The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad provides a beautiful railroading experience in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Powered by coal fired, steam locomotives and following the original Rio Grande Narrow Gauge line, a ride on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the best way to experience the authentic west. The 64 mile train excursion travels through valleys, over trestles, through tunnels and along canyon walls. Each regular excursion includes a wonderful lunch at the historic Osier Station where hot meals such as baked turkey, meatloaf and other wonderful foods are prepared fresh daily. Come, view summers full of wildflowers and autumn full of colors. Enjoy the serenity of the quaint Village of Chama, New Mexico and city of Antonito, Colorado. You won’t be disappointed!
History
Established in 1880.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad started as a section of the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad in 1880. In 1970 it became the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad when the States of Colorado and New Mexico bought the section of track and equipment. The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad has been in continuous service ever since. There have been obstacles, such as the Lobato Trestle fire in 2010– however, the train continued to run even then, as the tenacious staff found a way to run the excursion from Cumbres Pass, Co to Antonito, Co. In 2011 full service was restored. Excursions run from Memorial Day weekend through mid October.
