Bedside manner ranges from doctor to doctor, but they seem to do a good job getting the job done. A-​OK!

If you have been at UNC long, then you know all about this place, and you don’t need me to warn you off. If you are young and inexperienced, though, please heed my words: DO NOT COME HERE FOR HEALTH CARE. I can not put it any more simply than that. You simply don’t know what they will do to you.
Friends of mine have come here and been told they had colds when they had pneumonia, been told they were pregnant when they had the flu, etc. It’s bad.
I went there with mono. I told them that I thought I had mono. Why? Because I had every classic symptom of mono, up to the point that my parents (neither of whom has a scrap of medical training) were able to correctly diagnose me in fifteen seconds from two hundred miles away. This doctor, though, at student health? He insisted that I didn’t have mono. Insisted to the point where he wouldn’t even run the tests. He told me to take Advil and left it at that. After three days I got worse so I came back and insisted on a mono test. This time he said no and diagnosed with with strep throat (without doing a strep test). I insisted on a mono test, INSISTED, and he finally relented, but only after prescribing strep medication. I take the test and go to the pharmacy. While I’m at the pharmacy the call comes in for me to go back to the doctor’s office. Turns out, wonder of wonders, I did have mono, and the doctor was flabbergasted. He actually asked me what made me think I had mono in the first place… Again, EVERY classic symptom. Turns out that the medication he wanted to give me for strep would have made the mono worse! This guy… Ok, I’ve got to stop ranting here before I say something that will get me in trouble for libel.
Bottom line, this is a bad place. I don’t know anyone who has a single positive story to tell about this office, and I myself have had a horrific experience. I believe it to be my sovereign duty to protect anyone who may not know. So please, go to another doctor. Your health is on the line.

My best friend will staunchly reject the fact that I had mono our freshman year of undergrad, though I was diagnosed with it here. She argues I could have walked in with a head-​cold and been diagnosed with mono. (In defense of the mono claim, I did feel miserable and slept for about 3 days straight — though, looking back, this may have been equally attributed to low blood sugar, lack of sleep, and a Thursday-​night frat party.) My best memory of Campus Health was when I suffered a broken foot injury from a ping-​pong game (contact sport, go figure). I thought I could walk from South Campus to the health offices, but I wound up unable to bear any weight on my foot; my boyfriend insisted on carrying me the distance (we were without cars as freshmen). This was sweet (at first), and as it turns out a great deal of bravado! I wound up hopping and hobbling much of the way as we went from sweeping me off my feet, to making me ride piggy-​back style, to putting me down for a ‘rest’.
But back to the matter at hand. Campus Health was always busy and probably therefore quick to write a prescription and send you on your merry way. My broken foot was attended to well, but other maladies were less satisfactory. I did like the women’s health department a lot and would recommend it to others. Also, students can take advantage of one free psychiatry appointment every few months; it’s something I think is useful but little known.
