekka was so knowledge and nice and full of tips! She went hands on with us to help us perfect our techniques and Jerry was there to assist as well. We hosted a group of 40 for a corporate team building event and couldn’t have been more pleased with our choice! GMSS’s cake decorating classes are a great way to have fun and allow the group to connect with one another. Alekka and Mahta were a dream to work with, incredibly accommodating and the most warm, friendly hostesses you could imagine. The team surprised us by going above and beyond — choosing icing flavors in our brand colors, decorating the tables with themed accessories, and even ordering gorgeous floral arrangements in the style of our brand. Since GMSS is BYOB, we were able to bring in our own drinks — incredibly simple and saved us the cost of a bar bill that you’ll get at many other places that host classes like these in Chicago. (We recommend ordering drinks from the local Treasure Island — they’ll deliver!) The party was also staffed appropriately, with enough employees to make sure our whole group was attended to. All in all, we are so glad we chose Give Me Some Sugar! Highly recommend it for your next event!

Showed up for a class and nobody was there. Doors locked, nobody answered phone (though supposedly it was within standard hours posted on door) and nobody answered the buzzer. Nothing like rushing out of work and walking in 90 degree weather to stand around sweating for 20 min for nothing. Now off to contest the charge on my account.

My friend and I went to a Cake Decorating 101 class with a deal we found on Groupon and had SO MUCH fun learning the basics of how to (smoothly!) frost a cake and how to use all of the different metal tips to create rosebuds, seashells, zig-​zags, star-​shapes, straight lines and more.
The class was small and the teacher was patient with a great sense of humor. It made for a fun, intimate environment where I could get one-​on-​one help when needed. My friend works at a bakery and was already a little bit familiar with cake decorating, but was able to practice new things without constraint. I liked that at the end, we got to be creative and decorate our cake however we wanted. They were delicious!
We enjoyed the class so much we are already planning our next visit to learn how to fondant!

Gifted the Pie 101 class to my girlfriend for her birthday. It was a great idea! She loved it and our instructor Alekka was just awesome! I have never baked a thing in my life but I would like to believe I am now a pie making pro. If you are looking for something to do with your gf, this will definitely earn you some points.

Fun and relaxed class. I did a cupcake decorating class. Instructor was great. They show you a few techniques and ideas and then you drink some wine and let the creativity flow! I love how small the classes are, probably 12 people max. It makes a great night out.

I started off with basic cake decoration class. I was really impressed with Alekka who put efforts to accommodate my request to prepare cake and icing egg-​free. That’s a true teacher to be able to teach adjusting to one’s needs. I completed Cake Baking 101 today and learnt making some delicious eggless cakes! Loved the experience! This place was awesome! My husband and I went with the gilt city voucher for the cake decorating class. Alekka, the owner, taught the class. She was so funny, really knew what she was doing, and was very helpful. The baking area was very clean and the little shop area was so cute. We were able to take 10% off any of the items in the shop after the class. The shop had lots of fun items related to baking for sale and also little boutique-​y items (jewelry and such). Cake decorating is under-​rated in terms of difficulty! It was a good challenge. I would go back and am thinking of going back for a friends bachelorette party. At the end they box the cake up for you and you get to take it home. We ate a piece last night and it was delicious! I would recommend this place for a fun activity to do! Fun for date nights, with friends, and it is also very kid friendly.

Tried the macaron class with two of my Unilocal friends last month and had a blast. The usual chef who teaching the class was out, but the owner was an excellent teacher. The class was small, about 9 people, which made for a fun, intimate, hands-​on experience. Each person was able to participate in the demo and try it on their own. The instructions were easy to follow. At every step, the chef shared practical tips and troubleshooting ideas. I learned a lot of new tricks!
The macarons came out beautifully. The chef already pre-​made another batch to add to our supply to take home. We were able to create delicious fillings like lemon and salted caramel. We were able to take home at least a dozen each.
The store itself is very cute and nicely decorated. They sell cookbooks, baking tools, and baking accessories. You even get a discount on supplies when you buy after taking the class as well as a $ 10 voucher towards a future class.

Came to GMSS on a Groupon and just booked my second class (cupcakes and cocktails) because I had such a great time! I went to the basic decorating class and left educated, and excited to continue using the skills I learned! It is a very warm and welcoming enviornment, very laid back, yet professional. Alekka, the owner taught my class and she was very nice and gave practical advice about the world of cake decorating! They have little basic decorating kits put together that you can purchase at the end of class so you can DIY at home, which were reasonably priced. Would be a great place for a girls night, date night, or shower/​bachelorette party. You can BYOB, and they have cofee and water, etc. Really great space, company, and addition to the area! Can’t wait to go back!

