Indian Villa Curry-N-Cakes

I was here last week and except for the soup, I dint like any thing, rice was not fresh, curries was not fresh. They just heated up the existing food they have.

My opinion and honest food review. … OK we are in Jersey on one of our quarterly visits… I am an Indian food fanatic and let me add we are a well traveled family which means travelers throughout the US and 3^rd world countries! Now with that being said on to the food review… this place is definitely a 2 star in my book. we ordered online our order was to be ready for pick up in 35 mins once arrived had to wait an additional 25 minutes. I requested a spice level 5 – 6 on chicken tikka masala (I got an americanized spice 3). the chicken itself were big flavorless chunks not appealing at all! …So disappointed. .next the bhindi masala was LACKING spice and flavor as well. These people were not attentive to my (American husband) we noticed how courtesy they were to their own kind… next the raita was the worse ever it was thin and full of nuts! What the heck… my hubby has a nut allergy therefore he was unable to touch this stuff!.. lastly on the only positive to the entire meal was the garlic naan how sad is that! I Do NOT recommend this place for the American Indian food lover.. and if you like eye watering spicy and flavor you wont find it here. On our last visit to Jersey we dined at Coriander Indian much much better as for flavor and sevice! Overall we were very disappointed with Indian Villa curry –n– cakes. To the owners I suggest you remember where you came from … treat ALL people the same if it were not for the customers you would not have a Business! Your services suck… spice it up and don’t stereotype! Americans love SPICY TOO! Especially well traveled ones!

Think their food is really good but their service is terrible? Simple solution, go for the Buffet!
I knew going in that a lot of people gave them poor marks for customer service. So I went in for the buffet, because let’s be honest, you don’t need service at a buffet, you can go in, get your food, and go out without having to talk to anyone except the dude who you pay when you leave, since, well, buffet is self-​service anyway.
I would say if you are just here for the food then go for the buffet if you can. Like me. The food is very good even for buffet food. The sauce for the chicken tikka masala was one of the best i’ve had both in taste and appearance. Just the right thickness. Some places the chicken tikka masala sauce is like a soup, I don’t like that. It shouldn’t be too thick, but it shouldn’t be soupy either. This place strikes a perfect balance with it.
All the dishes I tried were quite tasty. The paneer with vegetable dish was quite good, their chili fish fry thing I had was also quite good. Only 1 type of rice, but that was fine as the rice tasted good. As was mentioned about the service though, the worker at the checkout area was on the phone the whole time but whatever, I gave him the money for the buffet and left full and satisfied with the food quality. As I said, it was a buffet so didn’t really care about anything service related since there really was no need to when it’s a buffet. The waiter took my dirty plate off the table shortly after I started on my 2^nd plate, so it’s not like he left it on the table for an unreasonable amount of time.
Water — A pitcher of water is brought to the table shortly after you sit down, so you don’t have to wait for them to fill it up or anything. I actually prefer that since it eliminates downtime on water refills.

Terrible. Lamb saag taste very strange. Tikka masala was average. Dosa was fair. They take credit card but the owner was pushing for cash. Very awkward. Staff is creepy.

Try this place if you wish to have some Chola Batura. They really make it very tasty & definitely worth trying.

5 stars now for its Consistency in the taste…4 visits so far excellent each time.

Horrible service, great food. Be prepared to wait 30 minutes for them to take your order or give you the check after you’re done eating. You have to constantly ask for items that you ordered. Might be better as a take out place than dine in.

This is the first Indian buffet that I’ve been to that doesn’t compromise flavor and spice! So good, and it’s not a hole in the wall either. Will definitely be going here again!

