History

Established in 2011.

In October, 2010, after returning from Italy, we went on a quest to find the best limoncello in America. Failing to replicate the taste and experience of that wonderful Italian trip, we became enamored with making our own limoncello.

In pursuing our vision of opening a mini-​distillery in America we found a unique 12-​acre parcel in Charles Town, WV, with an 1840s, abandoned log cabin steeped in history, but in need of a loving restoration. We took on the challenge and created a charming mini-​distillery where we make artisan fruit cordials by hand from our farm’s own lemons and raspberries. Yes, lemons in WV – which makes a limoncello that rivals any award-​winning italian limoncello. Hands-​down!

Loving the creativity and freedom of running a mini-​distillery, we’ve added to our original creation. We’ve crafted a variety of «SweetShine,» from our Cremma Lemma and Hard Lemonade, to our proprietary Raspberry Lemon.

Business Owner

In between the deaths of two sons, Linda Losey, a courageous mother of four, embarked upon an incredible journey across America, alone, on horseback to heal and honor a promise made.

Linda is an award-​winning speaker, as well as the Amazon #1 best-​selling author of The Great God Hunt. As the result of her historic journey in 2005, Linda became the first woman to ride across America, alone, on horseback, using much of the American Discovery Trail. She was inducted into the elite, international Long Rider’s Guild and is a former member of the Maryland Defense Force, Troop A, Cavalry. She is past president of Valley Toastmasters International and a former executive director of a children’s foundation. She is now a co-​owner of Bloomery Plantation Distillery in Charles Town, WV. Linda may be an award-​winning artist, speaker, writer and entrepreneur, but she’s also a teacher at heart – holding an M.S. in Education, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

We visited with friends and enjoyed every aspect. Our funtenders Rob & Rita were outstanding! They made both of our tastings extra rewarding. All of the spirits are great. My wife and I bought a bottle of each version of Sweet Shine! If you are in Charles Town this is a must visit!

Wow, I never liked moonshine until NOW! I visited their distillery this past Saturday at 2:30pm, and even though it was cold and windy, it was still busy! It’s a casual place with a gravel parking lot in the woods, so a sweatshirt and tennis shoes is fine.
Tastings run every 30 minutes, so we had 25 minutes to kill beforehand. We walked in the warm greenhouse (felt amazing!), bought a drink, and played a game of cornhole outside.
The tasting lasted about 30 minutes, and they gave us everything on the menu plus a few bonuses to try (one leftover flavor from summer). The staff was entertaining and informative, perfect for couples, friends, and family groups. We saw one couple with a kid, but don’t take a kid to this distillery — they were the only ones and it’s not appropriate in a tasting room with only alcohol.
Since you cannot open their bottles on-​site after buying them, the tastings are free, and you can buy $ 5 mixed moonshine drinks otherwise. It’s a great setup!
The only downside is no indoor seating besides the tasting room that you can only sit in during your tasting as they have groups ready by the half hour to start their turn. Therefore, you will need to walk in the greenhouse if cold and bundle up to enjoy the outdoor visit!
If you love pumpkin spice, go soon as it’s seasonal, and you will want to buy a few bottles of it! All of the flavors are amazing, I did not dislike any of them!

I’m not going to write too long of a review, because I think everyone else has captured the reasons behind my love for this distillery (well, I will try; there are just too many great things to say!).
Pros:
1. Easy to get to, and there is a ton of free parking
2. Tastings are every 30 minutes until 7pm (later hours than wineries), so no matter what time you come, you won’t have to wait too long to get started
3. Mailing list gets you cool recipes using their product
4. Because this is a federally-​monitored operation, many of the ingredients have to be grown on site = you get to see various fruits growing!
5. The tasting is free, and the «funtenders» know their stuff as are super friendly
6. The tasting includes a tasting sheet for you to take notes/​score the drinks, and there are cocktails mixed into the tasting rounds
7. Adult-​sized cocktails are cheap; you can get a custom-​made drink based on your favorites if you don’t pick an option off of the menu (for the same price)
8. Pretty much every flavor is amazing, and there are seasonal options
9. Bloomery has won international awards and is well-​regarded all over the world; plus, there are interesting stories to learn about the location and the owners
10. There is plenty of outdoor seating to mix and mingle; there is also corn hole and a BBQ truck as well as live music on certain days
Cons:
1. Bloomery isn’t open on Sundays for tastings
Bottom line: you don’t need to think about it, just go go go!

