Description

Specialties

We are a family owned and operation neighborhood supermarket serving the Hispanic and ethnic population of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We provide an alternative to the large chain supermarkets with their lack of knowledge of the diversity of the Latino cultures and tastes and the small «bodega» with their high prices and limited product variety. We operate stores in Chelsea and Lynn, MA and Providence, RI.

History

Established in 1996.

Stop and Compare Supermarkets is a family owned and operated neighborhood supermarket chain formed in 1996 that serves the growing Latino and ethnic population in the Boston metropolitan area and in other New England communities. The founders, immigrants themselves, have made their mission to provide «Diverse Food for Diverse Communities.» Since the company’s humble beginning in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Stop and Compare has expanded into new communities and ventured into new states. The company is now a multi-million dollar business and has more than 120 full-time and part-time employees.

Meet the Business Owner

Alberto C.

Business Owner

Alberto Calvo’s professional career has spanned over 35 years in engineering and management positions in the defense industry. Upon his retirement, Mr. Calvo joined the family business and currently serves as President of Stop and Compare Supermarkets. The strategic «niche» of the Company is to locate in inner cities in between the «bodegas» with their high prices and limited product variety and the large supermarkets who can not differentiate amongst Latino tastes. We operate stores in the Greater Boston and Providence metro areas, offering a wide variety of latino products; fresh fruits and produce; dairy products and meats cut to the latino taste. Mr. Calvo is responsible for strategic planning, process improvement, and business acquisitions to spur growth. Mr. Calvo holds engineering degrees from Northeastern U. and M.I.T. and an MBA from B.U. He serves in the Boards of SCI, La Vida, Inc. and BIDMC. He is a native of Cuba and lives in Newton with his wife Betty.
