Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department

This is a fantastic place to get your pistol permit in Birmingham. If you like your guns, and you like to carry them responsibly, you may qualify for a pistol permit. Alabama is considered an «open carry» state. However, concealing your weapon without a permit is a very serious offense. There is rarely a line, the officers are polite, and its conveniently located.
I have used this location several times. Before the laws changed, I had to renew yearly. Each time, I never waited in line. This is a pretty infrequently used location to get your permit.
The officers are always really nice to me. They don’t pepper spray me for no reason. They don’t verbally abuse me, or even try to molest me in any way. They honestly look like they enjoy their jobs and don’t treat me like an inconvenience.
It’s pretty conveniently located. Of course if you live on the other side of Birmingham, you may want to go downtown. Its just off center parkway, located to a tag/​tax office. It has its own separate small parking lot which is pretty easy to find spaces.
The Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department location at the Centerpoint Substation is pretty awesome. I usually don’t have the best things to say about Jefferson County public services, but this is an exception.