Love. Pure alcoholic love. I wish I could share my happiness completely on here. Freshly made Sweetshine that basically causes such joy! Definitely take the taste tour… you get to sample ALL of their shine… everything they make. Do it. You can thank me later. You can feel, and taste, the love these folks have for their products.

We love coming here, we’ve already been here twice in two weeks!
The first time we came with our daughter who we knew wouldn’t have a great time sitting through a tasting but the owner got her settled with some ice cream and she was set! It was also pouring so we didn’t really get to walk around. The second time it was a beautiful day and we were able to walk the grounds and see the back of the building which is a reclaimed wood, steampunk, lovers dream! It’s awesome back there. Do yourself a favor and walk around back after the tasting and stick around and relax with one if the mixed drinks they put together for you, you won’t be disappointed. and you’ll be be back. The staff there is also super awesome and just fun to hang out with. :)

Purchased a bottle of the moonshine milkshake to make a ‘dreamsicle’ concoction for my wife to try. I ended up drinking all of it before she could taste it… I promise I don’t have a drinking problem.
The employees are knowledgeable, helpful, and funny. The product is second to none.

A friend and I were supposed to go for a hike but mother nature had other plans. When trying to find something to do indoors she asked if I minded going for a drive. Drive to where you ask? Bloomery Plantation and Distillery. I live about 45 minutes away in Virginia but let me tell you, I will be making this trip many times in the future. We got a tour of the green house where they grow all their own ingredients for their Sweet Shine. Then we attended a FREE tasting which included 10 different types of cello and 3 types of cocktails. Not only were they all delicious, everyone was given a free recipe card for each type of liquor for future reference. I left with 4 bottles but wish I bought them all. Guess I have to go back to complete my collection and bring all my friends *shrug*

So this where people who dress up for the Renaissance Fairs find gainful employment.
The staff here is costumed and loads of fun, this the name «funtenders». They go through each sample in the free tasting menu, provide food pairings, and joke around. It is pretty awesome that you make your way through over six liquors and two cocktails, get a cool drink recipe book and are entertained throughout the tasting all for free.
I am going to admit I am the only four star review for this place, because some of the alcohol was not my style, which is a bit shocking since I like moonshine, but this was a little too sweet. If you’re a person who loves ice wine, frangelico, kahlua, and insulin shock this is your place.
A large group of girls in here who were apparently devotees nearly lost their ever loving minds when they heard about the pumpkin spice cordials available in Fall. That might speak a little to who the tasting is geared for. I am not one of those girls. I did however like the hard lemonade and the black walnut liquor. I also loved the mixed cocktails, particularly the sex on the peach. After the tasting they offered cocktails at $ 5. This is not a bad deal given you could wander around the grounds, listen to live music and tour a greenhouse with a drink in your hand. I would definitely love this place even more if they made pistachiocello (hint).
If you are in the Charlestown/​Harpers Ferry area, this is a great place to spend an afternoon, definitely worth stopping in!

Like the shines they make and serve, a trip to the Bloomery has many layers. The historic property, the greenhouse, the tasting room in a very old log cabin, the reclaimed bowling alley lane as a tasting table, the fun tenders, to the actual liquors, every aspect of the visit adds to the enjoyment.
I took my father, step mother and a good friend who’s originally from Scotland to the Bloomery yesterday and had a lovely time. My friend was already in love with the Ginger Shine, I gave him some as a present months ago and it reminded him of something he only could get in Scotland (Whiskey Mack.) I’ve been there before, but my friend and family had not.
We began our experience with a trip to the greenhouse to see the lemon trees with lemons the size of small grapefruit and ginger growing in coconut mulch. We walked around the property and were shown where the raspberries are growing, too steep for me, but fun to see all the same. The mountain smelled lovely with the blooming honeysuckle and locust trees. The gardener/​caretaker took his time explaining the historic property to us for which everyone was appreciative — being lovers of all things antique. My father loves log cabins so he was enthralled when we walked into the tasting room.
Our «Fun Tenders» were hilarious and worked great as a team and had all of us, plus two other tasters laughing. Besides the fact that the tasting is as free as it is fun, we were taught the many ways the shines can be used in other drinks and in cooking and baking. There were three mixed concoctions we tried that were phenomenal.
This year their Black Walnut Shine won a double International Gold! And they had the new, and very seasonal Cranberry Clementine Shine which I bought two of so as not to run out. They will not have that shine available much longer.
Next time I will bring a picnic lunch to enjoy afterwards and so that I can do a full tasting and still drive!
Looking for a gift? Every gift of shine I’ve ever given has been welcomed with a huge grin and later a request to visit the Bloomery themselves. So far I’ve brought friends from Scotland, Iowa, Florida and soon Texas. I am so glad they opened back up as I plan many more visits in the future.
And, Yes, I gave this five stars. I will not give it four just to please an algorithm.

