Violin and Viola Lessons

Working with All Ages & Skill Levels

Comprehensive Musical Training to Encourage Creativity and Excellence!

Lessons emphasize how to practice, discovering the student’s preferred learning style, and the development of tone and musicality. Ms. Detlefs has helped students win a place in their high school’s intermediate orchestra after only two years of violin lessons, and many of her students in both junior and high school play in their schools’ most advanced orchestras. Ms. Detlefs’ students develop a set of polished, memorized classical repertoire; learn songs both by ear and musical notation; range in age from 5 to 55 years old; have written their own arrangements; have learned folk music from India and Eastern Europe, as well as played Celtic, Bluegrass, Old Time Fiddle, and popular music from Enya to Pirates of the Caribbean. In addition to school sponsored concerts and festivals, violinists and violists of the Make Waves string studio are motivated to polish their pieces for the 3 to 4 recitals per year held by Ms. Detlefs for her students

Business Owner

Lea Detlefs was given a violin at the age of seven by her grandfather, and between him and a neighbor who happened to be a retired violist from the Detroit Symphony, her musical education began. She has been playing violin for nearly 20 years now, and viola for 15. Lea studied Violin Performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Gregory Fulkerson for one year, and later returned home to study violin at the University of Michigan School of Music under Yehonatan Berick and Gabriel Bolkosky. After graduating in 2010 she became a member of the Dearborn Symphony, and was a frequent substitute for the Toledo and Plymouth Symphonies. She has attended numerous summer music festivals, including Meadowmount School of Music in New York, Domaine Forget in Quebec, and the Phoenix Phest! in Ann Arbor, MI. She has also attended Mark O’Connor’s fiddle camp in Tennessee, where she was inspired to take up Appalachian fiddling. Lea has maintained a private studio for 10 years.
