The Mediterranean Grill

Had the falafel, humus, and Greek salad. Everything tasted great. Huge portion of hummus and pita. Side salad which came with the falafel was also huge! Falafel was very crispy (which is how I like it) and not at all soggy like many other places. Spiced very well too! Has a bit of a kick to it

We had the gyro lunch special with sides of tabbouleh and beet salad. Nice amount of food. The sandwiches had so much meat, we will probably spilt a sandwich next time. Their catering menu look delicious. Wish they did it for less than 50 people.

I found this local spot with the help of other Unilocal users and was not lead astray. It’s a cozy little strip mall spot with amazing Greek food! I had the gyro and a side of hummus and it was excellent! I’d definitely eat here again!

Summary: Overpriced knock-​off Mediterranean cuisine served by comically rude and aggressive owner Elie Harir.
The Horrendous Experience: My girlfriend and I stopped at the Mediterranean Grill this past Sunday for lunch. After reviewing the small menu, her and I placed separate orders with the cashier. The restaurant wasn’t very crowded and we were the only customers to place an order for a long while. After sitting for a bit the cashier brought out a plate of pita and hummus and placed it on our table. What followed was a classic confusion in which I thought my girlfriend had ordered the hummus and she thought I had ordered it. Needless to say we were famished and proceeded to snack on it. Moments later the rest of our food arrived. While we were eating our sandwiches the manager and chef Elie Harir came to our table for what at first seemed like a courteous check-​in on how everything tasted. Instead, he began to shout at us saying we had stolen the pita and hummus and he wanted to know if we were going to pay for it. We were shocked and had no idea what he was talking about. It was then that we figured out neither of us had ordered the hummus and the cashier had mistakenly brought it to our table. We tried to explain this to Harir but he continued to accuse us of stealing. He stormed off when we told him that of course we would pay for it. At that point we were horribly upset for being verbally accosted by Harir so we just left the remaining food and went up to pay for the «stolen» hummus. Harir came back out and when we told him that this was a simple misunderstanding he replied, «You should know what you ordered and always check with each other.» I have never met a manager who placed ALL the blame on the customer. Overall, this was by far the most insulting and outrageous dining experience I have ever had. Needless to say we will NEVER return.
Food: I grew up eating Lebanese food and love grape leaves, falafel, baklava, etc. Harir’s menu is knock-​off Mediterranean (there is schnitzel on the menu!) and the grape leaf ($ 4.50 for a single grape leaf roll!) used cinnamon in the mix! His hummus and pita plate ran about $ 7.50, what a rip-​off. If you want real Mediterranean cuisine there are so many better options than this strip-​mall sham.

I’d actually give this place 2.5 stars, but will round up since I’m feeling generous. Unilocal definitely led us astray on this one (this is NOT 4-​stars). The food was edible, but nothing special. The pita was straight out of a package (packages were laying in plain sight, so they weren’t hiding it). I got the chicken shmarma (sp?), and they didn’t cook the chicken fresh, they just had everything pre-​cooked and assembled my pita). My husband had the house something, and it tasted like the quiznoes chicken sandwich I used to get way back in the day. We bought the $ 5 for $ 10 off of Unilocal,so the meal was only $ 5, so at least it wasn’t expensive, but I was pretty disappointed.

Came here on a lonely July 4^th. No one was there when the parents & I came for lunch. Just us & the staff. I had a major craving for baba ghanouj. The baba ghanouj wasn’t what I thought it was. It wasn’t this fine smooth dip that I had at Classic Red Hots. It was coarser & had sesame seeds in it. The taste was okay. The hummus was delish! Very smooth & tasty! I could eat that hummus for days on end. The offerings were varied. They had this pickled relish on the counter with the silverware & other things. It looked good. I really need to try this relish when I come back here again. I need to come back here to get a better taste of the other offerings.

Absolutely delicious! Fresh-​tasting, fast, and hearty in portion, this place has must-​have food. The restaurant is very clean and proof of their goodness is on the walls (recognition and news articles). The kid taking our order was helpful and the food was out fast as we were the only customers. I ordered the falafel on whole grain and my husband got the house on whole. Both were great!

Grabbed a late lunch with my hubby while out on this beautiful Saturday afternoon. First visit and we ordered gyros. In a word, disappointing. Pita was stale and chewy at the edges. Meat was cut in chunks, some too large and heavy. Meat was tender but very salty. Wanted to try the baklava, but I’m purist. It must be made with many layers of phyllo; I’ve made it at home so I know how it should look and taste. The baklava on display was a phyllo dough sandwich with a thick filling, maybe ¾ inch. Not even worth trying.
The place is not really an eat-​in place. Maybe people do, as there are several tables, but the décor is spare and generic. Décor is probably not even the right word as that would imply an effort toward design.
We love a good gyro. We won’t go back.

Wasn’t bad. My gyro was a smidge on the dry side, but it did come with a side of tzatziki. I still prefer my meat to be a little more moist-​extra sauce doesn’t make up for the more chewy texture. Wasn’t over salted, like a LOT of places tends to be, and decent portion size. My wife enjoyed the chicken souvlaki. Avoid the Bavarian cream dessert-​tiny container of what tasted like low grade artificial vanilla ice cream with a nilla wafer and chopped chocolate on top. Wasn’t worth $ 3.50.

