History

Established in 2012.

Coastal Climbing was founded in 2011 when a life-long passion for climbing was met by a growing community of eager climbers. Kensie Whitfield, a Charleston local and 14 year long climber, has been building small home gyms since the age of 12 and sharing his love for climbing with anyone who’s willing to listen. In 2010 kensie built his largest home gym yet, dubbed «The Ballroom» in downtown Charleston with the help of a few friends and dedicated climbers. It was not long before the word got out and the popularity of bouldering at the ballroom outgrew the facility. It was at this point that a vision of a bouldering gym large enough to support a growing community of climbers was born. Anyone from novices to seasoned climbers can come challenge themselves both physically and mentally while also having fun and engaging in an active and welcoming community.

Business Owner

Kensie Whitfield: Charleston Native and fourteen year long avid climber. I began climbing in 1998 and competed at Regional and National level competitions for many years. As an outdoor enthusiast I have traveled across the country rock climbing and mountaineering. After graduating from Appalachian State University with a major in Geography I decided to pursue my dream to open a gym where I could spread my passion for climbing to those who may not otherwise get to experience it. I hope the gym will be a success so that future generations of climbers can experience the wonders that climbing has to offer.

Jeanna Crockett: Originally from Bethesda, Maryland I began climbing just 5 years ago when I met Kensie while attending College of Charleston. I love climbing because it’s an alternative to the mundane task of working out at the gym and it challenges you to push both your physical and mental limits. Every day is different and everyday you get to see little improvements in yourself.