Are you in WV? Are you near Harper’s Ferry? Looking for something fun and relaxing to do? And taste booze? And learn delicious recipes? Seek out this place… that makes Sweet Shine… a variation of moonshine…
When driving there, it can be a little tricky. On the side of the road are some little yellow signs pointing to the place. Don’t be shy about the hill– you’ll need some gas to get up it. Park and walk to the house…
They then take you to the tasting. And be prepared for a long and fun tasting. You will be able to taste all of the products that are currently available AND some of the recipes that go with some of them. This is Shine so the proofs are pretty high… just a warning…
Enjoy the tasting. I won’t tell you anymore than it is a fun and entertaining time for the bartenders… and be sure to compliment them!

What is SweetShine? Well, the delightful people at Bloomery Distillery sweeten moonshine with pure cane sugar and farm-​fresh natural ingredients. The results are sweet flavorful liqueurs that are bound to be the stars of your liquor cabinet. You seriously have to try some for yourself. You’d be silly not to.
Complimentary tastings are hosted by hilariously quirky «fun-​tenders». They’ll be your guides and entertainers while you sip on some ‘shine. Don’t be fooled, they’ll certainly charm you into buying a bottle or two. Lets be honest though, you wouldn’t leave empty handed anyway!

This place was so much fun!
I have been to other distilleries for tastings before, and I go to a lot of breweries and wineries for tastings too. But I’ve never been to a place that makes it such a fun Experience (with a capital E!). From the moment my friends and I walked in, we were treated like family. The staff was warm, kind, welcoming, and hilarious.
Unlike other tasting rooms I’ve visited, Bloomery has a really efficient process that allows them to give personalized attention to each group of customers. When you enter, you sign in and only when there is space at one of the bars do you begin your tasting. The wait is never long, but it means that you don’t have to awkwardly stand behind someone or try to get the bartenders attention for another sample.
The tasting itself is free and generous. We tried 8 – 10 samples of their moonshine: peach, raspberry lemonade, chocolate raspberry, pumpkin spice, ginger, black walnut– many unique and tasty flavors. They even have special cocktails that they make with the liquors (such as a ridiculously good dreamsicle one!). They provide each guest with a tasting sheet so you can write notes.
The venue is pretty cute too. Apparently the owner bought the land and the dilapidated building on it on Craigslist. They have made it cozy with a woodstove, twinkle lights, and décor.
This was a great way to start my visit to WV. I’d recommend it to locals and visitors alike!

I saw reviews on trip advisor and this was rated as the number one attraction in Charles Town, so my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. Not gonna lie, but the free liquor tastings was what really caught our eye. We drove from Baltimore, MD and it was roughly an hour and a half away.
We arrived and there was a tasting for a group in progress, but the bartender greeted us and told us that she would be with in a moment. She also gave us a little booklet with drink recipes and a sheet to jot down our ratings of the different «shines» — ranging from meh to the big O.
We sampled roughly 10 of the Shines (except for Pumpkin Spice, but I guess because it wasn’t in season). Our bartender also gave us some samples of the cocktails they had to offer. Our bartender (Allison, I believe) was HILARIOUS. And the Shines were great too! She gave us tons of recommendations on how to incorporate the shines in cooking and in drinks. Soon as my boyfriend and I got home we put the Black Walnut on top of icecream and it was so good!
After the tastings, you can order cocktails for $ 5. I ended up getting the Raspberry Lemon shine Arnold Palmer and it was delicious!
The Raspberry Lemon was my favorite Shine, but I also really enjoyed the Black Walnut and the Hard Lemonade. And you can buy the bottles for roughly $ 26. If I wasn’t so broke I would have bought cases of the Shines! They also sell honey which they make themselves (so yummy!), cigars, coffee, bottle stoppers, etc.
The whole experience was entertaining and is a MUST GO if you are in the Charles Town area (or even if you’re not).
