We had the privilege of taking 4US Navy Pilots to lunch here and none of us were disappointed.

Steak in a Sac add Provolone with onion rings on the side was excellent! The bottom bites of the pita were amazing! The Chicken Shawarma chicken was seasoned perfectly.

My son has autism and he wants to try his first job at a sandwich shop(I’ll hold back the name lol) and I’m a little skeptical. Good for you for standing behind family. My memory is horrible but I will be visiting friends I’m TN someday soon and I’ll be sure to come in to eat… I’d be honored!!!

I wish I could drive from CA to TN for one of these Hoagies too! They go by reputation alone! Ankar’s you are known of and loved all the way over here in the OC, and when I get the chance to visit your area I will absolutely be stopping in! And I’m not even American(from the UK and Japan and I’ve told a bunch of friends there too) so let’s just call you what you are now — World Famous!

Though I wish I can easily drive to TN from CA for some hoagies. I did want to say how awesome to read Alex post though, so i thought i would give it 5 stars to spread the love! Im sure their dad is proud to see both of his sons continue the legacy and as you can see they are awesome brothers! Anyone who has the nerve to complain to the health inspector doesn’t deserve to eat at your place anyway. Just wanted to say Alex and Andrew are awesome and I wish them both the best!

One of the few honest shops I’ve seen outside of Philly. No trillion dollars of atmosphere — just very good food that will fill you up. Steak in a sac is a winner, so is the Cuban(get it as a rider even though it’s not shown on the menu), onion rings, and everything else I’ve had there. Get the baklava to close out your trip. If you’re not that adventurous, the classic brownies are AMAZING!

Choose this place due to the consistent reviews when we were visiting Chattanooga. We were not disappointed. The kids got a hot dog meal which was delicious due to the high quality hot dog they use. The gyro and chicken shwarma were both excellent on the freshest pita I have ever eaten. Thanks for the good food!

One of the only places in Chattanooga that I would rate 5 stars. Don’t go here if you’re looking for atmosphere. Food wise, you can’t go wrong. I highly recommend the«Steak in a Sack» or a simply Gyro. Ordering crinkle cut fries as an alternative to the onion rings is an insult. Simply the best onion rings I’ve ever eaten and the pita bread is fresh. You’ll be impressed.

I have waited far too long to try this place out. Have heard great things, read great reviews but it’s usually not on my radar. I pass by it on the way to work sometimes but it’s not open at 5:00 a.m. LOL. Finally popped in and order a sandwich and onion rings to go. This is not a fancy place. Kinda like a 70’s style diner/fast food counter place. There’s a big table right when you walk in the door with several chairs, one being like an office chair. I think it’s the family’s table that run the place. Well I sat there and waited for my order and just watched the action. Very busy place. It’s family run and they really hustle. The food was very good. I ordered the Cuban sandwich and it was tasty. The onion rings are good, house made. not frozen ones. Will for sure go back and try more stuff.

I must say this place doesn’t look appealing from the outside at first glance. What led me here were my fellow Unilocalers. As a vegetarian I ordered the Falafel and boy was I thrown back. The flavor of the falafel is there along with the pita and sauce it comes with. The place itself isn’t the nicest, seems to have been a bar/diner half gone but half still there. The staff is friendly just like you would find at a mom and pop diner. Don’t expect this to be a fancy sit down place. They have a huge sitting area towards the back that kind of doesn’t fit the front part of the place(maybe and old billiard room) but please come right in. Overall for the price and location, Ankar’s offers a quick and ready to eat lunch option.

I had the Cuban today and it was pretty good. The onion rings were very good. My wife really liked her falafel sandwich but płans to try the black bean burger next time. The kids were happy with their chicken. Will come back again soon.

Visited this establishment on our way to Knoxville. The restaurant is easy to find with lots of menu options. We tried the steak in a sac and gyro. The meat is well done, grilled onions a nice touch. Sandwich wasn’t greasy at all! Gyro came with tomatoes onions and gyro sauce. Meat was well seasoned! We also tried a baklava and it was really good! Very flaky, sweetened with honey. 4 stars because it’s good but not the best best I’ve ever had! Great for a quick meal!

So, during our trip to Chattanooga, we were craving subs/sandwiches. After doing a search here on Unilocal,we ended up choosing Ankar’s Hoagies over Jimmy John’s. During our lunch, we realized that was a mistake. I ordered the«Steak In a Sac» which was recommended to us by the cashier who said it was the most popular item. It consisted of steak, onions, and cheese that I had added on for $ 0.55 all inside pita bread. My girlfriend had the«Steak on a Sub» which is pretty much the same as what I ordered, except on a «sub». To be honest, the bread used for the«sub» very much resembled a hot dog bun. Anyways, both were VERYDRY and the flavor was definitely missing. We were very disappointed. I do have to say that the onion rings were actually very good, which a lot the other reviews mention. Also, at the counter they had baklava for sale.(Assorted, 6 pieces in a plastic container sold for $ 4.99 each) The baklava was also very good!
