Love the food here! Always so fresh… great MaiTais and crunchy egg rolls. The staff is always welcoming and friendly. I am a very satisfied repeat customer!

I couldn’t decide between chicken and beef, or between pea pods and green onions — so they made me a combination plate with all four! And served it with ginger too. Yummers. Evergreen is a classic Chinatown restaurant with regard to both food and décor, and the staff is friendly and helpful too. Plus it’s about six blocks from the South Loop Hotel where I’m staying for a book convention.

I can’t remember the last time I was here. I came here with my family after a funeral. We ordered the typical banquet meal. Some standouts were the roasted pork(did not like the pickled vegetables underneath) and the beef and gai lan. But I did not like the tilapia(oil tasted old/smoky, which imparted a weird aftertaste), sweet and sour pork(not very crispy, just felt like it was slathered in sauce). I thought it was interesting to be served a sweet ginger dessert soup with noodles rather than balls or tapioca. Additionally, when you enter the restaurant, it’s like you’re transported back to the 80s/90s. However, service was prompt although we were pretty much the only customers in the entire restaurant.

My review of this place hasn’t really changed my mind. It is still dated. Stuck on it’s hay day. Everything that you can order is basically what you can order at any take out place. Still not impress.

A family oriented restaurant. The staff is friendly and attentive. Take out or dine in, the food is consistent and good.

Coming here for years probably one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city of Chicago. Mongolian beef & salt n pepper shrimp my favorite. Very comfortable atmosphere.

About a 2 – 2.5: My co-workers and I came to Evergreen in Chinatown, as it was stated to be one of their favorite Chinese food. I was a little weary, as I haven’t had such good experiences with the eateries around here: P We were seated right away, and we tried several dishes: vegetarian egg rolls(which were okay with the sweet and sour sauce); vegetable fried rice(on the bland side); sweet & sour pork(big chunks of chicken in a very sweet sauce; fried tofu(the tofu was fried, but the sauce was a bit watered down); Lo Mein Special(had pieces of chicken, shrimp, and fried noodles — I enjoyed this most out of all); and, Mongolian Beef(I wasn’t really a fan of the texture of the beef; it had a spicy kick to it with the jalapeño slices, and it was a bit too salty). We were also served oolong tea and fortune cookies for dessert. Service was pretty quick and efficient, and the place was packed during the lunch rush. +Lo Mein Special

We’ve eaten since before my parents passed away. We keep coming back. The food is always fresh an that includes the meats too. It’s noisy but a good noise. The service is excellent. Two thumbs up.

We had yet another wonderful Chinese banquet family meal here, and I just noted to myself that it’s been over 3 years since I provided my last updated review. Current owner Bing and Evergreen staff have always been reliable and consistent in providing a great, big and traditional Cantonese meal at very reasonable prices. We’ve had a lot of meals here over the years. Daughter also had her delightful and satisfying rehearsal dinner here last year that was a particular hit for our out-of-town guests and I did not even bother to review as it was par for the course for us here. Tonight’s dinner for 10 consisted of(in no particular order): — pork broth starter soup — cold pork /jelly fish /egg roll appetizer plate — seafood in taro nest — whole steamed flounder — Chinese fried chicken — beef tenderloin — rice vermicelli and veggies — pork in Peking sauce — sauteed jalapeño shrimp — double lobster — fried rice — egg noodles — black bean dessert soup — complimentary fish-shaped mango jello with cream It was pretty busy tonight and Father’s Day weekend dinners likely contributed. I’m sure we’ll be back again sometime.

You want to get on a plane and fly to Bejing and order some Peking duck? Maybe you do, but why not go to Chinatown in Chicago and order the best Peking duck offering in Chicago! Good prices, good service and excellent duck.

My family and I really like this establishment. Waiters and waitresses are friendly. Owners are really nice and the food is delicious. We love the salt and pepper smelts and orange chicken. No one else in Chinatown can prepare it as good as Evergreen!

First time eating here with friends today. Ordered the special set menu that included lobster, salt & pepper prawns, veggies with fish fillet, rice and side order of peking duck. The wait staff was very attentive and like the old school posh waiters with their waistcoats. I was pleasantly surprised the the quality of food and service. Will return.