Love it! Love everything about it!
We hosted my BFF’s surprise birthday party (a brilliant idea by her mom) and we had the BEST time. I showed up early to set up and the owners Alekka and Jerry were there to greet me. They’re fun, energetic, and sweet (I’m guessing from all that sugar). The same can be said about the GMSS studio — lots of pink and vintage touches. The birthday girl was excited to see her personalized Marie Antoinette sign in the window display.
Our party did the «Crazy for Cupcakes» class and Alekka demonstrated a few techniques before we each started decorating a half dozen cupcakes — 2 people in our group are on a gluten-​free diet and GMSS happily accommodated them. Once the demonstration/​practice session was done, Alekka cranked up music and next thing you know we were dancing and frosting to Jay-​Z. At the end of the class, we cut birthday cake, opened gifts, and shopped. Since we booked a private class we were given 20% off all items in the store. I walked out with a lovely apron and adjustable rolling pin.
The final verdict: I will definitely return — mostly likely for the French macarons class and donuts class! :)

I bought a certificate from Gilt for a basic cake decorating class — SO pleased! They eagerly accommodated my vegan wishes — cake and icing were all dairy/​egg free (and DELICIOUS).
Jerry was our teacher — my friend and I had a total blast with him. I have a bit of experience with cake decorating, but this was a great class to get me rolling again. Jerry was very helpful throughout the whole class — I can’t wait to try another!
Highly recommend for a fun afternoon — either alone or with a group!

I had a fantastic time Sunday morning with my girlfriends trying ti learn a new craft. The materials were plentiful and it was fun experimenting with all the different colors and designs! The instructor and staff were very welcoming and the shop is so cute and well organized!

So much fun! I bought a Groupon for the Basic Cake Decorating class, and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been wanting to take a class like this for forever.
This is not a bakery — you can’t come here and buy pre-​made goodies, so don’t try :) However, if you are looking for some cake decorating tools, they do sell them (a few pans, tips, dyes, etc.). They have a variety of classes to choose from, and you can hold an event here (like a birthday party or bachelorette party). It’s a smaller place (I think there were about 20 of us there?).
Chef did a great job of teaching the basics of cake decorating. She went slow so you could really grasp the concept before you tried it, she always made sure everyone could see, and she went around and helped if you needed it. The class was 2 ½ hours so you had enough time to learn some techniques and decorate your own 6 inch cake that you get to take home with you. We learned how to construct a cake, dirty ice, pipe a few different ways, and then we decorated our cakes. They have the cake made for you already in this class. We wanted to go out to eat after class, so they were nice enough to refrigerate our cakes for us and let us pick them up later.
I thought it was a lot of fun and would definitely come back again!

My friend and I attended the beginner’s cake decorating class. We purchased a groupon that made the class well worth it! The teacher was great! I, nor my friend are experts at decorating. We love to bake, but this is definitely a newer hobby. The teacher led us step by step through each basic cake decorating technique. She first demo’d in front of the room on her cake then sent us back to our tables to practice. The last hour of the class was spent decorating our cakes. We had a great time and were rather impressed with our new found skills! We got to take our cakes home in adorable hot pink boxes. Great Sunday morning activity!!!

I went to the cupcake decorating session with a friend. It is a BYOB event so we brought almond champagne which went well with cupcakes!

My boyfriend surprised me with a trip to Give Me Some Sugar last February for our anniversary. We attended the cupcakes and cocktails class, lead by Alekka. Let me tell you, as soon as the class began, I knew we were in for an educating, yet fun, evening! I enjoy baking, but have never really decorated! I learned so many easy decorating techniques and even bought some frosting tools to decorate my own cupcakes at home! Oh and did I forget to mention you can have cocktails while learning?!
Their shop is the cutest and the environment that the staff creates for their «students» is so refreshing and FUN! I’ve attended two cupcakes and cocktails classes thus far and am scheduled to do a couple of new classes! I can’t get enough!

I came here for the french macaron making class in late August. My hubby took me here as a birthday surprise. We had a wonderful time.
I’m an amateur baker in that I have no formal training, but I do bake very often for friends and family. I had tried making macarons in the past, but they didn’t come out very well. This class showed me exactly why.
It was a small group — just 5 students — and a teacher. We went through every step from mixing the batter to baking to making the fillings to assembling the macarons. We ended up each taking home about 50 macarons, so that was pretty great too! We also left with the recipe to make these again, as well as a template sheet with circles to use when baking these.
Our teacher was very patient and definitely knew what he was doing. I learned a a lot from him, and the class too. I would recommend this class to beginners and those with more baking experience alike.
I think they do little parties here, and I thought that would be so fun for a bachelorette or other party. A truly fun day!
