DJ Feathers Aviary

This store is my favorite place to go during sunny days and rainy days. It’s ran by very friendly couple who have a burning passion for birds! Simply loving what they do makes me fall in love with the place even more. I had a pet sun conure for 5+years or so, I had to give it away because it was too hard to take care of since I participated in many activities as a youngster and throughout highschool. I talked to them and they were able to connect me and all meet up with a very friendly couple who rescues birds. I bought my bird supplies from here and never from pets marts.

Me and my fiancé has stopped in a couple times to this «aviary». We are on a mission to discover our potential future pet parrot, and we couldn’t have stepped into a better place! We met Dave the first day we came in and he spoke over two hours and maintained a happy, passionate demeanor towards us! He was glad to have us picking his brains! Gave us a little tour of the shop birds (that live there, and their history), He showed us a couple birds we were able to handle, explained fundamentals on care taking, and basically educating us on parrots. He’s allowing us to stop by anytime to socialize with the birds and to learn bird mannerisms before we commit. It may take up to a year before we decide on one and he was not pushy at all! He didn’t expect us to buy anything. I am so impressed with the services and impressed with how the aviary is run! Don’t be fooled, this isn’t your basic «pet store». It is run by a family of two highly educated husband and wife breeders.

Went to get toys for our new small animals, easy to get to location and very nice variety. Will definitely return!

We board our African Grey parrot here frequently and found that this business is run in a very responsible and friendly manner. They have a good selection of toys, cages and food items related which will make your bird happy. (:

Great place to get those little ones to add to your family. Very socialize and friendly birds and short healthy.

i like macaw’s and i like buy 2 macaw’s from there.

I love visiting the birds here! I’ve been here a couple of times and was never disappointed.
The store is well organized and the staff is super friendly and professional! Dave is extremely helpful. We probably stayed here for over 2 hours chatting with Dave. He taught us about the birds, let us hold the birds and told us funny stories.
You could tell that the birds are well taken care of and happy here!
Can’t wait to get our new friend here in the future :)

I wanted to wait a while before I wrote my review for DJ Feathers. I purchased a Scarlet Macaw that I named Shiva. When I put a deposit down I foolishly did not research the company and just based my expectations on what other customers had said about them,
the first problem
I had was I figured that they gave the customer an option to clip or not clip the wings (especially since they offer harness training) This was not the case! I asked them to refund my money and they replied saying that they would not clip the wings (PERIOD) but after I went ahead and put down the remaining 1,200.00 they then informed me that they wanted me to sign a contract making me liable for any injury or death in their store as a result of my bird being able to fly. I ended up refusing to sign that and not getting my money back, so I was stuck with only one option… clip his wings. I am still sad to this day that I allowed them to clip his wings., it has stirred up a host of problems that I was not initially prepared for but alas I have adjusted. he on the other hand has not adjusted as well as I had hoped.
now onto second problem…
He is stunted! he has very little interest in any activity that a macaw should be showing interest in at this time. he is out with me almost all day and he simply sits around with his head hung down and appearing very depressed. i am slowly getting him into new things and he is slowly coming around.
third problem
they kept him in the nursery too long and when i asked why he was in there still the reply i got was well we don’t have anywhere on the floor to put him. we are out of cages!!! i was told he would be put out on the floor as soon as one of the other macaws were sold. as a result of this i see very negative habits that have formed. he is somewhat fearful of perches and instead prefers to sit on the floor or bottom of the cage.
fourth problem
they offer harness training but i do not see where he was trained AT ALL. when i first brought the harness out for him, he FREAKED! i have since been able to work with him and i can finally now get one on him.
this last issue i had was with the conditions that their large birds are kept in. They are shoved into way too small cages and as a result have most of their feathers are extremely damaged! some had no tail feathers left!
i think this shop should stick with smaller breeds of birds instead of worrying about making the big bucks with macaws. they do not have the space or hands to properly socialize these birds. i regret my purchase from them with all of my heart but i do love my baby and he will never live in conditions like that again!
my vet was shocked at how dull and destroyed his feathers were when i brought him into her. but thankfully he was healthy, i am giving them 2 stars only because they do seem to do well with smaller birds, shop was clean, and they seem to be somewhat good people despite being very misguided on the care and housing of large macaws.

What a place! I have never visited a pet store like this before. A place where you can really get to know all the different varieties of birds before deciding on which one is for you. There are couches to sit on while you get to know different birds and wonderful staff that answer any questions you might have. They seem more interested in making sure of a good match– and that the bird is going to a good home– than making a sale. Terrific place!

I really really wish we had a place like this in Columbia SC, I can tell from talking to Tammy through emails and reading all the other reviews that this is an awesome store for us bird lovers!
I recently purchased a blue crown conure and she will be here (shipped) dec 3, 2014! Simply cannot wait!
So my little blue crown has arrived just as scheduled on united airlines in her crate very secure with lots of food, and she looked like «get me out now» so we rushed her home and clipped the zip ties off and she jumped right to me and would not let go, she spent a good portion of time on my shoulder just being cuddly and warm, then she explored the bed a bit, of course not without leaving me a few «gifts» behind, but heck I am used to being pooped on it goes with being owned by parrots, she loved my Java tree, and quickly made her way to the top! Then she happily fluffed out, squawks at me and falls asleep.
Ok so I put her to bed in her cage, thinking she needs a good nights sleep after her flight and jet lag. I was worried she may not eat for a while, but I uncover all my birds in the morning and sure enough I caught her eating and drinking and exploring her new cage. We got her a pretty nice cage with lots of toys and a play top.
I just adore her. The owners at DJ Feathers must do an amazing job of hand reading their babies. She is very sweet and not biting or nipping at all. I have already heard her «loud» scream and if you can tolerate and get used to a blue front Amazon scream you can probably handed the scream of a blue crown conure as it is just slightly higher pitch though not that of a sun conure.
She is sweet, lovely, in good feather, clean eyes, normal poop, healthy all around from my inspection and is closed banded.

