Been going here for years… no complaints really, but was just kinda creeped out. After working at a couple liquor stores myself, the standard rule was to check ID of anyone who looks under 27. And not to bother people who look over 30, because I guess it can be considered harassment. Plus I heard weird stories from other places of people asking for ID of women who are obviously over 30 just so they can see their name and address. Anyway… I stopped in today to buy some powerball tickets and beer. I’m 34. I don’t look under 30, and by no means do I look under 21! And I’ve been going here for years, as I said. I thought the guy was joking when he asked for my ID. Then really felt uncomfortable when he looked at it for awhile. Was he memorizing my info? Maybe some perv into guys? Lol, I have no idea, was just very weird. Haven’t had to show my ID in like 10 years. Just weirded me out…

It’s a typical New Jersey Deli. Nothing special, nothing too bad. Overpriced booze, lottery tickets and stale donuts. But when you need something quick, it’s right there. The staff is nice and the joint is clean enough. The food… meh. It’s not bad, I’ll say that. I suppose some of the things they make are pretty good, but I’ve only had a handful of deli items made for me.

When I was working in the city, this was the only store I shopped at. Pick up my paper and a coffee in the morning on the way to the train. Pick up a can of beer or a bottle of wine on the walk home from the train. It’s one stop shopping. One the weekend I’d get a turkey sub and a Coors Light Tall-Boy.

What’s not to love about the Cottage Deli?! The sandwiches are great, the lunch special are inexpensive(for Chatham), and best of all it is a rare deli with liquor store in it. A total treat for a New Jersey consumer. Not that I drink during lunch, but it’s nice to pick up something for dinner or for the weekend without making an extra stop. The décor and ambiance could be better but they make up for it with a friendly, helpful staff. Although they have a few tables, its best to take things to go.
