We are allergists specialized in treating food allergy, nasal allergies (often referred to as «hay fever» or «chronic sinusitis»), asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), hives, insect sting allergy, and more.

We are also dedicated to taking the time to listen to our patients and providing excellent service in a field of frequently impersonable care.

History

Established in 2009.

Dr. Donnell and Dr. Newhall are board-​certified Allergists specializing in listening to our patients who suffer with allergy and asthma needs. Two major challenges exist in our field: there is a true increase in allergy and asthma in our world, and there is a shortage of well-​trained, compassionate doctors who can address these needs. Chicago Family Asthma & Allergy was created with the goal to meet these challenges.

Both physicians are board-​certified in Pediatrics and are therefore able to provide excellent subspecialty care to children with allergies and asthma. However, their board-​certification in Allergy/​Immunology and training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital as well as Children’s Memorial Hospital makes them able to care for adults equally well.

My son sees Dr Donnell for his asthma. He is a top notch doctor and my kiddo absolutely loves him. He takes the time to sit down to actually discuss my son’s health and action plan. I almost feel like he schedules a little extra time with his patients so he can play Spider-​Man and magnatiles :)
That said, even though we get so much time with him, we’ve never waited more than 5 minutes for him in the waiting room or exam room. The nurses, assistants, and receptions are pretty great too :)

This whole place has been amazing. Dr. Donnell sat with me almost a year ago and listened attentively to the progression of solid foods my son had tried and what his reactions were. His explanations and subsequent voicemails were friendly, helpful, and understandable. What’s also AWESOME is how every time you call the office, a person answers the phone, and each time, I get my questions answered or helped RIGHT AWAY… and she is cheerful! I’m grateful to have an office like this to work with if my kid is going to be sacked with food allergies.

Even though this is generally a family practice (read: children), I started seeing Dr. Newhall when I was around 24 for seasonal allergies. I’ve suffered from HORRIBLE hay fever my entire life, to the point where I would have to stay from college classes because when I left my dorm room to go outside I couldn’t breathe, let alone concentrate in a lecture hall.
Now, I’m 28 and my allergies are «cured». I went through a few years of allergy shots with Dr. Newhall (and her amazing assistants) and I’m able to live a fully productive life, even in the spring and fall. I cannot say how amazing these gals are — my quality of life has GREATLY improved and I will be eternally grateful to them. I’m almost sad I don’t need to go back every week for my shots, I miss the playful banter and friendly dispositions of all the staff there.
As a side note: last year I had an adverse reaction to a set of shots I received but the symptoms didn’t show up until well after I got home. I ended up looking like Wil Smith in Hitch. I was able to call the emergency hotline for Dr. Newhall and she called me back IMMEDIATELY and prescribed me the meds which I was able to pick up at Walgreens right away. I can’t thank her enough for saving me!

Dr. Donnell is one of those doctors who you find few and far between. He spends as much time as you need answering questions and is very obviously up on all of the latest research and treatments. I’ve sent him emails asking questions about my daughter’s allergies and where you would normally get a quick response from an assistant at a different doctor’s office, I’ve gotten several paragraph answers written by Dr. Donnell answering all my questions thoroughly. In my experience, that kind of care is rare and is the sign of an exemplary doctor. Highly recommend!

They don’t even deserve one star. I went three years ago and they completely misdiagnosed me with allergens that are inaccurate. I should have asked for a different referral when my sons pediatrician mentioned the name Dr. Newhall but I I said to myself, it has been years since I went & by now it should be different but I was wrong. Their staff is absolutely terrible. My son is only 7 months old & suffering from a terrible allergic reaction that is lasting him weeks. As a concerned mother, I obviously want him to be seen and tested for allergens as soon as possible because even his own pediatrician does not know what is causing him hives this long. I called to make an appointment & the first thing they asked me was what type of insurance my son had. Once I gave them the answer they suddenly changed their tone of voice and said that they were only accepting new patients in 4 months from today’s date. That is terrible! Why should anyone have to wait that long to be seen, especially if their child’s allergy is happening now! What good will it do finding out later. That is terrible and I felt extremely discriminated by their staff. They lost us as their patients and I can assure them I wont be recommending them to any other parents!

Dr. Donnell and his staff are fantastic! Their office functions as a well oiled machine; they’re efficient and still manage to have personality. Unlike my experiences in the past, once I began the process of receiving allergy shots it took very little time to get the ball rolling. Another added bonus; they’re now offering Saturday hours! I’m so grateful to have found them and highly recommend them.

