Do-Rite Donuts

I honestly can’t say enough good things about Do-​Rite. The staff is always smiling and super friendly. The donuts are some of my favorite in Chicago. They regularly feature donut collaborations that are a little out of the box but always delicious.
The line can get a little long in the morning (especially Friday) but they move customers through with great efficiency. They offer order ahead options through the website which seems easy but there is just something so enjoyable about standing in front of a walk full of doughy fried goodness and picking your sweet treats!!!
I picked up a box plus a few for my office on Friday and I was basically the work MVP of the day. Everyone loved loved loved. I am partial to the cinnamon crunch old fashioned (which the did not have Friday) but I have never had one I didn’t like.
Donuts are always fresh. Variety is always impressive. Number one tip… don’t sleep on the collaboration donuts!

I judge a donut shop based on its old fashioned, my personal favorite donut. (That being said, I don’t discriminate and love yeast donuts, cake with sprinkles, apple fritters, the list goes on…)
Do-Rite’s old fashioned was not remotely good. It was soaked with oil and felt like you could ring it out. I bought a variety dozen and the other donuts were decent. The other folks in my office didn’t seem to have an issue with the donuts (though no one was wowed, either).
So, if an old fashioned isn’t your thing, you’re probably OK here. It is very convenient to the Daley Center and the rest of the central loop. But, as compared to Glazed & Infused, there is no contest.
Sorry Do-Rite…I wanted to love you and make you an easy pit stop for after morning court calls, but I haven’t been back (and won’t go back) since my first experience.

This place is great.
I made a point to walk here before leaving Chicago and I am glad I did. I got a old fashion cinnamon sugar and a vegan chai. The old fashion was a little more flakey and less fried than most other old fashion. I really liked it. The chai was really good but it taste more like a gingerbread donut than chai. The chai was very subtle in the icing and besides that I didn’t taste it. Definitely a better gingerbread than chai. =P
The coffee was bitter, pungent. But what do you expect for a $ 1 add on. And honestly the bitter is kind of nice pair with the sweet.
If you are a donut definitely check this place out.

These are really great donuts. There just is no doubt about it.
I stopped in at around 1 pm, and they still had a large selection.
After reading rave reviews, I opted for one of the cinnamon crumb old fashioned donuts. I also asked the employee what her favorite was. She replied with the malted milk, so I ordered one of those as well.
The cinnamon crumb was still warm and falling apart. It was amazing. It was slightly oily, but it is a donut, so I am expecting that. I loved that it was an old fashioned donut, but it didn’t taste dry. Old fashioned often are just too dry.
The malted milk was good, but not my favorite. There really was no malt flavor and the portions not covered in frosting were a bit dry. I loved the addition of the honeycomb, though.
Overall, the cinnamon crumb is the way to go.
I find it fascinating that they really mainly opt to do old fashioned donuts, which are definitely not as popular anymore. I would love to taste their gluten free options.
The donuts are a bit pricy. $ 6 for 2 donuts can be hard to swallow. But it’s much easier to swallow coated in delicious sugar.

I am very disappointed in the service I received this morning. There was an older gentleman who took my order. He was in a rush to get my order because the line was long. He asked how many donuts did I want to order, I replied 8. He then asks what are the donuts. As I tell him my order he proceeds to THROW my donuts in a bag.
I requested he place my donuts in a box because I wanted more than 6 donuts to order. This should have already been common sense!
The 2 extra donuts that would not have fit in a 6 container box he THREW in a bag. When I got back to the office I opened the bag and my donuts were in crumbles (see photo).
I immediately called the store (older gentleman answers the phone) I tell him what happens and he rushes me off the phone after he requested I ome back to replace the donuts.
I already spent 30 mins total travelling to the shop and waited in line, now I had to go back and do the same process.
When I get there the same older gentleman sees me and replaces my order with the comment of «when they’re warm they break apart». Okay, since you knew this, why were you THROWING donuts in the bag!!!
This is very poor «Customer Service» and for the amount of money I spent this morning (approx $ 25) I should have received all of my order in tact.
Please train your employees AND owner (if that who the older gentleman was) on how to handle food with care. This experience was unacceptable and should never happen again.

My bf and I were hyped up in the morning to check out this doughnut place before we start our Chicago tourism. We arrived at around 9:30 am on a Wednesday and thankfully greeted with no lines. It is TINY in there and there are limited seating outside the shop that are shared with pigeons. We ordered the old fashion original glazed and chocolate glazed old fashion doughnuts. We thought they were not bad for yeast doughnuts, but we’ve had better in Atlanta. The sweetness of the original glaze grew pleasantly sweet with each bite. We were not a fan of the chocolate glaze as it tasted unfamiliar to us in a way that we did not enjoy. I also wished they had the maple bacon one available too as I like to judge a doughnut shop by their original glazed and maple bacon. Not sure if they ran out of them or just didn’t serve that one on certain days.
Also got a small coffee for $ 1 with any doughnut purchase; it’s sourced from Dark Matter. We’re unfamiliar with Dark Matter nor were we expecting much from coffee served from a doughnut shop, but upon first sip, we were intrigued by the flavor. It tasted like a medium-​dark roast with some mild bright flavors that we liked. Definitely recommend grabbing that Dark Matter joe with your doughnuts.
Next time, we would go here only during the summer as our hands were freezing in Chicago’s winters.

