Established in 1894.
The Clark and Barlow Hardware Co. has served customers in the Chicago area for over 100 years. A landmark business located in downtown Chicago, the original Clark Hardware was founded in 1894 by John Clark. In 1923, John Clark combined his contractor supply business with the architectural hardware business of Jack Barlow to form the Clark and Barlow Hardware Co. Joseph Sullivan purchased Clark & Barlow from Jack Barlow in 1964, and operated the business until he passed away in 2010. The business changed hands in June 2012 and is now a division of Studio41.
The business operated for many years at 123 W. Lake St. until 1980 when it moved to its current location at 353 W. Grand Ave. The new State of Illinois building needed room, so the business had to move and settled in the River North neighborhood. It was little more than sparsely occupied buildings and the East Bank Club was under construction. With great foresight, Mr. Sullivan relocated Clark & Barlow to what is now one of the top
