I’ve been here a number of times and I have, unfortunately, lowered my expectations so I don’t get too riled up. Too many things are stale — especially the sliced cakes. I’ve also had fruit empanadas and bread that weren’t really edible. I usually poke at the cake now to try to tell if it’s dried out or not. Not super impressed, but it’s convenient and cheap.

This place was horrible! Stale, stale, stale. I couldn’t even bite into the guava empanada. That’s how hard it was. I bought two bags of goodies and it was all old.

I came in on Saturday around 8am to place and order for a gender reveal cake. I needed it the never day and they made it for me ! Only $ 24 for a beautiful 8″ round cake! The woman who helped me was so kind and understanding. Through my broken Spanish and photos we got it perfect. She died the yellow cake pink and used strawberry mousse between three layers! Absolutely wonderful bakery and staff!

Living directly behind this gem of a Spanish bakery is dangerous! They’re super nice, have a wide selection of various sweet breads, it’s dirt cheap, and they have an entire other section where they have various cakes. $ 4.00 is all you need to be set with sweet treats for the week.

This really is one of the best panaderia’s in the city. I’m married to a Mexican man and he’s scoped out places all over Chicago and this by far is the best. Prices are insanely cheap — you can walk out of there with a sack full of sweet breads and pastries for $ 5. I love the conchas(delicious, sugarcoated shell shaped bread that’s great with a cup of coffee) as well as their oreja’s which are crisp, flaky and one of my favorites. I also ordered a half sheet cake of the tres leches cake filled with strawberries for my husbands birthday — it was out of this world. Not a single piece of leftover cake at the end of that birthday party. The price on the cake was also a full $ 40 less than BomBon over on 18th Street! Go in, grab a tray and some tongs and don’t be shy… it’s well worth the visit! :-)

Best panaderia in Chicago, I think, and I’ve tried a lot. Cheap, often a cute little kid doing her homework behind the counter, great bread pudding, fresh cookies. Plus it’s big and the shelves are a bit fancier than utilitarian. They have some beautiful fancy cakes and advertise chocolate covered strawberries, but I haven’t tried anything out of the under $ 1 range.

This place will knock you on your ass when you see the prices — you can get an entire bag of goodies for under $ 5.00. I’m talking, pastries for the whole week for under $ 5.00. My favorite, which may sound weird, I admit, is the bread they sell with butter and sugar on it. Carbohydrate heaven.

The prices are incredible — most of the pastries are around 50 cents. The bakery is pretty big and has a huge selection. I don’t know the names(cookie, pastry-thing, pastry-thing with filling, etc.), but the five or so things I’ve tried have been decent. The key thing is that it’s cheap, so you can always try more.

this bakery manages to cram so many baked goods in such a little space… it’s amazing. the pan dulce is wonderful, and the pudin melts in your mouth. i was getting worried when i got up to the register with my tray filled with sweets, but everything i ordered was less than 7dollars. everytime i walk in there, the coconut pound cake calls my name… but i get sidetracked by everything else on the shelves. i am going to blame central bakery for my expanding waistline.

Central Bakery is the best in Chicago! Their cakes and pastries are beautifully crafted and delicious, and soo affordable. For a friend’s birthday I arrived with two immaculate cakes because I couldn’t decide which he would prefer. Everyone at the party gorged on the goodies, and assumed I had spent a ton on this surprise, little did they know I’d only spent about $ 20! Also, best donuts EVER.

This bakery has been in the hood since I was a baby. My family has always bought fresh baked goods from there. If you want yummy Mexican bread go there!!! They make delicious cakes there also. My all time favorite is their sliced carrot cake. They’ve come up during these past years and remodeled the inside and added more baked goods like cheese cakes and other carb-a-licious cakes. If you’re in the hood check them out!