If I hadn’t gone with people that had been there before I probably would not have stepped into it. It’s not fancy but if you look past the décor, you will not be disappointed. Just think about how you’re visiting old Chinatown. :) Went there with a 18 person party, definitely good for family dining. My favorite dishes were their Peking Duck, Walnut Shrimp, Crispy Duck Stuffed with Taro Root. The crispy duck stuffed with taro root, looks a little odd and probably sounds odd as well if you’ve never tried it. I think this is the dish I would recommend if you’re trying to venture out of your norm. The service wasn’t bad, but it did get slow towards the end of our meal because the entire restaurant was packed. But as long as you’re not afraid of asking for things, you’ll be fine. If you still have room for dessert, you should get the mango pudding in a shape of a fish. Having the pudding was refreshing at the end of a big meal. And well the fish shape is cute too. :)

Very cheap and HUGE portions. Definitely staved off our hunger for the night. Couldn’t decide where to go and this seemed at the top of the list.

I’m torn on this. The food quality is definitely 5 stars. The service is probably slightly lower and the décor a bit below that. Since we usually get take-out or delivery, I’m sticking with 5 stars for this. I could go there and eat potsticker after potsticker until my tummy burst, but all of their food is really quite good. We tried they Moy’s Special and that is probably a new favorite of mine. If you go to the actual restaurant for dine-in, it is quite dated and the staff seemed to have no issue with small children playing tag in the dining room, but I guess you’re probably not expecting a fine-dining experience heading here.

It has taken me so much to write this review regarding a dining experience… Traditionally, there is a dinner gathering proceeding a funeral and we unfortunately did not occupy the whole restaurant so it was still set up for business. We occupied approximately 5⁄7 of one half of the place(sorry no math). The other side was apparently reserved for a wedding. The boss did their part on having two polar events in the same room and had a façade set up. My low review is due to the rude staff who snapped photos to capture the happy event of a wedding with the funeral related dinner… Needless to say, my respect for the staff etiquette diminished and will not wish to come back for any planned dinner events for my immediate family.

We came here for lunch after a funeral service. There weren’t that many people there since it was around 230pm. We were served right away — probably because the order was already placed. The service was very attentive and nice. The food was decent. Nothing to complain. A decent Chinese restaurant in Chinatown!

If my father, who is a Type 2 diabetic, an antisocial agoraphobic, and an EXTREMELY thrifty consumer, still manages to be a semi-regular customer here after twenty some years, it’s probably for pretty good reason. Specifically, it’s the giant portions of high quality food at prices even he can’t pass on. The crispy skin chicken, steamed fish over Chinese greens, and soft shelled crab are all amazing and consistently delicious. Very high quality in both ingredients and preparation. Who would’ve thought the last joint on Wentworth would be the best? Really hoping it’s somebody’s birthday soon, so I can suggest coming here again.

Friendly greeting, attentive service, reasonable prices and ample portions. All and all a good experience. Happy to be able to add it to my list of we can walk here from home places. As you walk in you enter a large room, all tables no booths, no little off to the side areas, just one big brightly lit room, almost like a banquet hall, there is a small bar off to the left. They make a pretty decent Mai Tai by the way. If you’re ordering more than one dish, and you want them served together, you must tell them, otherwise they serve one dish at a time, we didn’t know this and didn’t figure it out since the server asked my husband what he wanted, then she asked me. Seemed straight forward enough. My husband ordered bean curd(tofu) with vegetables which came up first. I ordered General Tso’s Chicken and a side order of pan fried noodles, which wasn’t on the menu as a side, but they gladly said no problem, not only was it not a problem they gave me a huge plate full. Which will make for great leftovers at breakfast. I love pan fried noodles with a couple of over easy eggs on them. Everything was very good, vegetables cooked to the right stage of crispness, chicken nice and crispy with just the right amount of spice. Why not five stars? A very simple fix, please get rid of the TVs. I kept trying to enjoy my dinner when something on the screen would grab my attention, oh yes that would be Law & Order, granted they did have the sound off and the captioning on, but it still was a distraction.
