History

Established in 1999.

The History of the Church…

Located in the former Dilworth Methodist Episcopal Church South, Bonterra’s home is quite rich in history. In 1895, the Atherton Methodist Church was built, becoming the first permanent church in the Dilworth suburb. The Reverend John Butt, who also operated a local grocery store, was the church’s first pastor.

In 1914, the members replaced the original wooden facility with a birch building and the church was then known as Dilworth Methodist Episcopal Church South. The building was later occupied by the First Church of Nazareth (1926 – 1973) and later by the Greater Providence Baptist Church (1973 – 1987).

Now the church is home to Charlotte’s most distinctive restaurant — Welcome!

Meet the Business Owner

John D.

Business Owner

Bonterra is located in a renovated 100 year old church in the historic Southend District of Charlotte. Sommelier & Owner John Duncan has created a stunning array of 200 wines by-the-glass and an additional 300 selections from the cellar which comprises one of the largest wine lists in Charlotte. Complimenting John’s selection of wines are the menu offerings of Executive Chef Blake Hartwick.
