Mint Museum Uptown

All the contemporary art forms you can handle in one museum. I pride myself on being able to write a decently witty review for just about anything but for some reason the Mint Museum was so extraordinary mind boggling I can’t quite find the words to describe my experience.
Therefore I’ll keep it short & sweet… there’s so much to capture inside of this amazing structure. There is a small fee for adults and a discounted price for children (who will really enjoy a tour by the way). Actually, I highly recommend taking the kiddos, as they will be pretty amused with the art forms on display. Afterward take them downstairs to the Mint Shop to purchase cool souvenirs like puzzles, jewelry and lunch boxes. Definitely worth a trip if you’re in the Charlotte area.

We came for a rehearsal dinner in one of the smaller rooms upstairs. I loved the Chihuly glass chandelier near the room we used. I didn’t get to see many of the exhibits, but the art in the common areas is pretty cool. Seems like a great spot to go for an afternoon or maybe fun day date.

Enjoy going into this museum, actually both locations. I just wish there were more pieces from bigger names as this is what most people recognize. Do appreciate the variety of exhibits they have and the Mint’s presence in the art community in Charlotte!

I’ve been here a couple times and love it! The building is a world-​class architectural gem! The space is a work of art itself. It’s not The Met or The Art Institute of Chicago, but it a still a cultural gem (on a smaller scale).
The have some amazing temporary exhibits. I went for the Viva Moschino! fashion exhibit and it was amazing. Moschino was was so ahead of his time. The clothes are works of art! The exhibit was incredibly well done! I went to the Halton/​Warhol exhibit last year which was equally inspiring.
The permanent exhibits are on two floors. The 4^th floor houses the American and Contemporary Art. The contemporary art collection is a bit fragmented and thin. The showpiece is the massive Kehinde Wiley portrait. It is a «must-​see!» The Romare Bearden collection is a must.
The museums real niche is Crafts + Design on 3. The galleries are arranged by material (glass, metal, wood, jewelry, etc). The collection is stunning and impressive. Go!
Nice gift shop on the street level and members get a discount at Halcyon restaurant on mezzanine level (one of Charlotte’s best).

A modern art museum, nothing more, nothing less. It’s worth a visit when you run out of things to do in town. The architect of the building itself is nice

In no way is this the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, but it’s a great alternative if you’re looking for a little culture in Charlotte! I was here for about two hours, and that was enough to get through most of the main exhibits. There is a pretty diverse collection of pieces, ranging from classic american art to modern installations. There were a few pieces that were definite highlights… mostly the modern and glass pieces.
The temporary exhibits are an extra charge, so if you’re planning to see the entire museum, go early to make it worth your time.
While I was there a few weeks ago, they were setting up for a sit-​down holiday party that night. As I was walking out close to closing time, there were a few bar stations set up around the museum, so I’m guessing this was one of those events where you can tour the museum at night with drinks for an event. I can’t image how expensive it would be, but it’s a great idea if you’re looking to do something different for an event!

A superb art museum in downtown Charlotte!
This museum has a great collection of art. It doesn’t seem to have any aim with what they’re going for, no mission about their art. They have a painting by a Italian master, next to a Norman Rockwell, next to a costume from a play. It can be a bit confusing to jump from piece to piece like that.
The staff was wonderfully accommodating. Some of them even went as far as explaining the significance of some of the works of art, and answering our questions.
But their craft and design section was incredibly well done. I really enjoyed the glass work and the crafts. It was very well laid out and organized.
The museum design was cool! 4 levels of art, and an area for special exhibits. They have a giant atrium where you can ride the escalators up and down and watch what goes on below in the massive open space of the museum.
The exhibits also showcase cool videos about the artist, which seem artful in themselves. I really enjoyed watching the videos that accompanied the works of art in the craft area.
The gift shop was fun and well lit. The prices were on the high end, but that’s to be expected when you don’t have a membership.

Loved it! This place is so interesting and I can not wait to go back. It’s mind boggling that I have lived uptown for over two years, and just now getting around to visiting. Good thing I have a membership now!
First of all, the location is great. I have always been into art and it is nice that Charlotte has such an amazing scene for it. When I think of «art», I think of peace and tranquility. Which was everything that I experienced during my visit.
At the front desk, I was greeted by two kind ladies. They walked me through the different types of admissions, which were general, student, youth, and senior. These were offered as a one time admission or one year membership. Now, I came in for the single day pass, but the membership was unbeatable. It offered admission to both Mint Museums located in Charlotte, and several others across the states. Also, 10% off on the restaurant that I hear is amazing! I got much more for my monies worth with the membership.
The exhibits were very enjoyable and I felt like I connected with Viva Moschino! fashion line the most. It is crazy to me that something such as garbage, can be made into fashionable clothing! This museum offered other great exhibits throughout its four floors. I could spend hours here on any given day.
With my membership I plan on visiting the other Mint museum on Randolf Road. Also, I travel to Asheville a lot and I am sure I could find admission into one there. Hell, I might as well try and get into every museum that is included. Why? BECAUSE I CAN!

Great location. Great collection of art. I love to spend time just walking around taking in the vibe.
On a rainy day, this is the best — you can walk around for hours and sit and stare at a single piece of art and just let it sink in… love it!

