Meet the Manager

S. Eugene H.

Manager

Upon arrival to Open House in 1981, Gene Hall began an immediate and drastic reorganization of an organization that was floundering. Gene insisted that staff embrace addiction as a serious disease that required serious effort by those seeking to help others. Attitudes, understandings, and staff appearance all changed as did most of the staff over the first two years of Gene’s leadership. Perhaps the most important and enduring ideal that Gene insisted upon was the belief that all people, clients, staff, and associates should be treated with dignity, respect and honor. That belief system has become the basis of all services, activities, and relationships at McLeod Center. Instilled at a time when substance abuse treatment was largely based on the theory that addicts should be «broken down» to later be «built back up», the idea was considered controversial. On March of 2011, Gene celebrated 30 years of leading McLeod Center. The staff will not let him retire.
