Okay so I know that Cave City isn’t exactly replete with hotel options but we were there to see Mammoth Cave National Park(which was pretty cool) and it was ranked #2 of 11 over at that travel site everyone uses so I figured, «why not? We’re only staying a night, how bad can it be?». Well given what I know now, I’d rather try one of those other ten or press on towards Elizabethtown. Of course this is all assuming that I’m ever going to be visiting Cave City again… as lovely as Kentucky is and as much as I enjoyed the caves, I have a lot of other places I’d like to see first! Anyhow I’ve stayed at several Best Western locations over the years and unfortunately I would have to rank this near the bottom. Very much a motor inn type place, it’s a single level facility where you’re able to park right in front of your room(something I actually rather like). Also like the fact that it’s close to the interstate and you can walk to El Mazatlan(a good Mexican restaurant) and a nice liquor store. The pool and hot tub are also pretty decent, although I only briefly got a chance to use them. The breakfast wasn’t the best but at least it offered a good selection of eggs, sausage, pancakes, bagels, oatmeal, etc. I always appreciate a place that has more than just your basic continental breakfast options even if it isn’t super tasty. I’m usually too tired to notice anyways and just happy to save a few bucks on breakfast AND have sort of protein. It would be a decent three star place that is simple but adequate but there were a few issues that force me to bump it down a notch. Check in was efficient albeit a little surly, but I’ll attribute that to the 95 degree heat that day. Less impressive was the fact that the A/C wasn’t on in our room when we walked in. Now I know that it’s expensive to constantly be running that thing all the time but after driving for several hours and unloading our luggage, the last thing I want is to walk into a stifling, stuffy room. It’s a little thing and the air worked just fine but it sort of bugged me a bit. That was a fairly minor issue. More egregious were the beds(not too comfortable), the overall cleanliness of the room(not really that bad but you could tell that whoever vacuumed and tidied up did a fairly lazy job) and the fact that the shower did not drain well at all. One look at the drain told the story as to why… I didn’t want to complain, I just wanted to get out of the tub and forget that I had ever been in it. Also have to dock points for the very spotty and temperamental WiFi and a refrigerator that never worked properly. So again, I probably wouldn’t stay again unless the price was really right for one night. But I must ask the question: if this is the #2 ranked place in town, how does #9, 10 or 11 look? Never mind… I don’t want to know.

Place rating: 3 Lake City, MI
This place was good for a one night stay prior to visiting Mammoth Cave. The accommodation was adequate and clean. I liked the fact that the rooms all have private entries and parking lot right in front. The reason why I am only giving 3 stars is because — 1) when I came in the lobby, it smelled really strongly like smoke. I had to double confirm that they are giving me a non smoking room. I think the employees were smokers and they didn’t close the door when they smoked outside or something. The next morning when I came to check out, there wasn’t any smoke smell, so that was good. 2) they were renovating the lobby so we didn’t have breakfast options that are usually available with Best Western. The continental was OK, and were pretty good, but hot breakfast would’ve been better.
