Ches-A-Rena is in fact open, and according to their website, rollerskating has resumed as well as… pro wrestling? Even Butterbean, the portly exhibition boxer, has or had(saw a poster) a bout scheduled here. What an interesting venue. I just saw Coheed and Cambria here this evening with a friend and couldn’t figure out if I was at a rave or a high school dance. You enter what looks like a small office building in what is a one-horse town and climb some stairs to get to the concert area; it is actually above a Goodwill store. Look for the Goodwill and a white dome outside. The sound and lighting are both quite good. The ceiling looks rather rough and unfinished but also gives the place a cool subterranean vibe. The snack bar is smartly positioned in a separate corridor off to the right of the stage so that it’s out of the way. We didn’t order any food since we had a large meal earlier in the day(see my Cheeburger Cheeburger review), but their menu isn’t overpriced at all, and consists of burgers, hot dogs, pizza(looked and smelled good), subs, and nachos. Coheed and Cambria: The Millenials now have their own version of Rush. You were fortunate if you saw anyone over 30 there. Actually, I take that back. If you spotted anyone over 25 there, Lady Luck took a shine to you. Man was it an ideal small town Saturday night on the ass end of summer(gorgeous weather tonight). No foolin’, Cheswick’s population is just 1,899(look up Cheswick on Wikipedia)…and the venue’s capacity according to their website is 1,750! What a big deal this gig must have been for the residents, eh?
