History

Established in 2007.

Creative U’s owner, Kathleen Doherty got kicked out of her house. Well, Kathy wasn’t kicked out, but her husband had had enough of all the glass art and jewelry-making equipment taking over their kitchen and garage. (Kathy doesn’t cook so she filled the kitchen cabinets and drawers with art supplies).

Around the same time, Kathy was wishing for a community of artists to work with and share ideas. She was tired of working alone. She dreamed of a place where artists could work together, share some laughs, and critique each other’s work and share design ideas. Kathy’s friend Debbie Hunt shared the dream.

Creative U was born.

A year after Kathy’s husband «kicked her stuff out,» the shop was located, construction was completed and Creative U opened in October of 2007. Jen Hanscom joined Kathy and Debbie and the three of them have worked together to make their dream come true. The shop is a truly supportive and fun environment for artists.

We hope you come join the fun.

Business Owner

Kathleen Doherty is a lifelong craftsperson and artist. She began her pursuit of art at age nine when she grew out of her favorite dress and with no sewing experience or help tried to make a new one in a larger size.

That first dress didn’t work out but Kathy kept sewing, began knitting, learned to fuse glass, expanded into making jewelry with her fused glass pieces. .. and continues to explore every art form that comes her way.

Kathy is a former high school teacher and has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Teaching.