Too late to prepare and get dinner on the table myself, I turned to The Mediterranean Grill for a Pick Up order. New to the STL area & living in St Charles but finding myself in the chesterfield Valley area, I grabbed my phone, opened the map app and started looking. Ended up on Unilocal and Voilá! a love affair was formed!
Ordered hummus, dips & spreads (& salads) sampler and the Gyros platter with Greek Salad. Fantastic. Every last bite. Fed two people and we’ve got leftovers for one of us tomorrow (me!)! Chef makes great, quality, attractive, tasty food. No question we’ll be back. Oh — I forgot — the baklava was good, too!
It is a little further down the road than you think. Keep heading down the road from the Box stores going West past Long Road. Really close to the airport entrance, I think. Oh– there’s a CVS on the corner!

Went here with my mother to spend a groupon earlier this week. She’s a meatatarian, I’m a vegetarian, and it’s not often that we both leave a restaurant happy.
I had good directions to the place, but in the late afternoon, the sign was a little difficult to read. My vision is 20/​15, so it’s not my eyes. We walked in around 4:45 or so and weren’t greeted in a traditional way. We were instead told that the dinner wasn’t starting until 5, but at first we couldn’t understand him, so the experience started out a little awkward. We had a seat and grabbed some dinner menus. Mediterranean Grill was empty save for us for the majority of our visit.
After I ordered, I took in the place. Mediterranean Grill is clean, adequately lit but not overly so, and doesn’t have ugly décor. It’s simpler, like a café.
The hummus, an appetizer, is what I ordered As a picky vegetarian who dislikes most vegetable-​strong dishes, I’ve gotta order what I’m gonna eat. It was the best hummus I’ve had in my entire life. And it was so pretty — take a look; it’s the main photo for the restaurant.
Mom told me the gyro was delicious after the meal. We didn’t talk much during, which is, of course, a good sign. The server turned out to be rather nice indeed.
The crème bavaria she ordered was okay — I tried it too — and while the baklava’s flavor was good, it also seemed a little hard. Possibly overheated? I don’t know. I’m not a cook. Just an eater.
But that hummus? I’ll be thinking about it for weeks.

My family and I had «dinner» here, strongly considered leaving during the 30 minute+ wait for food, didn’t, then sure wished we had once it arrived. Kabobs were bland and boring, canned peas served with my wife’s meal were inedible. Staff had no interest in service. Can say it was one of the least appealing meals I have had in several years. Buyer beware.

I was a little hesitant walking in the door for dinner this week because the place was deserted, but I am so glad I did!
The falafel were flavorful and crispy, the hummus and pita bread were fresh, and the Greek salad was delicious! We had great service and will definitely return.

Took a friend here over lunch with a Unilocal deal.
The place was steady but not crowded. Ordered at the counter and waited probably 15 minutes for the food.
I had the falafel sandwich combo with hummus as a side (which was not advertised on their website) but was a nice surprise. The hummus was just ok. I’ve had better elsewhere, and the pita bread was not baked fresh (I saw the store bought bag it came out of) but it was warm. The falafel was among the best I’ve ever had! It had a crispy exterior with a warm and kinda creamy interior. So good that I sat there and ate it with a fork instead of eating it as a sandwich.
This place will do the job when those Greek cravings hit hard, but I’m still searching for someone that can do both hummus and falafel amazing.
Also had the baklava for dessert. It was incredibly sweet but the dough was nice and crispy.

Glad to have this place in the neighborhood when I want a quick Greek fix. Tonight I managed to order something that was not gyros (it took some discipline, but needed to happen) and was not disappointed.
I had the vegetarian stuffed pepper with couscous and a dip duo appetizer. The husband had chicken souvlaki with a salad app. The salad was really good — several different veggies and olives with feta cheese and a greek dressing. The baba ganoush (billed as eggplant dip) was had a delightful smoky flavor and a great creamy consistency; the greek salsa was tasty and fresh but paled in comparison. Ooh, and it was served with hot fresh pita triangles.
My entrée was very flavorful and had a great consistency; it paired well with the couscous. His chicken souvlaki was beautifully marinated and perfectly cooked.
Dessert was baklava (what else?!); whats not to love about layers of flaky pastry with honey.
Service was great, even though they were more crowded than usual the waiter happily took the time to answer questions and make recommendations.
This place will definitely make it on to the regular dinner rotation…

Back with a Groupon. I ordered my carryout at the register. While I was waiting, two other people came in for carryouts. It was just barely 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Got a gyro, a Greek salad and falafel appetizer.
The gyro is huge. .. so full of fabulous meat, with lettuce, onion and tomato. The tzatziki and feta were on the side, and I added them generously.
The gyro was close to perfect, but I missed Kalamata olives. The pita was warm and fluffy. I ate less than half, and the rest was two other meals. This is a knife-​and-​fork gyro.
The falafel. .. which I’ve never had. .. was crispy-​crunchy on the outside and sorta creamy on the inside. Very good. There was a sauce I dipped in, and that was good. They’re called balls on the menu. I would call them discs, but who’s worrying about geometry.
The salad was huge. Romaine, carrots, red onion, red pepper, tomatoes, Kalamata olives (no pits, YIPPEE!!!), feta, pepperoncinis and Greek dressing. All the ingredients were generous. I subbed balsamic vinaigrette for the Greek dressing. It was two separate other meals.
A great four meals.