This Do Rite location is quite small not that they are big at all. The service was really quick and the guy taking my order was really nice. They didn’t have many good choices at 8:45am (meaning no jelly donuts always have jelly on hand) wasn’t even an option on their board. The old fashioned is probably one of their best, so get one if you go. Also tried a choc. frosted cake donut, not much flavor to it in the cake or the frosting. Had high hopes considering the Do-​Rite with chicken is unbelievably great.

It’s 8am on Sunday morning, I’m expecting this place to be pretty slow. Wrong. Within minutes there’s a line out the door into their entryway and onto the street. A good sign.
I ordered two of their gluten-​free donuts, pistachio and a peppermint crunch and two small coffees. Some quick service and a minute later I’m on the street again heading back to the hotel.
Unfortunately, the donuts tasted stale. The presentation was great, and the flavors worked but each was cold and dry in the center. I’d give Do-​Rite another try, but I hope to find fresher donuts this early in the morning.

I’ve been to do-​rite many times and think their donuts are very good. Today’s comment is about the gluten-​free donut: I’m trying to avoid wheat and so was delighted to learn that do-​rite had a gluten-​free option.
All that was left at 10am on Friday was the cinnamon sugar, so that’s what I had. Was it as good as a regular donut, no. Was it a fantastic option for people who can’t have a regular donut, yes!!! Kudos to them for that.

These donuts are perfect. Not too anything. I like that its a little stand that you can pop in and pop out.
We got 6 donuts and I tried two of them. The chocolate candy cane, and the lemon pistachio.
Wow! The candy cane one was nice for the holidays. Just a little minty crunch to add to your chocolate donut. The pistachio was art. Just lovely. I hope its always on the menu.

Buttermilk Old Fashioned: The most perfect crunchy exterior coating soft, pillow-​like dough. Dunk into their very hot coffee– it is the perfect start for a crisp autumn morning.
The inside is small, but there are a few tables outside.

Out of all the things I had in Chicago, I’m a little embarrassed to say that eating Do-​Rite donuts was my favorite meal in the entire trip.
The store front was a little hard to find on the street, but look for a red awning and a giant donut on the right. The bakery inside is enough to hold a line and cash register, theres no seating inside but there are tables outside. Behind the cash register are racks of labeled donuts. Initially, we were gonna get a handful of donuts but walked out with two dozen boxes filled with holey goodness.
FAVORITES:
+ Glazed: A regular, glazed donut is kind of boring depending on who you’re talking to, but it’s a classic and its my favorite. This glazed donut was like a Krispy Kreme: soft, pillowy, and melted in your mouth, but had the same thickness as a regular cake donut. Was very sweet but not overly sweet. Delicious!
+ Old Fashioned Donut: Crispy on the outside, but soft, Krispy Kremey in the inside. I love biting into this donut because the crunchiness is like a thick coating, but then it’s like silky-​cotton in the inside.
+ Double Chocolate Old Fashion Donut: Super chocolatey and sweet, with all the reasons why I love the Old fashion Glazed.
+ Bacon Donut: Bacon-​topped donut with a regular cake and a brown sugar icing. Came out warm. Great mixture of sweet and salty.
I even had some of these for breakfast the next day (I saved a box and stashed it in the hotel room.) Even when the donuts are a day old, they’re still delicious… just a little harder in texture. Because these donuts are so soft, they taste like a regular bakery donut the day after, haha.
Would definitely recommend to a friend, I can’t wait to go back!

Upon arriving in Chicago, I couldnt check in until 12pm. I took the train from the airport to Do-​Rite Dounts with my luggage in tote. There was a line on this rainy day but it moved pretty fast. I ordered the vegan chai (pretty decent) and the Vanilla bean glaze (superb). My only regret was not getting the dark matter coffee. I would def come back.

After visiting Do-​Rite, I think I have officially found my favorite Chicago doughnuts. Other places either don’t have enough variety, or have visually beautiful doughnuts that fall short in the taste category. Do-​Rite is the perfect combination of both. What sets Do-​Rite even further apart from competitors is their «Do-​Rite Collab» series, which partners with chefs to create limited edition gourmet doughnuts.
I got a bunch of doughnuts to split with coworkers, including:
Casamigos Fritter (collaboration special)
Pumpkin Overlord (collaboration special)
Valrhona Chocolate Cake
Cinnamon Crunch Old Fashioned
All were so amazing I can’t even pick a favorite!

