Specialties
Basically we are family photographers, but that doesn’t mean we only create family portraits. There are actually two types of photography we kind of specialize in, Family Portraits and Senior Portraits.
Family portraits are kind of a broad brush stroke at our studio. Of course we photograph families, often in or at their home. We have a really cool studio, big enough to handle nearly any size group, but we just love to work on location. And of course families also include photographing everything from maternity to babies, toddlers to teenagers. I love seeing and working with a family over and over again!
Senior Portraits are unique unto themselves. I’ve been doing senior portraits since I was just barely older than a high school senior myself. Sometimes I forget how old I am because every year I get to hang out with seniors. I love doing senior portraits, we have the greatest time just being silly and having fun. And the portraits are always so cool too.
History
Established in 1981.
In 1976, while serving in the Air Force, a neighbor introduced Michael to photography. Michael’s new passion instilled an unquenchable desire to understand and improve his craft. Five years later, a friend well acquainted with Michael’s love for photography, asked him to photograph her wedding. A new career was born as Michael began providing wedding and portrait photography. Michael continued to study and learn from the nation’s best photographers and in 1989 earned recognition as one of Nebraska’s «Top Ten Photographers». Returning in 1992 to his hometown Cedar Rapids, Michael started Heartscape Studios through which he continues his life goal to make a difference.
Today, Michael is a portrait photographer specializing in low volume, high service, fine custom portraiture. Michael has no restrictions on the amount of time spent with his clients in creating their portraits. After the photography, Michael takes additional time with his clients to help them determine the best portrait.

Business Owner
We are only given a certain amount of time in this world and I want to make a difference. In my life I have but one goal, that is to affect the lives and touch the hearts of those I come in contact with. Whether it be by helping a young photographer in quest of a dream, making tangible the love a family shares for each other, or bringing a mother to tears as she clutches a photograph of her child, I want to make a difference. These moments are precious to me, and they are what we human beings live for. — Michael Ask
