I’ve given this place several tries as it came highly recommended by some friends of mine who are regulars. The first time I did a specialty coloring and cut, and the second just a cut. My hair is curly, and if stylists aren’t very familiar with different types of curly hair it can be quite easy to get a bad cut, and I picked this place particularly because my friends advised me that they do well with curly hair. Unfortunately after my experiences, I have to disagree. My first time, the coloring was great, I liked the color a lot, but it wasn’t anything overly complicated as I already had lightened areas myself, and she was only putting color on top of what was already blocked out for her. Still, I was quite happy with the color mix as it was a custom blend, and I felt like she really tried to please me. She listened to me carefully, didn’t cut it shorter then I indicated, and seemed to really take her time and make sure I was comfortable. The cut was OK, not stellar, and not bad. However, when I got home and my hair had fully dried, I realized the bottom was not shaped at ALL, and was only blunt cut. This looks absolutely horrid on curly hair in the style I have, and I had to wind up recutting the bottom myself, and shaping it with more artful tapered cuts. The next time I went was a long time later, and I had forgotten about my previous experience. Silly me, all I remembered was the lovely color, so I thought I would be in good hands. This time I was going for a similar cut to what I had before, only taking off a few more inches. I described in full detail what I wanted. My experience this time was significantly more rushed, as it was a pretty busy day, and from start to finish I felt like I got the bum rush, as opposed to the more relaxed feel the time before. Now my hair is typically extremely long, and I wanted to chop off quite a bit, but not all of it. I specifically noted where I wanted it cut to, and said I wanted to keep as much length as possible in the back. Most stylists will give you the courtesy of confirming how much they are cutting off before they scalp you, to make sure you are really getting what you want. Not only did she chop off 4 – 5 inches more than I indicated, but she did so with such inattentiveness and no warning that it happened before I knew what hit me — my girlfriend in mid-lunge off her chair in a comedic slow motion ‘nooooooo’. The rest of the haircut was over almost before it began, and after a quick application of gel and a few puffs of the blow dryer, the whole experience took a total of about 10 minutes. Now if you’re THAT good that you can perform a masterful cut with your eyes shut, I don’t care if it takes 5 minutes or 50, but this was hardly that. Extra length gone aside, the bottom was handled horribly, and as it dried more it became apparent it was another blunt cut bottom, which turned into a hideous tee-pee shape. Adding to this offence, the layers had no integration and looked like a roughly chopped staircase going up my head. This time it took me and a friend both to fix the haircut, and it was about midway through the task that I remembered having to fix my hair the last time too. I realized this salon simply can’t be trusted with my hair, especially not on a busy day, and decided not to return. As a side note, my girlfriend said she wasn’t happy with her cut either and her hair is a different texture and style than mine.

Tonia is the best. I recently moved from NYC and was pretty stressed out about finding a salon. What I found at D’Agostino Hair Artistry was better than any other salon I’ve ever been to. The salon is always clean, you are greeted as soon as you walk in the door and everyone is friendly. It is so easy to call to make an appointment; she is so accommodating. I’m never in sticker shock when I walk out and I always have a smile on my face. Now for the cut & color… Tonia knows what she is doing. You can bring in a picture and that is how you will walk out of the salon. She really is awesome at color matching. After bouncing to salon after salon in NYC, I won’t go anywhere else.
