Makutu’s Island

Yes it’s busy, but it’s awesome! Brought my 3 boys here to celebrate one of their birthdays! I can not get a pic that isn’t blurry because they are having the time of their lives! My boys are 3, 5, and 6 and are able to do most everything without difficulty. I’d say it’s geared more toward kids 4 to 10 but my little guy is hanging like a champ! I also like that all the kids get wrist bands with the family’s last name when you come in and they aren’t able to escape since its gated at the front (a serious concern with this amount of organized chaos).

Wear pants and long sleeves. They recommend it on their website for a reason! I mistakenly dressed myself and my kids in shorts and shortsleeves, we all came out with some serious friction burns from the slides. However — that was MY FAULT for not heeding their advisory.
The good stuff: Nice staff, attentive and greet you cheerfully upon arrival. They seemed organized up front. The place was pretty clean. The big food area and parents lounge is awesome for people with older kids who don’t need constant supervision. The play area is massive and just wows the kids when they walk in… and who doesn’t like to see that. Best of all the games are hidden in the corners for the most part, so kids may not even ask for tokens (yup for me that is a bonus).
The other stuff: The play area is huge, which is awesome for letting the kids get some energy out… but impossible to find your kiddos when its time to leave. They say you must follow your under 5 year old through structures, which is next to impossible unless you are Tyrion Lannister or smaller. They ladders and things are not well maintained, they are chipping paint, lights out in tiny caverns making them pitch black, and definitely not open enough for parents to follow a little one through. They definitely have inadequate staff for the size of the place, and there is no stopping the tweens & almost tweens from trampling the 5 – 8 year olds while climbing, or knocking smaller kids off climbing structures.
We came at noon, and it was at least an hour before anyone staffed the zipline, so many too small children were using it and falling, no one was monitoring the safety of the kiddos — including the parents.
The games — OMG. So pricey. 2 – 6 tokens a game, and 40 tokens for 10 bucks… yikes! Woah. And the payouts are tiny. Chuck E Cheese lets you in free… just sayin.
Anyhow, i felt like we had a good time and the scars from the slide burns will always remind me of the happy memories we made here.

Very loud (but you expect that from a kid’s indoor park, right?). Pizza here is awesome; you gotta try the chicken tikka pizza. Small but nice arcade in the corner. Parent’s/adult «lounge» is very small and not actually a separate room, but it does have several outlets to plug in phones, etc.
For the cheap price, definitely worth it to get the kids out of the house during the hot AZ summers. :)

It is a really fun place for kids 5 and older, or in my case a well coordinated 4 year old as well. The areas for younger then 3 ½ leave a lot to be desired. If this place actually had a fun area to climb and explore (and be happily contained) for the younger siblings I would give it 5 stars. As is, however, if you have a toddler expect to have to find ways to activity distract them so they don’t get board with the toddler area.

I don’t think many parents climb with their kids. Or the employees. If they did, they would see clumps of dust bunnies in the corners and crevices and piles on top of the climber and netting. I’m not talking, «whoops…forgot to wipe the tv down a few weeks in a row after a dust storm came by my house WITH Windows that need replacing.» I’m talking, «whoops, I haven’t moved that piece of furniture from that corner since I moved in 5 years ago, did I?»
Sure enough, my son and I had an asthma and allergy attack. When I asked the manager about how often they clean, they claim to «blow out the dust» every Friday night. That would mean clumps of dust appear, coat, and settle bigger than anything I have seen in 4 days.
Also, kids are running and climbing with open snacks and candy leaving sticky messes all throughout the climber. I’m not talking about 1 random unsupervised kid, I’m talking about an entire bus or two full since we opted to go on a day a few camps let their 5 year olds loose.
Furthermore, if you are an adult that climbs with the kiddos be prepared for 2 to 6-​year-​olds climbing over you. That Annette so if it’s no big deal and I certainly don’t mind putting my foot down and telling a little one to wait their turn to not step on people when things get out of hand, however, I worry about them… those exact kiddos climbing over adults are also climbing over one another through very dark corridors and crevices. Lighting is terrible and no adult or employee is at the top making sure your kids aren’t getting stepped on or falling. I rescued at least three children during the short hour we were there. Two of which were trying to climb up a ladder one was trying to go down. One was sweaty, panicked, hanging off a ledge and had been screaming for help for a while until I could actually see through the dark where this child was. Another one, an older child had pulled on my shirt to tell me her friend needed help and was stuck. Two out of three of these kids were campers, but if I were a mom that wanted to keep at least the corner of my eye on my kids, I think monitors would be ideal as well as better lighting. It terrifies me to think of what might’ve happened to that sweaty kid hanging off a little ledge at least 5 feet above the platform.
If you have allergies, a fear (or just slight hesitation) of germ infestations, consider capacity and weight limits not just more useless writing, and wonder when the last time any adult checked the safety (think loose bolts, weak knotting, sloping & dented climbing surfaces), this is NOT the place for you and your kiddos.

