Alex is passionate about his work and craft and very client-​oriented. My wife and I needed nightstands for our bedroom, and because of the master bedroom layout, required them in two different sizes that aren’t always available from stores. Just as critical, we had our own ideas about the right design in terms of the position of a drawer and open slots for books, etc., which was also hard to find. And we are very picky about design and quality, as we’re living in a home we designed and built.
We found Alex online and were immediately drawn to the style of his pieces and so gave him a call. He was very helpful on his initial visit and subsequent contacts as we worked through the design and other details. Alex is quite willing to work with your suggestions and then tweak and improve them, which we appreciated. It’s obvious that his interest was in crafting a piece that would truly meet our needs and fit in our space and be well made. He even loaned us a special color chart (from his lovely wife, Jen), to help us get the color of the drawer face right.
The finished pieces are everything we had hoped for and look perfect in the bedroom. And considering the quality and the fact that you can get just what you want, Alex’s work isn’t that expensive. Alex’s furniture is beautiful and there’s nothing out there like it. Much of it is made in a mid-​century modern style, but his pieces are often more secure and solid than something picked up at a vintage market.
I first wrote Alex when I had a rather unusual request. I have a pair of Klipsch La Scala speakers that were missing the grills (the cloth part that covers the speakers) and I was struggling to find an extra pair on the internet. I went to Alex having heard good things via word of mouth and he got back to me instantly. In less than a week, he had come over to my apartment, measured the speakers, helped me pick out the wood, and completed them. I came and picked them up and they fit perfectly – better than factory made! I found a pair of badges and put them on, and they are quite handsome!
His prices were reasonable considering the custom job, and he was extremely affable.
When I came to pick them up, Alex took me through some of his other furniture that he had either made by hand or restored. It was absolutely gorgeous.
I have recently become a bit of an audio geek, collecting records and the like. If you’re the type of person that needs storage, but wants to keep it beautiful, I highly recommend you shoot Alex an e-​mail. Excellent craftsmanship. We’ve had Brokenpress design quite a few pieces (dining bench, audio credenza, walnut mantlepiece, built in shelves) and not only do they look fantastic, Alex’s input and tweaks helped really make the pieces perfect.
