Sengyo Japanese Sushi Restaurant

food was always good. Service was good if Sue was there or down right rude if the other lady was there. Owner always greeted when coming in. The place was empty often, but they has a big take out biz. But they just closed over night.

I have been eating at Sengyo for years. I love their fresh sushi, friendly staff, and quiet atmosphere. It never feels like your server is breathing down your neck.
My favorite thing about this place is the wide variety of sushi rolls they serve. You will not find some of these specific roll combinations on a menu anywhere else. My favorites are the dancing eel roll (eel and cream cheese) and the Nick’s roll (crab and shrimp with crunch), which I am told is named after a frequent customer. Yes, their rolls are a little warm because the chef makes them with warm rice. I do not like cold sushi because it reminds me of grocery store sushi, so this is a plus for me.
Their hot food items are not any better or worse than any other sushi restaurant I have been to. I have had their tempura, teriaki, udon, unagi don, and katsu. They have all been good, but I enjoy the sushi better. Also worth noting — their kani soup and spicy chicken soup are fabulous. Be warned about the spicy chicken — its spicy for sure.
In the last few years they have started offering lunch specials. Affordable and filling, ¹⁰⁄₁₀.
I have never seen this place crowded — to be honest, I always worry that one day I will go out and they will be closed down. Its usually just me and maybe one other table. The server and sushi chef have been there for as long as I’ve been going there, and as far as I can tell, they are the only ones that work there aside from maybe a cook in the back. The sushi chef used to give us complimentary rolls now and again when we used to go all the time.
Our orders have never been brought out wrong and we have never had to send food back. My only complaint is that sometimes we wait a little long to receive our bill, but overall this place is absolutely fantastic and I am a happy and loyal customer.

I would say that two out of five stars is accurate for this sushi bar. The environment is small and quiet which was expected and the waitress was friendly. We went for lunch. The usual lunch sushi specials of soup and salad with two basic rolls for 10.95 $. Unfortunately, all of the rolls were poorly rolled and warm. Warm sushi is a no go for me unless it’s supposed to be deep fried. Unfortunately I can’t say I recommend it but it could have just been an off day for the sushi guy.

My family has been coming to this place at least once a month whenever we crave for a fresh, good tasting sushi with a comfortable atmosphere since 2007. In fact this is my husband’s favorite sushi place and had been coming here before I came here in US on 2007. The owner, Zoi, is very friendly and made really good sushi. One of their best is the appetizer «Seafood Negimaki». We never miss to get that everytime we go there.

This is by far my favorite sushi in the area! Everything is served so quickly so you can still enjoy the temperature difference in the rice and fish. As people have mentioned in other reviews, the night time hostess defiitly needs some work but the food makes it worth it. During the day, all of the staff is great. I would highly recommend trying Sengyo

Our server, who I believe is the lady that owns this place has terrible people skills. She seems very angry or mean from the start. She gave me the check with my appetizers. Then she came back to see if the bill was paid. Never asked me if the food was okay or if I wanted anything else.
She gave me a piss warm diet coke with ice so it all melted into a diluted soda. I would think a restaurant could at least refrigerate their soft drinks for a lunch crowd.
The food was okay at best. The rice that they used with the sushi and rolls was warm, so the fish became warm also. I don’t think that is supposed to be how sushi is made. The price was average, but what does it matter if everything else is no good. Will not return.

This place is exceptional and it’s a shame that whenever we eat here it’s nearly empty. My family loves Sengyo and I make it a point to eat here when I’m visiting from the West Coast. This place is better than any sushi spot in LA with the exception of high-​end omakase (and I’ve been to a lot of them including Katsuya). The rolls here are the best I’ve had, and everything is high quality, from the fish to the dumplings to the ginger dressing. The staff is delightful. This place deserves to be packed every night, and that’s why I’m writing this even though I rarely review on here. Sengyo is a gem that blows away every other sushi restaurant in its price range. If you’re like me and prefer quality sushi over hip atmosphere and trendy dishes, then Sengyo is as good as it gets.

The best sushi in SJ hands down. And very friendly owners. Ask for the Chris roll. It’s the bomb.

We went here for lunch. Both of us ordered the Sakura Bento. The waitress is nice. But, the food is horrible. The texture of the rolls were too wet and the rice tasted as if it was over seasoned. Nothing is worse than an overcooked rice on your sushi roll, it ruins the entire roll. My sushi also didn’t taste fresh. The Sakura Bento comes with one eel, 2 tuna, 2 salmon, and spicy tuna roll. I have to say the entire meal was hands down the worse I ever, ever had from a sushi standpoint. Even the buffet places are a bit better. Must have been an off day here, but I don’t think I’ll ever come back.