We went early on a Wednesday, and it was pretty nice for about an hour. Then 2 different groups came in for what I’m assuming to be field trips and it got a little crowded.
The facility itself was super clean, which is always a plus. Kikis Café has a few things to eat at a decent price.
My kids are 6 and 9 years old, and one 11 month old, and they all had fun. I wish they had one on the West side.

My daughter (2.5 years old) and I went on a Sunday and had a blast. I was impressed by how much there was to do — for little kids and big kids… and me. We will definitely go back. I only wish they had better quality and healthier food options. Note to parents: you should be in decent shape if you plan to follow your child through all of the tunnels, slides, etc. It’s definitely a workout for the whole family.

This place was great to take my 5 year old and her 9 year old friend to. We were planning on staying only a little while, and it ended up turning into a day long activity and I still don’t think we saw everything they offered. Will definitely go there again!

This place is amazing and a lot of fun! I would have given it five stars if it wasn’t for one thing… The bungee jump. You pay $ 5.99 for a number. They called a group of numbers, for example, 40 – 55. Our number was 44. I found my daughter and we got in line. They were most definitely NOT calling the kids in order. The first kid that went was 47. Whatever, we just stood in line. We stood in line for an HOUR waiting. I suppose we could have cut to the front and showed our number, but I’m not really that type of parent. Finally she was next. By this time the kid in front of her was 59. Someone was pushing to the front cause their kid was 58 or something. I stopped at that point and said ours was 44. They said oh well you missed it, you have to get a new number and start over. WHAT?! Hell no. We are not starting again! I explained that we had been waiting in line for an hour and they most definitely didn’t call any number aside from the group of numbers. They didn’t let her go. So now I am extremely angry and she’s extremely upset. They did give me a refund for the bungee jump, and a free bungee pass for next time, but still. Would it have been so hard to let her go after we waited so long?

Went for the first time ever today (Memorial Day) and while it was «busy», it was not overwhelming for my almost 3 year old and 1 year old. They both thoroughly enjoyed themselves. My oldest especially, she climbed the whole tree, went down slides, loved the bungie jump, and finished off with the arcade. My youngest was able to walk all around and take in all the sights while enjoying the toddler slides. Pizza was yummy and so was the cookie and scoop of ice cream. The staff and the management are wonderful. I met the owners and the manager, as well as all the supervisors working at the time and was so pleased with their customer service and attention to detail. We’ll be booking my daughter’s 3 year old birthday party here and coming back more in the future. Both kids are now completely zonked out, it’s great! Awesome job Makutu’s!

Just moved here and this is by far one of the best places we have been. Kids LOVED it! As Homeschoolers we were able to come early and avoid crowds. Had a fantastic time, we will definately be back!

I like Makutu’s. I’ve been coming here on and off for years. Today was my first time back in almost 2 years. The bungee jump is a cool new feature. It still needs better lighting in some of the areas but my biggest pet peeve today was the temperature. It was pretty busy, with LOTS of kids running around… It gets hot and stuffy in here. They do have a few fans circulating but maybe a couple more fans along with dropping the AC a few degrees would help. The huge grey slides are fun, I always make sure to slide down those slides myself… But it would be nice to lubricate them or something. I literally saw and felt sparks from the static electricity. All that aside, my twin 5 year old nephews had a blast here on their first visit to Makutu’s. I’m sure they’ll beg me to come back again… Just like my now 9 year old nephew has been doing since he was 5 himself.

Highly recommend my oldest son (4.5) is obsessed and my other 2yo is as well its a little tuff to find them up at the top so you still wanna keep and eye out especially if they’re little as they do have an age limit. It’s a nice fun relaxing. Place to go! My kids will Not stop asking to go back lol

This is a cool place for older kids. My daughter is going to be 3 and even though they have an area for smaller children my daughter wanted nothing to do with it. The larger slides and play areas were more appealing to her. I climbed the play place with her which was fun but a challenge. The crawl spaces and slides aren’t made for those of us with wide hips lol. I’d recommend a weekday where they might be slower. I can’t imagine what weekends look like there! All in all I’d go back when my daughter is older and can go through everything on her own!