World class Museum. Facilities are well maintained clean, quite and very enjoyable. Art displays were well put together, thoughtfully presented with artists info. Would certainly go back and would recommend this to anyone visiting Charlotte.

Husband and I were in the area and wanted to check out this museum. We enjoyed the artwork along with sculptures from various mediums. The layout of the museum is fluid, there are 4 floors and it is recommended you work your way down. At each floor can opt to view pieces clockwise or counterclockwise, corridors are wide enough for traffic flow but narrow enough to take in the artwork.

Really awesome museum with a great collection of different local and even bigger artists. They have free entry for their permanent collections on Wednesday evenings from 5 – 9. The museum itself is beautifully constructed and is art all on its own. Even the benches are really cool.

I really enjoyed this museum! I loved all the different art it housed, the international exposure, the lay out and even the special exhibition galleries were worth the extra dollars.
The front staff was friendly and helpful when getting my admission tickets. I went on a weekday and there were not many people there which was nice. I was fascinated with the body embellishment exhibit and the Halston and Warhol exhibit was entertaining and educational at the same time. Both were interesting and inspiring to see. I also really enjoyed both the craft & design and the contemporary art galleries. So much creativity found in these rooms!
I highly recommend this museum if you are in town!

Went specifically for the Warhol & Halston display, they did a great job presenting using a variety of media. After living in Washington DC for over 30 years, I’d say we are pretty spoiled with an endless supply of Museums there. The Mint is small by comparison, but I do look forward to going back — maybe for once I will be able to take it all in instead of running though trying to make sure I didn’t miss anything. On the down side, the lighting is a bit low, almost depressing. I also couldn’t help but notice the security guards literally following me around, I would think in this day and age electronic surveillance would suffice. On the bright side, it’s free for Military /​Veterans — can’t beat that.

Love the glass and ceramics the best. The museum also has some neat sculptures in wood, stone, and other materials. Some neat abstract and still life paintings. There were a few decorative pieces that don’t really fit into a specific category, but I loved them anyways.
The kid area downstairs is also a neat feature piece where kids (of all ages. lol adults too wink) can touch, play and create!
I took quite a few photos and should be uploading them this week.
Tip: Wednesdays are absolutely FREE from 5 – 9 PM and street parking is FREE after 6 PM, otherwise most garages charge $ 5 after 5 PM.
Future: Next week they will have the Warhol exhibit, looking forward to checking that out at some point!

At $ 12 for non-​members, not too bad to be able to spend 2 hours walking and examining some excellent artworks. We opted not to upgrade to the temporary exhibits and stuck with the permanent ones, which was still really great!
Great layout in a wide circle and other than a couple of side rooms, very easy to navigate and still be able to see everything. The exhibits are well spaced and not crowded at all, so there’s no feeling of being overwhelmed by the art.
Sculptures, furniture, portraits, jewelry, glassworks, paintings and very large exhibits, all intermixed and organized by type. Lovely!
Tip: A little confusing that the exhibits are only on the 3^rd and 4^th floors. Weird.
Oh, and it’s called the Mint Museum not because of chewing gum but the building was originally the Charlotte Mint. As in printing money.

As a member of Mint Museum, I can be a little bias. Charlotte’s museum scene is a little limited. In comparison to other cities, our little Mint Museum (Uptown or Randolph) may not seem to be much, thus I feel more obligated to support them.
Mint Uptown typically has several special exhibits throughout the year. This spring they will have a Warhol & Halston exhibit that I’m very much looking forward to. And they offer Sunday Funday (once a month) which is a free kids event (and free for adult member — non-​member has a $ 6 fee). Their website lists out all the events they have, including special events (gala, tasting menu night, guest speakers, performances etc). Alot of them are free offerings.
Don’t forget Wednesday nights they open late (until 9pm) and offer free general admission. AND if you ever decide to join as their member, you get 10% discount at Halcyon (named one of the top museum by Travel & Leisure) and at the gift shop.
Come on out and support your local art museum!

Although the exhibition requires to purchase extra tickets we did not went through, but the rest display is such a mind nutrition and eye feast! I like the Danny Lane’s masterpiece. It’s a wonderful combination of geometry and art! And also the other glass work is amazing!

First time here… and I’ve lived here now for 3+ years. What took so long? Beautiful modern museum. Went here for the Pecha Kucha performance. Somewhat odd but I enjoyed it overall. Started funky as the first artist’s presentation was SO damned depressing that I wanted to slit my wrists! That chick is DEFINITELY off my «want to date» list!
Friendly and professional staff. I’m impressed that they only charged $ 6 for a full glass of Dark Horse Cab from Cali. Not bad!
Look forward to more events here.

This place is THE spot for contemporary arts in Charlotte! It’s pure sophistication :-)
…of the museums I have visited in this city, this is my fave. Sometimes I leave a museum trying to recall exactly what it was that I had paid to see. When I left here I was reminiscing about the cool stuff that I saw. If you are an artist, the Mint is inspirational and if your are an art-​admirer, like myself, the Mint is mesmerizing:-)
Definitely a worth/​must-​see, enjoy!
