History
Established in 1991.
Charlotte Swim Academy, the first privately owned Swim School in Charlotte was founded when Martha Sue Crowley built the business from the ground up. She has always been an entrepreneur from when she was young and continued this practice as she went door to door teaching lessons in back yard pools. Her success grew based on her focus on quality, putting the needs of the swimmer first and never giving up on anyone who wanted to learn.
The belief in putting family first and treating every person like family is how we have always been successful. Today the business continues to grow and employees over 30 swim instructors. We take pride in changing the lives of over 50,000 swimmers and making Charlotte a Safer Place to Swim!
Our specialty is our private lesson, allowing us to focus on the individual needs of each swimmer. This also allows us to progressively develop each swimmer’s skill at a rate determined by each individual swimmer based on their comfort level, skill and ability

Martha Sue C.
Business Owner
Martha Sue, a native to Charlotte, NC — founded Charlotte Swim Academy when she was only 19 years old. She learned as a young child how to swim and was taught by Ron Morrow — a well-known local instructor of his time.
Loving to teach children and with her strong affection for the water, she thought it best to combine the best of both worlds and Charlotte Swim Academy was born!
She went pool to pool and taught in back yards and at different aquatic centers until she was able to open her own establishment at Greylyn Park on Monroe Rd.
Martha Sue has actively been a member of the US Swim School Association since 1990. She served several years on the Board of Directors, became Vice-President and then served as the President of the Association.
She is well known in the community for her community involvement and goodwill to our city.
Martha Sue lives in Charlotte with her husband Gary and their three children — Walter, Lillian and Carolyn.