Food: The food was quite good. My group had vegetable samosas, naan, hyderabadi chicken dum biryani, chicken makhni, and chicken tikka masala.
The Samosas are standard, don’t waste your time with them because you can find better ones anywhere. They only sell vegetable samosas (it filling consists of peas and potatoes).
The naan is freshly made but it can be minutely burnt at the edges and base, making it slightly crispier. I personally did not mind it and thought it made the naan better and tolerable from the soft monotony. I really did not enjoy the naan size pieces, however. They were triangles which to me insinuates that the store is part of the Illuminati. The size also looked like I was eating slices of pizza at Chuck-​e-​Cheese.
The Biryani reminded me of home. I am personally from Hyderabad and it hits the ‘Dum’ aspect quite well; yeah, I am an expert. The rice, spices, and chicken were well made and produced a good blend of taste. Take my advice when I say you should squirt lemon on your rice. It takes the taste to a different level! Also, to restaurant people, you don’t put one small slice of an egg in one bowl of Biryani. That is how you start fights among siblings. Be generous with your egg.
Chicken Tikka Masala was alright. There was nothing special about it despite making it absolute spicy. It was my least favorite of all dishes but I still ate a lot of it with naan. lol.
Chicken Makhni was my favorite among all dishes. A good amount of butter, gravy, pieces of chicken, went perfectly well with naan. GET THIS!
Service: The waiters were chill. The absolute worst thing about the service was the wait, WHICH WAS FOR 40 MINUTES! We received the samosas as appetizer in the first five minutes, whose speed took me by surprise, but I absolutely hated waiting for the entrees. We received nothing in those 40 minutes! Me and my brother were very close to losing our patience and this close to cussing at the waiter. Once the food arrived all together like an assembly line of workers in a clothing factory, it was all chill.
Price: All entrees must be or are above $ 8 to $ 9. Expect yourself to spend close to $ 100 if you are a group of four to five people.
Environment: Family friendly location. Hindi pop music plays on the televisions. Entrance has baked goods, cakes and pastries, where the register is. Many tables available. There is a buffet line present at the end row of tables. Long, horizontal mirror is also available to check out how fat you have become after your meal.
Cleanliness: Tables, chairs, floors and utensils are clean for the most part. The area to restroom is shabby but you are not going to eat there so it shouldn’t be a problem.
I like everything about the restaurant except the wait. I suggest getting big appetizers so you’re not hungry and losing patience while the entrees are being cooked. It should work in my opinion.

I’ve said it once before on Unilocal and I’ll say it again. I judge Indian restaurants by their chicken tikka masala… If it’s good then I’ll come back and I may try other things. I really like their chicken tikka masala; the sauce is thick and creamy and you can get it spicy or mild. I like it spicy and boy did they make it spicy for me (not a bad thing). The service is lacking but I’m so excited to find good Indian food in South Jersey that I really don’t even mind.
I can’t wait to try their Wednesday night buffet…

Awesome restaurant, makes exactly indian taste. Wide variety of indian dishes. Chicken lollipops were the best. Schewan fried rice was the best, i can’t wait to go back there to have one more. Pastries were awesome. Will go back again.

Second time here and the consistency in food is awesome. I wouldn’t mind driving here all the way from Philly to eat Indian food.

Buffet review — Our experience with the buffet spread has been varied… We love the fact that the buffet includes made to order masala dosas… We also love the mango lassi… However the rest of the spread can be either good or bad… They have ample amount of choices though and it is a great value for money!
A-​la-​carte — We like the indo-​chinese from Indian Villa… The chilli chicken, chicken lollipop, manchurian and fried rice are all great… We also love the garlic nan from here… Its amazing! We’ve had better experience with the alacarte than the buffet!
This restaurant also happens to be next to our regular Indian grocers, so we end up picking food from here frequently!

