This is a hidden place you’d never know of unless you live in the neighbourhood. And I did years ago. If you’re looking for dense dark bread this is your place. I’ve forgotten all about and I am so glad they’re still there. This type of bread is hard to find. I wish it was closer to me now. I will go back when I’m the area.

Best bread: Bread worth eating. I buy the Hunza bread when visiting my daughter in Chicago at Gene’s in Lincoln Square. It is sold as far east as Barney’s in New Buffalo so when I am in either area, I pick up a few loaves for the freezer. It is so flavorful and has no additives. Wish I could buy it somewhere in southeast Michigan. Will look into having it shipped.

The Hunza bread is amazing. My husband does a low-gluten diet and enjoys this bread without any problem at all, since it has a sour starter. The bakery hours aren’t convenient for people in the ‘burbs…just call them to find out if they deliver to a grocery near you, most likely they do. Nice job, Bruno’s!

My favorites are Hanza’s Bread and Health bread. Health bread is amazing, I like it better than Ukrainian bread I grew up eating. Several supermarkets in Michigan sell Bruno’s

I’m originally from Finland so whenever I went back to visit family I would return with a suitcase full of rye bread. After discovering Brunos in Milwaukee I no longer have to explain myself at the customs:) I now live all around US so whenever friends come and visit they have to bring a loaf along. Love all their brands but health bread is my favorite!

Rye’s of all kinds, sour, Polish and so on. They also have wheat and a couple varieties of a health bread, one is so dense they warn you that it’s hard to cut, and they don’t offer it cut either. Good stuff! Easy street parking.

Walked right by the place the first time. It’s small, quiet, and the sour rye bread is insanely good! Definately coming back soon.

Not only is this bread good to the taste, it is a survivor. We just got back from a 7-day trip to the Canadian wilderness, and this is the only bread of several we tried that looked like bread at the end. Not only that, it still tasted great! No spoilage, didn’t dry out. They have the rye as noted below, and a good pumpernickel, perhaps others we didn’t find. They also export to specialty supermarkets(we got ours at Sendik’s in Milwaukee). Highly recommended, both for taste and durability.

Great rye bread. Unfortunately they were suffering from a power outage the day I stopped in, but still … great rye bread. Oh yes, and they carry Filbert’s Soda too.

They make good bread. Bread is ALL they sell. There are four or five types of rye. The shop has clearly been a going concern for years and years and years, a neighborhood holdout. Let’s hope it continues to survive.

This place is what makes Chicago famous for those special ethnic foods. The Polish Rye bread is fantastic. The owner of the is bakery is great to deal with. She will ship this bread to basically anywhere you want to send it. We have sent this bread to relatives who have moved out of state. Its hard getting bread like this, in other parts of the country. Bruno’s is one of those business that makes Chicago special.

I’ve been getting my Lithuanian Rye from here since I was a child. This bakery does bread only. As a child they made different Lithuanian pastries and I was always greeted with a smile a wink and an «angel wing» Not anymore. You’ll find only bread here but GREAT bread — Always consistently hearty and flavorful. The bread is dense and substantial. Makes a great strong bread to hold up to a thick corned beef or pastrami sandwich. Also, wonderful when toasted and buttered or beautiful to dip in some hearty European soup.

This place rocks. I usually don’t get all mushy over Polish rye bread, but this place has the best I’ve ever eaten. My mom is 100% Polish, so rye bread has always been in my diet. But seriously, until my husband wandered in there a few months back and bought me a loaf, I didn’t realize it could be so soft and delicious. It was like it was a completely different bread type. I ate four slices one after, I just couldn’t stop. They also make a fantastic no sugar no salt whole wheat bread. My only complaint is they open after I go to work and close before I get home, which leaves me constantly jonesing for their bread. Now I’m drooling, hope hubbie gets home before they close tomorrow or find out where these mysterious places around town they sell it.

I really like Bruno’s Rye. It’s really hearty and you can see the uncut rye kernels in the bread. A favorite, for sure. You can buy their bread around town, too.