I love sushi, but there aren’t many places that satisfy my sushi fix (besides Tokyo Sushi in Tampa and Ocean Blue Sushi Bar in Clearwater, FL). We stumbled upon Sengyo because they offered a 15% off entire bill coupon on their website.
The place was small and had a decent amount of people dining. As we looked at the menu, we had a hard time figuring out which sushi rolls to get because they were all appetizing — which is a good thing. Ended up ordering the White Swan Roll (the only name I remembered), spicy scallop roll (per request), and four other rolls (one special written on their white board, spicy shrimp roll, spicy salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll). Oh, and two miso soups, too.
The miso soup was okay and the spicy tuna roll was pretty good. But despite that, I’m afraid to say that the other rolls (besides White Swan Roll) tasted very much similar, if not the same. I didn’t mind, but we ordered a variety of rolls, you know? If we wanted all our rolls to taste the same, we would have just gotten six of the same rolls. Come to think of it, I believe the sushi chef used the same spicy sauce for most of the rolls. Even funnier, most of their special sushi (and ones written on the white board) come with spicy tuna inside or on top. Spicy tuna overload? It’s like I already know what every one of their sushi tastes like now.
Anyway, luckily the White Swan Roll (with white tuna, crunch, roe topped with yellowtail) tasted different. It wasn’t the best roll, but considering how we were eating five rolls with the same taste, it gave some new flavors to the bunch.
The sushi is decent and cheap. Might go back again sometime to re-​evaluate!

Went tonight for dinner because of this place’s great rating. What a disappointment. The table and menus were gummy. I got hot tea, three types of tuna sushi and a green salad. The tea was tasteless. The fish was room-​temp; I like it better chilled. The sushi was served on a varnished wooden block; I’ve never seen this done. Restaurant food should be on a plate because plates can be run through a dishwasher and thoroughly cleaned.
My teenager had a California Roll and a Crazy Roll. He said they were okay; not as good as others in the area.
Once we finished eating, we waited and waited for the waitress to come back with the check. There was only one other party besides us and one guy at the sushi bar. Finally after 15 minutes went by, I grabbed the take-​out menu on the table, did the math, and left cash to cover our food and tip. Mikado, Yokohama and Megu are so much better.

Cheap and quality sushi are two things that don’t go together… until now. This place was recommended to me by a chef, and if it wasn’t, I never would have looked twice at this run down strip mall.
This is not the best sushi place in the world by a long shot, but it is exceptional and way better than average. The price point is incredible, you can get fed and fat for $ 23.50 a head. The basics are good, especially the shumai, edamame and $ 1.50 a miso soup. The rolls are really tasty and creative. Their are so many to choose from, we ordered the days specials and the were amazing. They are very well prepared, large, loaded with exquisite taste and a bit of heat. The sushi is good quality and a nice large slices that drape over the rice.
The service was solid, the people are happy, my kids were thrilled and this place is a winner.

TIP: There is a liquor stores a couple doors down, buy some decent Sake and have them ice it.

HANDS down the best Sushi in the area. I have friends that drive in from Philly just to eat here. I have been eating here for years and have never had anything short of a fantastic experience. As another reviewer pointed out, the Chef’s specialty rolls are really great. My favorites are the Bob Roll and the Twin Spicy Roll. The Chef truly has a way with actual sushi. Something about the way he cuts his fish combined with his perfect rice makes me wildly happy. The fish and seafood are always at the perfect temperature, which is crucial in my opinion. Sengyo is also really affordable, and the prices do not reflect the quality of food they turn out. Truly a south jersey gem, and a mom and pop place taboot. BYOB

My family could not get enough of Sengyo Sushi. We go here often and always have enjoyed their rolls (even the rice used for the rolls have a nice flavor to them). The seafood is always fresh, and the staff is very friendly.
If it’s your first time here, but are familiar with sushi, I would recommend you get the basic combo of either three California rolls or three tuna rolls. Both are satisfying and doesn’t cost a lot. Once you get comfortable, feel free to try out their other rolls (they have quite a selection), all are tasty.
The food from their kitchen is equally appealing. I’ve had their shrimp tempura, katsudon, and several of their udon – I’ve yet to dislike any of them.
If you’re here with a big group of people, get Sengyo Sushi’s Samurai Set or Special Set. There’s enough sushi and sashimi to satisfy everyone, plus they even serve it on a wooden boat for added visual appeal.
Since there’s only one sushi chef, there is some delay in getting your order especially during dinner time on Friday and Saturday, but it’s not too long of a wait – and you’ll certainly be happy that you waited because of how good your meal would turn out.

This is a family-​owned cozy restaurant with very friendly staff and fast service. The quality of the food is exceptional and the prices are unbeatable… I highly recommend the spicy dragon roll, the spider roll (with soft crab tempura… delicious!) and the spicy crunch roll, but I’m sure you can’t go wrong with anything you pick from the menu… and for dessert nothing better than a huge portion of tempura ice cream… sooo good! Keep up with the great job Sengyo… I’ll be back soon!

This is one of my favorite sushi joints in south jersey. The fish is always fresh and they are always willing to accommodate you if you have special requests. The owners are very friendly as well. I think their special roll selection is one of the largest in the area. Highly recommend this place. Spicy Crunch Roll FTW

Excellent! Tasty, fresh from shumai and tempura to all sorts of rolls. Can’t be beat!