Go here for an awesome buffet, but maybe think about avoiding their sit-​down service. Also avoid ordering online.
The long version:
See my previous review for more info about their buffet; it’s very good! Lots of variety and good quality. The service could be a bit more prompt, but luckily you don’t rely on it much when you’re eating buffet style.
You can order online, too, as we recently realized! We gave it a try a couple times and it worked out well… once. The other time, we unknowingly ordered during a mid-​day closed period. We placed our online order and drove out to pick it up. They were closed for a mid-​day break but the website did not reflect this! Our trip was wasted.
This mid-​day break isn’t listed anywhere in their current hours so I have no idea if it was a special situation or if they no longer close mid-​day, or if their hours are just listed inaccurately. Either way it’s probably best if you just call to make sure. Use the online menu and order over the phone.
Anyway, on to our latest visit. We ate here for a sunday dinner when they were not serving buffet. The service was awful from beginning to end. The waiter rushed us through ordering our food, and then brought our appetizers out one at a time several minutes apart instead of making any attempt to time it well. The final appetizer came 10 minutes later than the rest, and I was beginning to wonder if it was coming at all.
Then began the long wait for dinner. Nobody even once stopped to check on us or even throw us a casual glance. Nobody brought our Mango Lassis that we had ordered, nobody apologized for the wait or even acknowledged our presence, let alone refill our waters during this time (except when I requested it from a random passerby). We were ignored and treated begrudgingly while all other parties were attended to promptly and courteously.
I was watching and there was definitely a disconnect between our level of service and theirs. Was this because we were the only party with small (well behaved) children? Was this because we were the only non-​Indian party in the restaurant? Or was our waiter just incompetent and uncaring? Either way the end result didn’t make us happy.
After waiting a good 40 minutes for our entrees, I had had enough. I asked our waiter for the check and demanded that he cancel our entrees so we could just leave. He replied that dinner was «coming soon» and then, all of the sudden, once I finally complained it magically appeared a minute later. Coincidence, I’m sure. We boxed it up, went immediately to the register, and found that they still had left two Mango Lassis on our check despite having completely forgotten them. I got them voided off before paying.
What an inexcusable mess. This was the most disorganized, half-​assed service I’ve received in quite some time. Speaking as a former waiter, I would have been deeply ashamed to fail this profoundly to provide my guests with a pleasant experience. I will not be returning for dinner service, especially considering that they’re not much cheaper than Indeblue (who are AMAZING, by the way).

Rating both food and cakes.
Cake (4): easy process, was ready the next day. this place is basically the only option for eggless cakes, so it’s appreciated. fresh cream was good but not too sweet, as well as the fruit fillings.
Food (3.5): can be good, can be mediocre, depending on what/​how you order. At lunch buffet, meats are usually good while vegetables are not. They had dal, potatoes and cabbage, which are literally the cheapest things possible and didn’t taste great. Chicken makhani was good but had way to much food color. Veg Manchurian is good.
A la carte usually better
Service usually nonexistent. Employees are nowhere to be seen, just hanging around in the back room.

It took over an hour to get our food. We ordered the malai kofta and palak paneer. Food was tasty, but service was nonexistent. Two of our naans were burned to a crisp, and they ignored us when we told them. It is reasonably priced and will satisfy a craving for Indian food.

For buffet food, it’s good. I was the only American in there, so they are not catering to non Indian tastes. I have not eaten off the dinner menu and probably won’t since I won’t return.
One smart thing was that they left a pitcher of water on the table, so interaction with the stone cold «waiter» was minimal.

Absolutely delicious. I’m a veg and I got the veggie hakka noodles, dry chilli paneer and the bhel puri to start. The bhel was excellent — I haven’t had better since moving to this area. Perfect amount of chutney and they unexpectedly added mung beans which had a nice crunch.
The noodles were full of crunchy veggies and a good mix of Indian and Chinese flavors. A very large portion for $ 8 — def enough for two.
The chilli paneer (dry) still had a small amount of nice sauce to it and was perfectly stir fried with onions and bell peppers. The paneer was battered and deep fried.
I’d highly recommend this hidden gem. Withholding a star b/​c I asked for a soda a couple times but never received one. The waiter then tried to convince me to take it to go so he didn’t have to take it off the bill. I just insisted on a new bill and it was fine. Otherwise the service was quick and pleasant.

Not bad BYOB, the sweet corn soup was a little bland. The Saag Paneer was… different, it was a bit chunky and more oily than I am used to. The spice was right where it needed to be and it didn’t taste bad at all, but not my favorite. The naan was good, nice and soft with some crunch around the edges. The price couldn’t be beat, for two people (2 entrees, 2 soups, and 1 naan) came to $ 33 or something like that.
Service was friendly, water and rice was replenished quickly.
