Business Owner

Meet Sarah Stahlhuth Dubay, owner of Wine & Design in West Ashley. She lives in Avondale with her husband, Bryan and their three dogs. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and has loved Charleston from an early age after vacationing every summer on Kiawah. She graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Early Childhood Education and completed her Master’s in Education from the University of Missouri.

Two things that have always been prominent in Sarah’s life are teaching and art. She enjoyed art classes throughout school, specifically painting and pottery. For the past seven years she has taught two year olds and she’s always tried to incorporate her love for the arts into the classroom. After moving back to Charleston she celebrated a birthday party at a wine and painting party and the rest is history. She is thrilled that she has found something that perfectly combines two of her favorite things, in the perfect atmosphere for learning and creativity.

This place is amazing. My mom, my daughter, and I went tonight for the first time ever. They were so patient with my 5 year old and so willing to help her and show her how to mix colors and blend. We did the open paint class, so we got to pick our own paintings and do things at our own pace. David, was so easy going and willing to help in any way. Thanks to everyone at Wine & Design for the perfect fun evening with my mom and daughter. We will definitely be back soon.

My daughter and I were visiting Charleston, SC and I booked a reservation at Wine & Design. We had the best time ever. The staff are very helpful and patient. Neither my daughter or myself are artsy, but the professional artist that assisted us made our paintings look just like the ones on display. I totally recommend doing a fun night out with the girls and make sure you bring your own wine.

This was my first time visiting a guided painting class like this. My boyfriend and I went to one of their «Men Paint Free» nights, and we had an absolute blast! Neither of us had painted before, but our instructor was very helpful and encouraging. She broke the painting down into manageable, non-​intimidating steps. She walked through the room looking at our paintings and offering advice and encouragement. I was honestly pretty skeptical that I would be leaving with anything «wall-​worthy,» but our paintings turned out great! I can not recommend this experience enough. If you’re itching to tap into your artistic side, this is the place to go!

I had been looking for a Rainbow Road and loved the one that was posted as a class here. I drove almost 2 hrs just to do the posted Rainbow Row which was just beautiful. My husband dropped me off and then I found out it was a different design which was the design I had seen at all the other paint classes. I was really disappointed especially since I had driven so far. The assistant had not shown up for work, so the instructor was all by herself with the class and the people in the open studio. We were 45 minutes late starting, which was NOT her fault and she did her absolute best under the circumstances.

Great experience! The staff was helpful, polite and fun. The vibe of the place was great also! I loved the artwork on the walls to choose from. Very great way to spend a girls night or learn some new painting techniques.

Wine and Design is one of the sip-​and-​paint studios that’s growing in popularity. I’ve done several sip-​and-​paint classes at various studios, and this is one of the best.
Wine and Design is an actual building, they may do mobile, but most of their classes are in the brick-​and-​mortar studio on Hwy 61. They offer instructional classes with a group of people doing a painting but they also offer an option to pick your own and the instructor will go around and help you individually. I really like this because sometimes you might want to do a sip-​and-​paint class but aren’t sure which picture you want to paint or different people in your group of friends want to paint a different thing. The choose-​your-​own option works for everyone.
The instructors for Wine and Design are great. The last class I went to, Ava was the instructor and she was excellent. She guided me through every step of the painting– from mixing colors to signing the final product. I left with a finished painting that I’m proud to hang in my home. I’ve been to some sip-​and-​paints where the instructors hardly interact with the painters at all and just play music, but Wine and Design is not one of those. If you listen to the instructors, ask for help, etc, you can leave with a nice painting even if you’re not an artist.
You can bring appetizers or drinks with you, and the studio has corkscrews, wine classes, etc. Not everyone brings food and drinks, it’s just whatever you want to do, but it’s nice to have that option to bring in whatever food you want.

My family decided to do a «staycation» rather then venturing off to find fun else where. We filled our days with tourist activities. We had heard about wine and design through a friend and decided to check it out. My mother and I do not get to spend a lot of time together. So we thought it was the perfect place to get some quality time in! It was an awesome experience! We are not avid painters but there was no need, the instructor walked everyone through each step. It was a wonderful night and we created works of art! I would recommend this place to anyone!

Sarah is wonderful! We had a small group of girls in town for the weekend and thought a painting class would be a fun addition. We were right! Sarah was easy to work with, nice, and helpful at all stages in the process. She coaxed those of us who didn’t have much artistic talent into exploring our inner Monets, and she worked with people who wanted to try their hand at more advanced techniques. The studio was adorable, the opportunity to add wine and snacks was key to get our creative juices flowing, and the music was awesome. Added plus: It’s right in Avondale (can anyone say «yummy restaurants») and has ample parking.
As someone who goes to a lot of wine/​painting classes, I can be picky about the experience, but I am without a doubt a big fan of Wine & Design West Ashley!
