YK Kiteboarding & SUP

This place got the wrong address… the owner of the house says she lived there for 11 years never heard of YK

I’m guessing they are out of biz? Phone and website don’t work. :(

I bought a deal for stand up paddleboarding (SUP) for two for $ 80 (normal cost is $ 80 each) and was able to add a third friend for the same deal price ($ 40). There was a bit of an email mis-​communication but thanks to me calling the day before our lesson to confirm/​ask questions, we cleared things up and were prepared to paddle the next morning at 6:30 am!
Yes, a 6:30 am lesson (when you live 1 ½ hours away) is pretty crazy, but considering it was one of the hottest and most humid summers, we we never regretted the decision.
Camille was our instructor (and also handled the reservation) and we had one other lady with us, just along for the ride. We started out in the marina by sitting on a surf-​board like board and paddle out into the river. Once we got used to paddling, we worked on standing up. SCARY! All I could imagine was falling into the gross water with fish heads and dead crabs (Camille educated on why they were there) but I managed to stay above water. We continued to paddle up the river towards a bridge, enjoying the scenery and just being at peace. Then we turned around and paddled into the bay (much cleaner water!).
We were lucky it wasn’t a windy day because the few waves we did get from passing boats made it hard to balance. I can’t imagine whitewater SUPing! We also worked up quite a sweat — from the constant paddling and engaging our legs and core to stay balanced, and from the humidity. I’m pretty sure we’d sweat just as much if we just stood still.
At the end we paddled to this little beach where Camille had packed us a healthy breakfast of Greek yogurt, granola, and fruit — my kind of lady! I was worried the breakfast would be some egg sandwich or something (not a fan). She also took some pictures for us with her own camera and posted them to the Facebook page.
Then we got a ride back to the marina and got to meet Camille’s husband and adorable baby!
I highly recommend YK, it’s worth the trip if you want a lesson and to enjoy scenic views. I’m not obsessed with SUP and can’t wait to go again.

A month or so ago, I found a great deal on BuyWithMe for a standup paddleboarding (SUP) tour for two for $ 63. The S.O. and I redeemed the coupon on a Saturday morning. SUPs are basically like large surfboards that you can stand up and paddle on. You can always sit on it and paddle too, if you’re tired of standing.
We drove out to Chesapeake Beach, MD for a very early 7:30AM tour… and it takes an hour to get there from the Arlington, VA area.
We arrived at the marina, and Camille met us there to start the tour — just us and the tour guide! We paddled around the marina and down a little river for a while to get used to the feel of the paddle boards. The scenery was beautiful, with egrets and blue herons. Apparently the early morning tour was so highly recommended to me because of all the wildlife to see at that time of the day. It was quite warm, but the breeze coming off the ocean kept us cool.
Once we had fully acclimated to using the paddle boards, we paddled out to the bay. The movement of the water took a bit of getting used to, but it’s a lot of fun. We got to go pretty far out in the bay and got a great view of the coastline. We finished up the tour by paddling up to a beach, and Camille had a wonderful breakfast prepared for us as part of the package. She was a fabulous guide and was very personable. I definitely want to try SUPing again.
I would really consider Chesapeake Beach to be a great little getaway from the D.C. area — it’s relatively close, has a great beach, and is a very cute, quiet little town. Plus, you can try SUPing and kiteboarding through YK Kiteboarding.

Bought a WTD coupon for a 3-​hour semi-​private lesson and finally got around to taking the lesson. Worked with Camille out of their office and Matt was our instructor — awesome team.
Went to beach for the weekend and was «on-​call» for favorable wind conditions. When forecast looked good, agreed on time/​place and Matt met us there. Matt is a very knowledgeable and PATIENT instructor, great with beginners.
The lesson was fun and we learned a lot, but to truly grasp kiteboarding (and get on the board) need at least 6 – 9 hours of instruction.
We will definitely be taking lessons from YK again.

The YK Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Tour was amazing (Cathy was our most fabulous guide). We started out on still water and then made our way into the Bay. We braved some waves and went to a beach where Camille and Matt brought us lunch. This was the perfect DC-​escape. I felt really far from the city, but it only took less than 45 mins to get there.
The entire time was serene and I know I’ll be back! …

Very friendly, energetic, and very professional. Learning how to kiteboard with YK is the only way to go. They really care about their students!

Yes, these guys are awesome! I had taken my first lesson in FL — because I hadn’t met Matt and Camille yet. I only mention this because it allowed me to compare the two teaching styles. My lesson with Matt was much more productive. Matt moved at a pace I was capable of and got me up and riding consistently in a relatively short time.
I am up and boarding on my own but Matt and Camille continue to offer support through equipment advice and SWEET vacation package deals — Camille is an awesome cook! (I personally think they undercharge but what are the chances they read this). Matt keeps a watchful eye even when he is riding and continues to coach «hey man your butt is sticking out», «lean back more» or the ever present «SHEET OUT!»
In short, if you want to learn to kiteboard with ongoing support you need to talk to these guys.

I learned to kiteboard from YK by taking their 9 hour private course. They are friendly, organized, and they really care about their students’ progress.
The lesson got really fun in the first hour when I started «bodydragging,» which is sailing the kite without the board. At that point, I was hooked. By the end of the lessons, I felt competent going out as long as their are other kiteboarders around.
It’s an awesome sport, but learning to kiteboard with without an instructor would be incredibly dangerous. So, if you are interested in kiteboarding, I’d HIGHLY recommend Matt and Camille at YK.

This is the best and safest way to learn how to kiteboard. Wherever the wind is, these guys go. Including Outer Banks and trips to their secret spot in Mexico. My bf and I want to go with them in January. Great instructors and certified, of course. I didn’t know the first thing about kiting. They gave me land lessons before they took me into the water. Learning to kite has been super fun but I’m glad I had a strong teacher. It’s much faster to learn when someone teaches you how to avoid painful mistakes. I would give ten stars if I could. Now I’m totally hooked.
Another idea if there is no wind. Go to Assateague and call these guys. SUP’ing around the islands with wild ponies is like a mini safari. If you want to kite, book in advance!