My son was hospitalized — overnight — for his asthma three times in three months. The meds were not working. Then we saw Dr. Newhall and received a new plan and he hasn’t been hospitalized in a year. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a miracle worker. Plus she’s really nice and great with kids. He received an allergy test and examination and wasn’t afraid of her at all, even after all that poking and prodding from other doctors.

I almost don’t want to write this review because she’s already so tough to get an appointment with, but I’ll do it anyway because Dr. Newhall deserves it. She is absolutely incredible with kids. My son adores her. It sucks that he has to deal with allergies and asthma, but at least he doesn’t mind going to the doctor. In fact, he told me he wishes he could see her more often! She’s wonderful.

Dr. Newhall has a cult following in chicago. Every child I know of with food allergies sees her and everyone adores her. When she left her prior practice and had to wait a certain amount of time before staring her own practice, every pediatrician and parent of children with food allergies we knew was in a tizzy waiting for her to re-​emerge. We returned to her as soon as she did and are happier with her than ever now that she has her own practice.
Dr. Donnell, her associate, is always amazing. We met with him once with we needed to gt in quickly and he was fantastic.
This is an unbeatable practice.

Incredible customer service and professionalism. They offered me a very expensive prescription for a sample. Though the Doctor was intelligent and professional, he was so personable that I felt like he was the type of guy I could have a beer with.
If it was prudent to knock a star or two off for the itching I experienced during my scratch test, I might, but that had to be done.
Highly recommended!

We normally see Dr. Newhall, but today saw Dr. Donnell. They are both fantastic. Very knowledgeable and non-​alarming They have a wonderful way of relating to our children. They make it fun for them and do a great job of explaining what is going on. My son (who has a fear of doctors) actually likes going. I have seen other asthma/​allergy specialists before being referred to Chicago Family Asthma, and really can’t recommend them enough. They are the best!

I followed Dr. Newhall from her prior practice. I agree with the previous poster that I wish she was a pediatrician — she is top notch when it comes to pediatrics. She listens to the parents and children and has a warm and gentle bedside manner that partners with the parents and children. On numerous occasions she has gone above and beyond both during office hours and after hours for issues my daughter has had. We’ve also seen Dr. Donnell and been very pleased with him as well.
With her care, we’ve reduced my daughters meds and her health has increased. She knew just what tests to perform to pinpoint the issue rather than just throw a blanket of medicine over the symptoms.

I’ve been coming to this office for about a year and I cant say enough about Dr Donnell and his staff. They are wonderful and professional, and I recommend them all the time. I’ve had a rough year with allergies and some other health problems and Dr Donnell has been understanding and extremely helpful. Whenever I call, he’s always available or he calls me right back and he was so helpful with speaking with my other doctors… and he’s super nice too! The nurses and his office staff are always kind and I never mind going to my appointments. If you have any sort of allergy, dont sit there and be miserable, make an appointment! Dr Donnell has helped me so much!

This is your allergist. Every experience I have had with Dr. Newhall has been so outstanding, I cannot say enough. She is professional, empathetic, detail oriented, and really listens to and cares for her patients. I had previously visited another allergist in Lakeview who was brusk, cold, and misdiagnosed a minor skin issue which led to a redundant skin allergy test (but still stuck me with a few hundred dollars of bills that I had to pay out of pocket.)
Thank goodness for Dr. Newhall! She immediately saw that my skin was extra sensitive, so skin-​scratch tests would not work. She was very thorough with the blood tests she prescribed. In the months since, she has personally called me twice in response to any questions I’ve had, taking the time to make sure all my questions were answered. The people who work at her office are very friendly and professional as well. I can absolutely endorse and recommend this great doctor and practice!

This is a wonderful office with great doctors, friendly staff and clean, kid-​friendly premises.
My 15-​month old daughter had an appointment with Dr. Newhall yesterday because we suspected she had a milk allergy. I was immediately impressed by the cleanliness of the reception area and the nice toys they provided to entertain my little one. The receptionist and two nurses were also very friendly. The actual Doctor’s office was full of more great toys and had a big window and a DVD player. The more distractions, the better!
Dr. Newhall was wonderful with my daughter. She was also very thorough, knowledgeable and supportive of extended breastfeeding.
Thankfully, my daughter was found to have no allergies. I wish Dr. Newhall was a pediatrician, because I would love to come back! We have been to two pediatric offices and neither has come close to this level of quality.