I know everybody loves this place but to me it was just alright. I really think it depends on what kind of donut you like.
I had been here a few months ago around 1 p.m. and ordered one of every donut they had left. All of the donuts were hard and dry.
I decided to try again yesterday morning because I figured the fresher the better. I ordered the pumpkin cream cheese. Although I do not like cream cheese frostings or fillings, pumpkin anything makes my stomach happy.
The part not covered in cream cheese was very good flavor wise. As I said earlier, this is a certain type of donut. It’s surface is crispy while the inside is soft. I am not into crispy donuts.
It may taste good when you first buy it but If you buy more than you can finish after awhile the entire donut gets staler at a faster rate than its competitors.
I prefer donuts that are the fluffy, soft melt in your type mouth which this wasn’t. The donut does taste like it’s made fresh from scratch and not frozen or anything but I would honestly choose a Dunkin Donuts chocolate glazed over this any day of the week.

Do-​Rite Donuts was a 10 minute walk from our hotel and well worth every step!
The Carrot Cake donut with cream cheese frosting was heavenly. Seriously, it had perfect slightly crispy outside texture and moist carrot flavored goodness inside topped with a generous dollop of rich cream cheese frosting. I’d definitely have that again!
Hubby ordered the famous Valrhona Chocolate donut and was quite pleased. It is definitely a decadent donut which rich chocolate flavor on a traditional style donut (as opposed to an old fashion or cake donut).
My brother’s eyes grew big with all the tempting options inside before selecting the Cinnamon Crunch donut. This one was an old fashion style donut coated with cinnamon crumble and was quite tasty.
Overall, we were impressed with the decadent favors and fresh quality. Just wish that they offered small bottles of milk and maybe some more coffee options.

Just when I thought chivalry was dead: Do-​Rite Donuts. Specifically, Do-​Rite epitomizes Courtly Love.
— Do-Rite’s courtly love is characterized by humility (behold the humble donut form), courtesy (thanks for the great service!), adultery (You can cheat the line here and grab Do-Rite’s gourmet donuts at Dark Matter’s Osmium and Star Lounge cafes too… let’s keep that on the down low), and the Religion of Love (Oh how I worship thee, my yeast raised Valrhona-​chocolate beauty *Homer Simpson voice*).
— Amour courtois: while it’s well worth the adventure to get from my current east coast abode to Chicago to enjoy these, I must love and idolize these well-​crafted artisanal small batch donuts from afar for now.

Really tho, you don’t even need to be a hero to enjoy these earthly pleasures… Chicago is full of hedonists and likes it like that. Just be a chivalrous knight in shining armor and deliver some Do-​Rite already will ya. No one’s gotta suffer.

We’ve been working through sampling doughnuts in Chicago and, so far, Do-​Rite Doughnuts has been the absolute favorite! We dropped by at about 12:30 PM on a Saturday, which was 1.5 hours before closing. I was expecting there to be barely any doughnuts left, like what happens at The Doughnut Vault. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see there were several different options from which to choose (about 12 different kinds).
To see what other people thought, we mixed up a half-​dozen doughnuts to bring to a house-​warming party. We didn’t tell people which doughnuts were from Firecakes and which were from Do-​Rite. Guess which doughnuts everyone preferred? Do-​Rite! They must be doing the «Rite» thing here. (Sorry, I had to.) The one that looked the most appealing to us was the maple glazed bacon and we couldn’t help but eat that one ourselves before the party. It was everything we hoped it would be and more. It was fluffy, moist, bursting with flavor, the perfect combination of sweet/​savory, and had a fantastic filling in the middle that tasted like mocha. I would definitely return JUST for that doughnut.
What’s also super cool for all you gluten-​free folks out there is that there are typically three different flavors of GF doughnuts available. Although I haven’t tried on of those, I’m sure they’re just as delicious as the rest! I like how inclusive Do-​Rite is, in addition to blowing the competition out of the water.

There’s not much else I can say that has not already been said. I agree, the donuts are delicious and worth every bit of the $ 3 price tag.
The building is small and the space is cramped but there are lots of donuts to choose from.
We stopped in to buy 2 ½ dozen for the folks who were working on Saturday. Did we think a fancy, pricey donut would cure the Saturday work blues? Heck no, but we thought it would make the day a little better. Free and tasty treats. If we were wrong, we sure tried.
Of the assortment, we grabbed two gluten free donuts (birthday cake and the chocolate). Both were very good. I also really like the Vanilla Bean Glazed and Maple Bacon — — ? one.
As for prices, it is no different than any place else. You save a little if you buy a half dozen or dozen.

Where do I even begin? I was in the area on my lunch break with a coworker and decided to stop in after a disappointing lunch. All I can say is these donuts will turn any frown upside down and make you smile. I decided to try the cinnamon crunch donut (which I am craving again right now). Having the bag in which it sat on my desk in did not allow for this big donut to make it home. The aroma got to me and I caved. I could not resist the delicious smell of this cinnamon crunch treat.
The employee behind the counter was patient and helpful. The inside is small, so do not plan on coming in and staying to eat your donut. I did venture to take the maple bacon cruller home. This was another good decision on my behalf. I am very happy that I was able to stop in and try Do Rite Donuts… you can not go wrong. I cannot wait to come back!