Love this place — awesome for birthday parties!!! Especially great for summer activities — love the food too :) the kids really have a good time

We celebrated our son’s birthday here, after visiting a few times. The location is clean and well maintained, staff was professional, the kids had a blast, the food was tasty (including gluten free options) and everyone had a great time. The bday packages may seem pricey, but when you breakdown the cost of the food, drinks, entertainment, cleanup and the fact that your child cannot leave without you unless the wristband matches yours, it is totally worth the price. I would recommend Makutu’s Island to anyone

Great Place. Mainly came here for the food which was excellent. If I had kids I would bring them here. Hands down much better then Chucky Cheese.

I’m writing this review from the perspective of an adult, mainly the food. I was doing some work across the street and was craving pizza. I found out that Makutus island served pizza. Found their number, gave them a call and placed an order for pick up.
The pizza was great and I like how the pepperonis actually had a slight crunchiness to them. The pizza here reminds me of a place called Fast Pizza in California, and that is probably why I like it so much.
The staff was very courteous and admission into the café is always free. Everyone who works here actually seem to be very nice and smiling all the time!
If I had kids I’d definitely take them here as that tree looks fun to climb through! I can say that the food is good and the kids looked like they were having a good time!

My family was visiting from out of state and we wanted to take my two children who are 6 and 7 to a fun place. This indoor fun field playground was just the spot. Really enjoyed seeing all the kids smiling and having fun. The climbing structures where great and kept the kids entertained. I would definitely suggest this place to any parent who want to get out the house with there kids and enjoy watching them have fun. I liked that the parents where free to enter only having to pay entry for the kids. In addition plenty seating areas so the parents can kick back and not be stressed about the safety of there children. The only negative I could say or really more of a suggestion PLEASE OIL DOWN the grey slide. Very dry and I witnessed many kids get arm and leg burns coming down. My son even burned his elbow because the slide was extremely dry and rough.

Maybe it was just because it was MLK Day and lots of parents had the day off, but it was extremely crowded. Chaos with kids running from every direction. I quickly found the ‘3 year and younger’ section and hid for safety.
This place is like jubeelieve on steroids!
The Groupon was a good value since it covered admittance for 2 adults, our kid, included lots of tokens for games and 2 free drinks.
I was so stressed out after leaving. My 3 year old daughter loved it though.

Justin, the manager is ridiculous. I was here for a birthday party and we were given bad instructions. The birthday boy was made to wait for a half hour before using the eurobungee jumper. They then refused to let him on because he didn’t have the right card, despite being told it wouldn’t be a problem by another staff member.
When we explained the problem to Justin he was rude and unwilling to listen to reason. He was just being jerk for absolutely no reason. $ 600 for a kid’s birthday and they don’t let him jump on a damn trampoline! Needless to say they’ve lost out on our business for good. This guy needs to be fired.

We won’t be returning to Makutu’s Island. We went on a weekday with my 11 year old niece and my son who is about to turn 5. We stayed less than an hour.
The first problem was that they admitted entirely too many people. It was the very end of Christmas break, so I expected some extra crowds but this was unsafe. They had a field trip there, on top of extra traffic. Every area was so crammed full of people that it was a mosh pit waiting to happen. Children were literally crawling over each other in the play structures. It was highly irresponsible for Makutu’s Island to admit so many people simultaneously. And with all ages and sizes being in the structures together, someone was bound to get trampled.
Secondly, it’s very dark inside. My niece said that she had trouble seeing in front of her. My son was afraid of how dark and crowded it was. My niece knew it wasn’t frightening, but still said that the darkness impeded her enjoyment.
The bathrooms were gross.
They were tremendously understaffed, with just 3 people checking in the massive line of people, and one person working the food line.
The volume was so loud that there was no way you could communicate with your party.
We left after 45 minutes of madness. I asked if we could come back another time when it was quieter to at least redeem our tokens and was told we’d have to pay admission again, even though I have zero intention of returning my son to the climbing structures.
We won’t be back to this pit.

If only places like Makutus Island, Chucky Cheese, Peter Piper Pizza, etc. would realize that you CAN provide GREAT food with a play environment and if done, parents, especially Dads, would love to come.
Instead they compromise and feel it is okay to serve crappy overpriced food in place of a fun experience.
Regarding Makutus, even my 6 yr old granddaughter says, «I do not like their pizza.»
I give this place 5 stars for play environment but only 2 for food. Think that averages out to about 3 stars.
