Dusty Groove

Can I give this place zero stars? Because after my experience with their mail order dept, I would. FYI: Not open on weekends. Called on a Monday morning. Spoke to some guy on the phone, think his name was Jeff. Anyways, he was extremely rude and discouraged me from completing my task of ordering. I don’t like Mondays either, but this guy was very grumpy. It was my first attempt to order and I don’t think I will try again.

I would say more like 4.5 stars. Many scarce records in reasonable shape for good prices. They also seem to grade about a half rating below the visual, though I’m not sure if that is because they play grade or if they are jus conservative.
I didn’t give five stars because they don’t have a listening station and I think that is necessary if you sell VG– records (or even VG). The guy offered to put things on the store system, but that is not very convenient if you have a stack of ten records you want to test.

I really need to avoid this place. Great selection of soul, jazz, funk, and foreign artists. Everytime I go there I wind up spending a couple hours and buying way more than I should. I like that their on-​line information regarding stock is in real-​time as well, so if there is something I am looking for that is in, I can get it and not waste a trip and still spend $ 100 per trip.
Although their bargain bin is hit or miss, for $ 0.50, it is worth it to still find some little gem, even if they are a little rough (but I have scored some brand new records in the bargain basement). And even if hit or miss, I still wind up with enough for the nice people there to give me a box to carry them in instead of a flimsy plastic bag…

Outstanding record store.
They have a large selection of both CDs and vinyl. The CDs are all in plastic sleeves with bar codes that show the first three letters of the artist’s name on the top. It makes it very easy to find a particular artist you might be looking for. Plus the jewel cases are in great shape and you don’t have to scrape off the price stickers after you buy them.
The prices are very reasonable. Lots of interesting stuff to be had for under 6 bucks. Flipping randomly through the racks will reward you with albums that you don’t see at every used record store.
The staff are really nice. There to help, but will let you browse.

not very nice people to deal with

My girlfriend and I went here on my birthday to check out their Hip Hop collection. We were visiting Chicago and wanted to check out this store based on Unilocal reviews. Their Hip Hop collection was small but we scored some really good deals. Lovely store, friendly people. Recommended spot!

Fantastic record store. Just visited for the first time and picked up several quality used records. The selection is substantial and you’ll run out of money or time before you get through a quarter of the racks. Will definitely be back every time I am in town.

If you have vinyl to sell Dusty Grove has the most generous pay out in the city for your music. I’ve done several trips here with vinyl to sell and have been very impressed!
Staff is very friendly and every time i’ve gone they were able to get me an offer within 20 minutes and no funky attitudes. Not sure why I mention this but I tend to get snotty vibes from shops in the city when I bring my music in to sell.??
They are more selective on what they’ll take than other shops. So for me that means I tend to make a 2^nd trip to other shops to unload the DG rejects. So if you have the time and patience and getting the most $ for your vinyl matters DG is the best place to start from my experience. The offers I’ve received are easily 30−40% more than other prominent shops! Nice!
Also store credit yields an added 10% more so for this vinyl junkie this is the way to go.
If you ask me, It only makes sense to have the best reputation for payouts for your music since this is the lifeblood for any used record shop. Right?

Best record store in the city in my opinion, perhaps one of the best in the nation. Great selection of records & cds in diverse genres; all used records are in plastic sleeves and most are in very good condition. Takes the «Dusty» of out record shopping a bit! :)

So if you are a serious record collector, you’ve probably heard of dusty groove. Great selection of vinyl, lots of rare sides you wouldn’t ordinarily see. They also have a wide array of CDs, again lots of rarities and imports. A must visit for record collectors. Pricing isn’t very cheap, but you can find Lps you’ll never see at any other shop.

