History

Established in 1996.

The building was built in 1893, and although the businesses in it have changed, the superstructure is still the same. It served as a hotel until the early 1990’s, and closed due to economic fluctuations. The building seemed destined for demolition.

In 1996, The Continental was restored to what it is today. The restaurant and first floor still has the original flooring, ceiling, and oak staircase. Many guests enjoy visiting our small barbershop museum, or viewing our antique switchboard. Located on the «World’s Largest Town Square,» We operate three businesses; an executive suite hotel, apartments for the independent well elderly, and one of the area’s leading restaurants.

The food probably would have been really good if I got what I ordered. Too bad at least 10 minutes went by before my waitress came back to my table to check on me. Did not have the time to wait. Ate what I got and went about my day. Terrible service. Really cool looking place with a lot of potential though. Just needs better management. The waitress was complaining loud enough for me to hear about the $ 3 tip she got from the only other table in the room as me. She needs to be fired IMO. I’ve never said that about. Waitress before. I think this is not her thing.

Staff couldn’t have been any nicer. The food was adequate to put it mildly and the waiter needs some training although a very nice young man. Our salad was brought out after our steaks and the rib eye steaks were way way over cooked. Asked for medium and came out past well. If they tweak the service and teach their servers more appropriately this would have been a great stop in a small town.

Thank you, Unilocal,for helping me discover this landmark. I have driven around the Centerville Square many times without realizing this wonderful dining experience was right under my nose.
From the moment I walked in the door and enjoyed the architecture and historic integrity, the mood was set for a wonderful experience. It is so refreshing to find a business committed to restoration and preservation of a landmark instead of plowing it down and putting up something new.
Our lunch was marvellous!!! I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the fresh Cream of Asparagus Soup served in the delicious bread bowl.
The staff was attentive and friendly and they took time to really make the us feel welcome.

Beautiful, unique setting with history. The service was excellent. They really care about their customers. The food, however, was standard. I got the seaside sampler and it was pretty ok. Husband got the Reuben and was again standard. Nothing to write home about but definitely the best in town. Worth the drive from Rathbun.
