History

Established in 2003.

Dígame was founded by Camille Martínez, whose own study of Spanish began from scratch at age twenty. Camille firmly believes that with excellent instruction, rigorous curriculum, and a self-​directed passion to continually seek out new learning opportunities, the adult student can learn a foreign language to near-​native fluency.

Camille holds a B.A. in English & Spanish from the University of Wisconsin — Madison and an M.A. in Spanish from the Language Schools at Middlebury College.

Additionally, Camille serves as a contingency interpreter at Children’s Memorial Hospital; as an adjunct faculty member in the Foreign Language Department at Harold Washington College; and as a volunteer translator for www​.TED​.com.

«Dígame» (‘DEE gah mey’) is a formal command that means «Tell me», which some Spanish speakers say when answering the phone, or to indicate that they are giving someone their attention. Why name a language school something in English?

I recently completed a level 3 Spanish course at Digame in preparation for a 2 year stint in Peru. I have studied Spanish in the past, but hadn’t spoken it in years. I went to Digame hoping to get a refresher on Spanish vocab and grammar. Needless to say, the class was great and I couldn’t have asked for a more ideal setting. The classes are small (a total of 4 students in the one I just completed,) and allow for personal attention and lots of participation.
Camille leads the courses in Spanish and believes in participatory learning. NO long lectures and mindless work in this class. I found that my Spanish skills quickly came back and improved during the 6 week course, mainly due to the amount of conversation that I participated in during class and the quality of Camille’s instruction. While there is no room for those who don’t want to speak Spanish as a means of learning it, don’t be afraid to sign up for this class if you’re shy or uncertain of your speaking ability. It’s a very welcoming and open environment, and asking/​answering questions is as much of a priority as participating.
I highly recommend Digame! Main attractions: smail and intimate class size, participatory learning, high quality instruction, personal attention.

I have taken classes at Digame for almost 8 months now and love every minute of it. The school’s director, Camille, as well as my teacher, Noelia, are just wonderful. They are patient, kind and just fantastic.
I am in the weekly conversation classes to keep my Spanish up to par… I am not a native speaker, but have taken classes and have been learning the language for 15 years. After moving to Chicago from Miami I realized that I was quickly losing my Spanish language skills because of a lack of practice. Digame helps me to keep my skills sharp and provides me with a fun and comfortable environment to practice my spanish.

Camille, the school’s director, is candid and helpful. She understands the learning process and is generous with her time. An added plus is that she bikes to work! This means that monies collected are not contributing to congestion and smog. Learn locally in order to know globally.

I live near by and had walked by for over a year admiring the plants in the window not thinking about what Digame as a business was. Until one day I finally googled it and was impressed with the extensive offerings this seemingly modest place had to offer.
Camille is an exceptional teacher. I found her honest, extremely knowledgeable, clear and patient (even with my stubborn and selective memory for spanish). The classes are small and intimate and have a somewhat casual air so that even though I was a bit intimidated trying to learn a new language I always looked forward to going to class.

I’ve taken classes at other Spanish language centers in Chicago, but I keep coming back to Digame. Camille and her staff provide quality and fun Spanish classes. Cost per hour is comparable if not a little less expensive than other centers.
But that’s only part of the reason I like Digame. I’m at that intermediate, but not quite advanced level, where it’s hard to find classes. Camille is super-​flexible and created a class for me and my classmates. Also, the location is very cute and inviting. Camille even has hot tea on cold winter nights. You can’t beat that attention to service!