I was pretty astonished when I found their extremely well organized online catalog – their prices were, in many cases, better than I could find anywhere else. I knew I had to go in person. My first order was a couple of great soul reissues for 10 dollars. Unfortunately one of them had a pressing defect, but they accepted the return even after their 7 day window.
Their turnover is high, and they specialize in soul and funk records. The record grades are really fair, and they do a good job in adjusting the price according to grade (while a lot of places will charge you 20 dollars for a desired record regardless of quality). Their entire stock is updated online and they allow you to hold up to 5 records. Dusty Groove also allows customers to preview any used record, though they have a staff member play the record for you. this is a bit awkward, since I don’t want to keep the employee waiting for too long, and I usually will play parts of the record that look iffy, but the practice is certainly understandable, and it’s better than having to judge records merely on appearances (it saved me from buying a pretty terrible stereo recording!).
Dusty Groove is definitely one of my favorite record stores in the city. The selection is a little small, but it is definitely strong. I’d feel comfortable sending a friend home with almost any of their records.

Dusty Groove, for years, has been known for, primarily, carrying Soul, Funk and Jazz. Admittedly, I’m more of a Rocker than is fashionable in Chicago at the moment, but, I was always impressed by their selection, and, when they expanded their Rock section, a few years ago, they have not disappointed me. They carry reissues no one else in town has, with timely price reductions (Some CDs, in particular, are put out at less than cost.).
Of course, some items are going to cost more, if they’re imports, or out of print. I picked up the excellent «Boogie!» comp (Early 70’s Australian Hard Rock and Blues Rock bands.). It was $ 20 for a two — CD set. They could have asked for more (shhhh! don’t tell ‘em.). People who say they don’t see enough, there, must not go often enough. I always find something new, and I go about once a month. THE STAFF HAS ALWAYS BEEN COOL WITH ME, NO DAGGER STARES FOR NOT BRINGING UP A JOHN COLTRANE ALBUM (I kid.). The bargain basement is a good time. Yes, I’ve actually found a few things, down there. Good Blues and Country selections, quality over quantity.

This record store has quickly become my favorite in Chicago. The store is very well organized, all of their records are in great condition, and most importantly it has an amazing selection of records! Lots of Brazilian and world music especially. Now that they’ve opened the bargain basement I just can’t stay away.

This place was everything I expected. Good prices and an amazing selection of both new and used records. They have an amazing soul and funk section. The soundtrack section is pretty legit as well. I’ll definitely be coming back here when I’m in Chicago.

Best place to shop in the city for records. A bit pricey but worth it. Knowledgable staff, clean records and wide variety. A must for any audiophile. Easy street parking located in a hipster neighborhood it is always a good shopping expierence!

I kept singing this song to myself when we visited this store. No joke — we visited on a Sunday afternoon and once I get something in my head — watch out! We were a couple miles away enjoying a day out when someone suggested that we check out Dusty Groove for some vinyl. We ran a map and grooved on over.
This place was great! We spent hours flipping through their eclectic selection. I literally sat on the floor and looked through their bargain boxes while my hubby walked through and looked at every section in the store. Our sixteen year old son was with us and he was entertained for about a half hour before he was bored. Thankfully, they had some chairs at the front of the store and he had his iPhone to provide mindless entertainment.
We loved listening to the jazz play above our heads while we reminisced about the tunes and searched for our favorites. They had a little bit of everything. Not a lot of pop type stuff, but more of the needle in the haystack stuff.
The staff were helpful and held our bags behind the counter. The setup was kinda cool. I think we have a clothespin assigned to our bag so we didn’t have to carry it around (I’m sure this helps deter the would be thieves as well). We were looking for a few specific artists when we first came in and they didn’t happen to have any of those, but their selection is rapidly changing. During our visit, a couple brought in records to sell. You know that whole ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure’ thing? I think that could easily apply here.
We left with a heavy bag of goodies and know that we’ll groove on back just the next time we’re looking for some different vinyl.

Being an amateur vinyl enthusiast, I’ve seen this store’s online catalog before. I might have even bought a thing or two in the past, who knows. But I was certainly as pleased as Punch when I stumbled upon the brick and mortar shop. I didn’t even realize it was just down the road from La Pasadita. Oh happy day!
The vinyl selection was fantastic, and the prices were out of this solar system. I couldn’t believe how much the jazz was going for – much of it under $ 10… and many Blue Note records!
I wish I had a suitcase dedicated to bringing home records, because I could have easily filled it in about 10 minutes at this shop. I’m going to have to visit the website now to order some stuff to be shipped.
