Trax On Wax

This is my absolute favorite record store! I’ve been in quite a few in the Maryland area as well as some down in Memphis, TN and this one is still the best. You can’t beat their selection of used records and their new records section has been growing. The owner and manager are extremely friendly and helpful and know what their customers like… The owner has even held some records to show me when I came into the store. Check out Trax on Wax… you won’t be disappointed!

Situation
1) I was looking for NEW vinyl. DONE!
2) I had to return an album which was scratched. DONE!
3)I was interested in a new genre of music and needed help. DONE!

This is the best record store in all of Maryland. They have everything you could hope to find. Gary is wonderful. I discovered this place about a year ago and I try to get in there at least once a month. The store is well organized and the LPs are in great condition. They even have a listening area where you can listen to the albums before you buy them. I have never asked about an album or an artist that they didn’t know something about. I do visit most of the other record stores in the area and I can tell you that this one is by FAR the best. The prices are fair and the selection is second to none. Visit Trax on Wax and visit there often. This place deserves to be supported.

This store is a really nice addition to the Baltimore record store scene.
I lived in Baltimore from 2007 to 2009, and this shop opened in the ensuing years. I’ve heard good things about Trax On Wax and finally had the chance to visit recently when I made a trip up from the Washington, D.C., region, where I live now.
Wax on Trax is a virtually all-​vinyl shop with a good amount of used and new records stuffed in the bins in a variety of genres — rock, R&B, country, jazz and more. The stock is heaviest on 1960s to 1980s rock music, but you’ll find other records here as well. I spent about two hours in the store and could have used even more time. The bins are so full that I often had to remove a few records in order to flip through the other offerings!
I found a few LPs that I would consider rare, and I left a few others behind that were even rarer and a little pricier than I wanted to pay at the moment. The shop’s selection is pretty deep and well organized, and your patience in digging through the bins will be rewarded. Prices are a touch high in my opinion, but that didn’t really bother me because the used records are generally in excellent condition. There is also a fair amount of 45s here, and there are some interesting books, T-​shirts and other music memorabilia as well. I also spotted some new turntables and record cleaning machines for sale, which is cool.
The owner/​operator of the store was working behind the counter, and he is very friendly and helpful. I’d love to come back and check out this store again. If you’re a fan of vinyl, I highly recommend Trax On Wax.

This store is AMAZING! Everything you want in a record shop. EVERY time I walk out of this shop, I’m a happy happy man. The owner (I think he’s the owner, grey beard wears a hat) is very friendly and knows what he has in stock. The employees that’ve helped me are great too.
The selection is STELLAR. I could spend all day there.

More albums than you can browse in a day, or two. Fair prices and knowledgable staff.

For selection? This can’t be beat. It’s heaven. If there’s something you want, come here. But don’t pick because you’ll end up with a $ 200 bill… it’s happened to me

I don’t know how anyone would give this store less than five stars. The staff is helpful and very knowledgeable. I drive some ways to go here, and I have to be honest out of the stores I have seen in the area, this one makes you enjoy coming back. People above are crying about pricing etc, but let us be honest. If you go on ebay for NM and VG++ records you are paying at least the same once shipping is included or more so stopping whining. It is the first store I haven’t felt like mold was invading my bloodstream. People complain about way too much instead of taking a real good look at the services being offered.

Selection is fairly comprehensive. As mentioned previously, the price points tend to be a bit hefty, but it’s still a fun trip and there are lots of LPs to look through should you have some time to browse through.
The two star rating alludes to something I find a little shady. Upon selecting a few yet-​to-​be-​priced LPs, I brought them to the counter and requested an estimate. I was told one of the albums I found «was going for $ 600». I asked if this was the resulting total of an actual sale, or simply a «buy it now» type of thing (ebay, etc.) that someone posted. I was told that this was the actual amount of the sold item, so I declined. I returned home, did a little on-​line research and found an example of the LP being sold… for about $ 120. Same pressing. Same condition. Hmm…

