History

Established in 1887.

Coldwell Banker Hedges Realty has been based in Cedar Rapids since its founding in 1887, by George T. Hedges. George T. Hedges formed Hedges Company, a real estate and insurance company, and opened its business at First Avenue and Second Street SE, now the site of the American Building in downtown Cedar Rapids. George T. Hedges was the first president of the Cedar Rapids Board of Realtors from 1917 through 1919.

For nearly three-​quarters of a century, the company was owned and operated by Hedges family members. In 1982, Hedges Associates was purchased by Carl Esker and Ron and Kay Baty.

In 1989, the Coldwell Banker franchise was purchased, which added national exposure for the company. «The Hedges name had an excellent reputation in real estate so we decided to continue with the name,» said Carl Esker. «Our sincere interest is in serving our clients to our highest and best ability and in return our clients have been loyal to us.»

It is believed that Coldwell Banker Hedges Realtr is the oldest real estate firm in the state of Iowa still operating under the name of its founder, George T. Hedges.
