History

Established in 1946.

Our business started out in 1946 when two brothers, Donald and Alvin Flax came to Chicago from New Jersey right out of the service after WWII. Their focus was on selling art materials, particularly to the commercial art studios. After 44 years of focusing on art materials, the desktop publishing revolution forced us to change our focus. We decided to shift our emphasis to a service business: Picture Framing.

Our extensive knowledge of art materials helped us to make this transition 20 years ago. But because you can never know enough about your craft, even seasoned framers like us are continually updating our knowledge and techniques to bring you the very best in design and craft in picture framing and related services.

Don and Alvin retired years ago, but Alvin’s son, Brian, who came into the business right out of college in 1976, took over the management of the company in 1997 when Alvin retired. Today, Brian and his shop manger, Dana, are industry-certified (CPF) framers.