This is such an amazing bird store! I love being able to hold the birds and learn more about them. The people in the back of the store are always so helpful.
I have been able to get the best items for my conure at this store. The food and packaging is awesome.

Amazing place. If you’re looking for a bird, bird supplies or just sole information, this is the place to go. We’re interested in bring a bird home and really have no idea what’s best for our family. One of the employees here (maybe one of the owners?), spent at least 45 minutes with me, going over specifics with each of the birds, letting them sit in me, etc. She gave us info on habitat, food, everything you need to know to make the best decision. Most importantly, the people here are obviously passionate about exotic birds. Most if not all birds are raised in house and hand fed and appear to be very well taken care of.
You may pay a little more here, but IMO it’s worth it with the wealth of info they can provide, as well as the fact that you’re supporting a family owned business that really cares about what they’re doing.
This is the only place I would visit for my exotic bird needs.

We recently lost our 23 year old Nanday conure because of a cyst. It only took a few days to realize that we had to have another bird, and so we looked into DJ Feathers. We were very impressed with their wonderful aviary and their selection of foods, supplies and toys. We weren’t sure what kind of parrot we wanted this time and so were happy to see a selection of cheerful and healthy medium size parrots, all hand raised. (The many magnificent Macaws were quite a sight!) We were «adopted» by a cute little Senegal, who we visited twice while we waited for her to be old enough to take home. We are just delighted with this beautiful, healthy and lively bird. We would recommend DJ Feathers to any bird lover.

Recently, I purchased a cockatiel and I immediately took her to DJ Feathers Aviary to get her wings and nails clipped. Tammy and another young lady took great care of my cockatiel. They both were very friendly, available to answer all of my hundreds of questions and made us feel very welcome.
The store is huge with an area for bird boarding. They sell everything that you could possibly need to feed and entertain your bird. In the back of the store, you can look at all the birds they have for sale and there is even a small sitting area where you can visit your bird until you are able to take her/​him home with you.

My husband and I purchased 2 cockatiels from Tammy. I put the deposit down in January and the birds came home with us when they were 8 weeks old in March. We were allowed to visit them before the 8 week mark, and we went in 3 times. They have a sitting area where you can sit and play with the birds. It’s comforting.
I have seen a wide array of pet cockatiels and I can honestly say that our birds were VERY well trained. They do not bite and are very playful and sweet. Their temperament towards humans has a lot to do with their first few weeks of life. The folks at DJ Feathers give playtime to the baby birds. If you want to purchase a pet bird for companionship, one who will actually play with you and love you, its best to do it from a breeder, and look no further than DJ Feathers.

This is a wonderful store with great staff and you can tell all of the birds are cared for and not just there to make money off of.
The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about birds and happy to help with any aspect of purchasing and caring for birds.
My wife and I are currently in the process of purchasing a bird from them and it gives us great comfort to see other customers bringing their birds back in to visit even years later.
I highly recommend them for any of your bird related needs.

Tammy is hands-​down one of the best breeders in Virginia. I first learned about DJ Feathers via a library program about 8 years ago, and I purchased a greencheek conure from them about 7 years ago — a conure that is still with me today and one of the healthiest and sweetest birds I’ve ever owned.
The store is always clean and well-​stocked, and the babies there look healthy and happy. The owners are always around and more than happy to answer any questions I have or let me hold a baby bird. All in all, though the store was a long drive from me (I now live in CA), I’d always go out of my way to purchase supplies from them. I wish I could find a place as good where I live now!

DJ feathers is a great facility, especially compared to the other aviary options in the area. We purchased our parrot from them, and have no complaints. The owners are very dedicated to their job, it’s obviously a passion for them and its nice to see how much they care about their birds. Initially, we had lots of questions about the specific species we were getting, and Dave was more than happy to answer all of them and settle any concerns that we had. Tammy is great with handling and wing/​nail clipping. Can’t wait for the new shop so that there is a little more room !

It’s a small place but they still have a great selection of toys and food. They don’t have too many birds, which is great because it means they can take good care of the babies they do have. All the cages looked very well kept, clean with lots of toys and little huts for the babies to sleep in. Though no one here was particularly friendly (really, i haven’t found many bird people who are) they do seem to take good care of the birds and if I were looking for one I’d probably go here first.

DJ feathers is the only place I would ever buy birds from. Their babies are given special care and attention since day 1. The place is clean and has a great selection of toys and supplies as well. Their prices are fair. Tammy and Dave, the owners, are very nice people and very knowledgeable about what they do. You can see their love and dedication in how they handle and treat their birds. They also encourage one visit their baby bird as often as possible until they are weaned and can go home. I got 3 beautiful and healthy birds from them and most of all, they all have a wonderful personality. I wouldn’t think of going anywhere else.
