From a comprehensive vision and ocular health exam to more specialized procedures and recommendations, we will be able take care of your eye health needs and concerns. After your exam, we have an excellent and experienced staff of contact lens technicians and eyeglasses opticians who will be able to help you choose the perfect pair of glasses or sunglasses. We know that each patient has different needs during their visits to our practice, and it is our responsibility to know and understand these in order to provide the very best eye care for you.

History

Established in 1987.

The practice that is now Primary Eyecare began with optometrist Dr. Mike DiGirolamo in California in the 1970s, and was relocated to Charlottesville in 1987 as ²⁰⁄₂₀ Optometry. Dr. D moved to the current Barracks Road location in 1995, providing patients with an expanded facility and easier access.

Drs. Joe and Janice DiGirolamo joined the Primary Eyecare staff in 1996, working with Dr. D until his retirement in the late 1990’s. Since this time, the practice and scope of patient services has continued to grow. We have multiple doctors on staff to assist you in all of your eye care needs.

Today, Primary Eyecare has two state-​of-​the-​art facilities in Charlottesville, VA. We are staffed with highly experienced professionals and provide patients with the very best in eye care and eyewear in a comfortable and friendly environment.

Dr. Joe DiGirolamo grew up in Southern California, and after moving to Charlottesville he graduated from Western Albemarle High School. (Several of his teachers are now patients!) He then received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Villanova University located in Philadelphia. Remaining in Philadelphia, Dr. D. attended and graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University. Upon graduating, Dr. DiGirolamo energetically joined his father in practice at Primary Eyecare. Several years later his father retired, and he and his wife became responsible for the practice. Since then the practice has expanded to include several more doctors and locations to serve the central Virginia community.

Dr. DiGirolamo also authored the book «The Big Family Book of Eyecare,”-A contemporary family reference for vision and eye health. Be sure to look for it on local bookstore shelves, as well as at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