Kid 1 was supposed to make a chicken dish for dinner. She took a nap instead so I finally got to drag her to this place I’ve wanted to try since we moved to the area. By the way… she says she’s cool.
I had a gyros preceded by a Greek salad. Fantastic salad! Loaded up with Greek olives, feta, grape tomatoes, cucumber, a midsized amount of red onions and a delicious Greek salad dressing. For dinner, I also added a pair of falafel to my gyros just because I was in the mood for some falafel.
My gyros was clearly hand-​carved as evidenced by the lack of uniformity in the size and thickness of the pieces — a great sign. They added a healthy shot of feta to the party and built the whole thing more as a platter than a sandwich. The other ingredients included olives, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. All-​in-​all, a delicious meal!
The kid went for the Elie’s Mix and started with their house-​made potato soup. I once spent a year with the Polish Army and those people certainly never made a potato soup this delicious… even though potatoes seemed to be their national vegetable.
Her entrée consisted of stir-​fried chicken, steak and potatoes in a killer sauce. It came with a side of couscous that really tied the dish together. The waiter described it as his second favorite dish after the Spanish style kabob so that entrée is now on my list for a future visit. The kid’s dinner was amazing and there was enough of it that I would be be eating it for lunch tomorrow had we not forgotten to pick up the to-​go box when we left.
We finished with baklava for me and a chocolate mousse for her. Mine was delicious and the addition of wildflower honey really punched up the flavor. I can’t begin to guess about her’s as it was gone before I thought about trying a bite.
It is worth noting that numerous Unilocalers have drawn exception with the appearance and layout of this place. Personally, I found the great food and exceptional service more than outweighed a reduced level of ambiance. I also thought that the smaller size gave it more of a bistro feel and gave it casual feel.

The wife and I were in Gumbo Bottoms aka Chesterfield Valley looking for something to eat. We used our handy dandy Unilocal app to find the Med Grill. I perused the menu and saw that they served falafel. The wife being a vegetarian is always down for some falafel and I am a bit of a gyro fanatic.
First thing that came to mind when we entered the restaurant was that it had the ambiance of a re-​purposed Subway sandwich shop. I also noticed that their online menu stated they had fries but the in-​store menu only offered bags of Lays potato chips or an apple for their sides. I went ahead ordered a gyro sandwich for myself and a falafel sandwich for the wife.
Imagine the look of horror on my face when the girl behind the counter dished some precooked gyro meat that was swimming in water out of a bain-​marie onto a cold pita. Yes, I know that most of the gyro meat in the USA is precooked but it’s so much more tastier when its been roasting on the spit or at the least grill it a bit on a flat top to get a bit of a crust on it and please, please grill the pita a bit to warm it up. The tzatziki that comes with it was also too sweet and not cucumbery enough for my liking… also they had giardiniera set out as a condiment, really?
My wife’s falafel were literally unedible.
First, I seriously question that they are being made in house. The size, shape, and consistency was unlike any falafel I have ever seen except for the frozen ones that you can buy at a grocer. They looked liked they were stamped out on an assembly line. Not only that, they tasted like the inside of a refrigerator.
I am wondering if this place has changed hand, had a menu change, or if the chef has gone lax as looking at their online menu and previous reviews it appears they have really gone down hill.

You simply can’t go wrong at Med Grill. We love the Gyro and I challenge you to find a better (and bigger) one in the St Louis area. I try to break out of the habit of always ordering it, to try something else for a change. So far, everything has been excellent. I have had the Firenze sandwich, which is mozarella, tomato basil and is good if you want to forego meat for the meal. We have also tried the House Sandwich and Elie’s Mix and the Shwarma. All are worth ordering. They are well seasoned and provide large portions.
We recently went on Saturday evening. I don’t know if they take reservations, but we could not get near the place. It’s great to see that they have cought on and are doing well.

Not that there’s not plenty of this in the loop, but I would definitely include this in a list of regular lunch spots if this was convenient to me. We went on a Tuesday, since Tuesday is shawerma day, and I’m glad we did. A huge helping of turkey (not chicken!) shawerma on a pita with hummus, tahini, and their kind of Jerusalem salad — onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, but without a ton of onion. I’m a fan. My only complaint is that it was a big oily — it broke through the pita after a bit and I had to let it drain. I don’t think this was tahini separating or something, but it was a lot of oil to come from the shawerma alone, so who knows.
The whole thing was within my semi-​official $ 8 loop lunch limit, so more points for that. If I worked in the area, this would be a regular stop. Given the amount of chain stuff in the area, it’s probably a welcome relief to those nearby. I want to try some other things, but, unfortunately… it’s 5 hours away.
