Weiwei Xu, MD

I’m not giving this any type of star rating.(if there is a zero star, then that’s what Dr. Xu deserves). I would schedule for an early appoint as soon as the office opens, which is 8:30a and I ended up waiting until 9:15a before, I got called into a room. I then informed the nurse that I needed to leave and they need to reschedule me, she insisted that I wait and she would go get Dr. Xu. When she came into the room, she told me my issue and said for me to keep taking the medicine she had given me samples of. Upon exiting the room, I spoke with the nurse at the front desk, who informed me that they would call my prescription in to the pharmacy. I told her which pharmacy I used and left thinking they would call the prescription in. That was a week ago today. I’m still waiting for them to call in the prescription in. I’ve tried calling Dr. Xu’s office only to get her voicemail box over and over again. I’ve left several messages and no one has returned my calls from any one on her staff. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL. I would not recommend her to anyone, EVER!!!

After a CT scan revealed a renal mass, some research online informed me that I was facing an 80% chance of cancer, a statistic which was confirmed by my GP.
I was referred to Dr. Weiwei Xu by my health provider as I am a medi-​cal patient. I spent just a little over an hour in her office with her nursing staff before being seen by her, which is not an unusual wait, and her staff was very friendly and effective.
I spent just a few minutes with Dr. Xu and in that time she seemed bored and was disturbingly uninformative. She had apparently viewed my CT image in another room and informed me that because of the location of the mass a partial nephrectomy was not a viable option and that she would be removing my entire kidney (but not in so many words). She unenthusiastically, but nevertheless proceeded to answer each of my questions to the best of her ability and did not recommend a biopsy due to what she believed was a 30% chance of a false negative. She then scheduled my surgery.
I am new to this process, but several loved ones, some of which have gone through it before, suggested that it is a standard practice to get a second opinion in these matters and one recommended that I see someone at UCSF as they were helpful to them.
My experience at UCSF was wildly different. The doctor came into the room and was extremely personable. She viewed the CT scan right next to me and showed me the mass, which was the first time I had seen it in the almost 2 months of visiting doctors since the original CT was taken. She explained to me that the false negative rate had actually dropped to about 5% recently but she concurred that there was no point in a biopsy as I am just going to have the mass removed anyway. She also explained to me that she would without a doubt be performing a partial nephrectomy and preserving close to 85% of my kidney to relieve the risks of living a possibly long life with only one kidney (I am 27 years old). She explained to me why she was likely going to be performing the surgery open rather than robotically (though she appeared to be struggling with the decision as it was a borderline case). She scheduled surgery and I immediately cancelled my surgery with Dr. Xu that was scheduled for just a week from then.
Dr. Xu’s staff was extremely helpful, and I am sure that Dr. Xu herself is a qualified surgeon and would probably have removed my kidney quite effectively — however her interpersonal skills leave a bit to be desired, she was not forthcoming with information that someone who is having a serious operation and is learning that they probably have cancer should understand, and she did not seem concerned with preserving as much renal function of a young patient as possible.
From this day forth I will be a strong advocate of second opinions. I wish Dr. Xu the best on her practice and would like to thank her staff for being so kind and understanding, but I also hope that she continues to improve as a professional.

The receptionist was amazing during my appointment there. The receptionist name was named Liz and she was so helpful and kind when I was nervous about going here. She gave me the warmest welcome and gave me some pie as I waited for the MD and the most rainiest days in California. She was wonderful and very friendly and professional.

As a pregnant woman that recently experience kidney infection/​stone pain, I came to Dr. Xu for a second opinion because the initial urologist that visited me at the hospital was preselected by my ob. I picked Dr. Xu based on some good reviews i found online, Unilocal,close to home and mainly because she is a woman but she was offended and questioned my choice to come see her. Also as others mentioned, she has no compassion and does not take the time with her patients. I felt that she is unprofessional, somewhat rude and her office operates as a factory. I was the first appt after lunch so I didn’t have to wait long. She only spent no more than 10 mins with me and just when she was about to walk out then she remember to ask me if I had any other questions. I checked out and saw like 4 other patients in the waiting room. So after this experience I decided to stay with my original urologist.

If I could give her zero stars I would. My mom suffered for years with kidney stones. She was always in the ER room. They finally referred her to Dr XU Wei Wei. We were so thankful to get help. Sadly we reserved everything but that. She saw my mom many times. Each time she scheduled a surgery. She did three laser surgeries on my mom and still didn’t know what was wrong. Finally the 4^th time I said if you don’t know what’s wrong send my mom somewhere they would know. Her response was «anywhere I take you will have to wait 6 plus months» I told her I didn’t care as long as my mom got help. Which she was sent to Ucsf for help. Since Dr XU procedures were pointless. After a year my mother is in perfect condition thank you to Ucsf! DR Wei Wei called us to come back and we will never go back! Ever! If anyone needs help go to Ucsf! Not her she just wants your insurance and $$. But doesn’t care about the patient. Sadly my mom and I had to go through this and I hope no one else does.

I have going to her for a few months now and have no complaints what so ever. Never had to wait long at all. Staff is always curtious. Have always been greeted with a smile. Like another reviewer said even with uncomfortable procedures, Dr. Xu and the staff place you at ease.

Dr XU is a very good Urologist. Every procedure I have ever had in her office was done in a professional manner, the staff was great, friendly, & makes you feel at ease however awkward the treatment is. Sometimes the wait for her to enter the room to see you lasts a spell, but it is because she doesn’t rush the visit, covers all the information you need, and makes sure you understand everything about your issues. I would recommend Dr. XU for all your urological needs.

My mom has been suffering a lot these past couple of years. She has gone doctor to doctor, hospital to hospital, yet she remains in the same pain. But Dr. Xu has been to attentive and nurturing to my mother, thanks to her my mom has improved tremendously.

We came here for the first time about 25 min earlier than appointment time to ensure fast registration etc. but had to wait for about an hour just to be placed in the room to wait for md. There were obviously couple of people ahead of us, but receptionist didn’t think to let us know about any delay in seeing the doctor. We spent little over 2 hrs waiting for md that never came and just decided to leave. There was no receptionist to notify about it either. Very inconsiderate of patients and their time