I’ve been to Trax On Wax numerous times. Although it’s not right around the corner, I’ll drive the 20+ miles to dig for a few hours!
THE GOOD…
–big selection, most genres
–found some gems and crossed off a few on my «want list»
–owner is friendly and cares about his customers
–listening station that’s easily accessible
–bathroom for customers to use (rare for most record shops)
–100% satisfaction guarantee on records (I’ve had something happen once and returned without any problem)
–tons of soundtracks
–stocks tons of new records, reissues and does record store days
–flexible hours of operation
THE BAD …
–too much filler and duplicates of records
–record bins are UNBELIEVABLY tight the only way to really pick through is to take a handful out
–wished there was better organization for soul and r&b
–parking can be a pain at times, but really depends on the day/​time
Overall Trax On Wax is a good shop. At times it can be a great shop. Though there are things that could be better, it’s one of the top 5 shops in the Greater Baltimore area.
I never leave with less than 5 records in hand!

Great Store reminds me of the Good Old Days when you walked in and the place smells of Incense and The owner is Real nice and Makes you feel at home!!! The Prices are very Decent And the selection Great Best Record store in Maryland!!!
Still Love to go there Even though its been a While Gary Has a Beautiful Store For us Record Lovers!

Trax on Wax is the Vinyl Solution!
Catonsville’s vinyl-​only Trax on Wax (run by former Record & Tape Collector employee Gary Gebler), is our favorite new «real record» record store!
My girlfriend Amy-​the-​discerning-​music-​shopper really scored there on a recent outing, bagging a motherlode of «black plastic with a hole in the middle.» While I scoured through bins of Frank Sinatra records I already owned, she adroitly scavenged the new and used bins with breathtaking efficiency, picking up four Pete Shelley records (Homosapien, XL-​1, Heaven and the Sea, and a «Telephone Operator» 12-​inch EP) — thus adding to her burgeoning Buzzcocks Completist Collection… plus she scored two Godley & Crème LPs (L and The History Mix Volume 1) — thus adding to her fledgeling-​but-​already-​burgeoning new obsession of recollecting all the 10cc and 10cc-​related records she sold after discovering punk rock in 1976 (ah, the follies, faults and foibles of fickle-​minded Youth!)
Amy was especially thrilled with her History Mix score, as this was the Trevor Horn/J.J. Jeczalik (Art of Noise) collaboration LP that saw Godley and Crème remix songs from their career with 10cc («Rubber Bullets,» «Minnestrone»), Doctor Father, and Hot Legs. It also featured the single «Cry,» which was was popular enough to be played on the TV show Miami Vice and for which Godley and Crème produced a groundbreaking «face morphing» music video that got quite a bit of airplay on MTV. Godley and Crème used analog cross-​fading to create their 1985 morph video, years before the technology advanced leaps and bounds in Michael Jackson’s famous 1991 music vid «Black and White.»
Along with El Suprimo Records in Fell’s Point (where the taste and collection admittedly gets a bit more eclectic and off-​the-​wall), Trax on Wax is a vinyl junkie’s dream.

Trax on Wax is a good record store. It’s well organized and you get nice, clean copies. Most are reasonably priced. Amazing selection!
In response to the previous review, it’s arbitrary to rate a record store on the absence of crumbly old stickers affixed to every surface. Trax On Wax sells vinyl. That’s rock and roll PERIOD The End. 5 stars!

Nice little store that I imagine will start to come into its own more as the community embraces the local/​small town feel of this record spot.
–Good selection of new and old vinyl at decent prices
–Friendly owner who is willing to help
–The only CDs they carry are local bands… kinda cool
–Small selection of t-​shirts/​stickers/​puzzles/​posters and other music-​themed doodads.
— Rare funk/​jazz/​bluesy stuff as browsing music
–They will buy your old vinyl or convert it to CD for you
I can’t put my finger on it, but Trax on Wax still seems a little sanitized and less «lived in» than other Baltimore record stores. This could be a plus for you if you’re over the sticker-​covered dorm room feel of the others. It does seem as if the owners have plans to grow Trax on Wax into a destination where you can really hang, so I’ll be back to check soon!
