Another Carson City business bites the dust. Not sure when they closed, but it looks fairly recent. Supposedly they are going to reopen, but no more apps or bands. Just going to be a bar and maybe have some pizza(at least according to what I’ve heard). Since my friends and I like to have some apps with our beer, I’m guessing we won’t be back. Too bad because this place was great. :(

Went here for drinks and dancing. Probably one of the most«happening» places in Carson City. It was an ok experience.

So wifey and I are looking for someplace to go on a date on a Friday night. We look at the Unilocal reviews and find Doppelgangers. But Whoa — what a bunch of bad press this place got! So naturally we decide to check it out. At first we thought we’d sit in the outside patio area, but when we got there, it was packed. Even seats at the outside bar were full. Pretty unexpected for a place many gave poor reviews to. We make our way back to the inside bar area and decide to sit at the bar. We are, after all, out on a date — to have a couple adult beverages, sit and chit-chat(get caught up on our respective work weeks), and maybe have an hors-d’œuvre . The bar is well stocked and inviting. «Well stocked» to me means they have«Gentleman Jack», which they did. The bartender comes right over to us and we order two Gentleman Jack Manhattans. Turns out, this is a new bartender and he’s not sure how to make our requests. I appreciate his honesty. We tell him how to mix our favorite drink. He follows our directions to a «T» and we thoroughly enjoy our Manhattans. We ask if we can see their hors-d’œuvre menu. What luck for us that it’s «happy hour» and everything in the menu is $ 1.99. Holy crap! The selection is plentiful and varied. Most of it is deep fried fare but who cares. We don’t go out often, and everyone knows how good deep fried stuff tastes. Not good for you on a regular basis, but when it’s once in a while, again I say, who cares? We ordered a chicken strip thingie that came with fries. We also ordered the«Sliders», a threesome of small burgers(a bit bigger than the size of the mid-west’s White Castle burgers), and garlic fries. Now, it DID take a bit longer than we expected to get our food, but not THAT long. Besides, for us it’s about our time together and what we do with it, not how long it does or doesn’t take for food to come. We had NO other plans for the evening. I can see making this an issue if you’ve got movie tickets or some other time-sensitive activity lined up, but we didn’t. When our stuff came, it was scrumptious. All of it. The little Angus burgers were to die for. If this is the same meat that goes into a regular burger here, I’m getting one next time. MAN, these were good! And the garlic fries? As they used to say(and still may) at Dairy Queen, «scrumdillyiscious». Greasy? Yup. They are, after all, deep fried. The bartender was extremely friendly, and when time allowed, chatty when we asked him a couple questions about the restaurant. We were near the waitress station on the bar, and even the floor waitress was fun to talk to in between her orders. All in all, we had a great time here, and will go back without a moments hesitation. I sometimes think if people read the reviews before they make THEIR review, it can skew their opinion to lean in the ‘general’ direction that others lean. And, when we go somewhere, we’re LOOKING for the good, not the bad. There is a lot of good here, and a little bad if you look for it. I would definitely recommend Doppelgangers to friends, with the caveat that food doesn’t show up as quickly as McDonald’s or Taco Bell. If you’re in a hurry, go to a fast food joint. If you just want some good grub, good noisy atmosphere, lots of TV’s on the wall, good drinks, and friendly folks, give this place a go. We didn’t try any of their beers so we can’t comment on that. Maybe next time. [Added on 10−2 – 10] We went back last night for a return visit. We were disappointed to find that the kitchen will be closed for remodeling for a while, so no ‘sliders’, which is why we went in the first place. So, we ordered the usual Gentleman Jack Manhattans and discussed our next plan. After all, we were out for beverages and din-din. Someone mentioned that they WERE making pizza(not sure how that’s done without a kitchen, but…). So we got the pizza menu and ordered the small«Amatraciana» selection. WOW! Was THAT ever a good choice! We called some friends and asked them to stop by, which they did, and the party was on. And so, once again a great fun evening at Doppelgangers.

This place was absolutely awful!!! Keep in mind that we arrived here around 6pm on a Tuesday night. Lets start with the service, the waitress was rude, and acted like me being there was an inconvenience to her. She was very haughty and did not know the«new» menu so she couldn’t answer any questions about things on the menu. Lastly it took 30 minutes to get our food when there was one other couple in the restaurant ordering food, everyone else(like 5 people) were drinking at the bar. The atmosphere was dark and dingy, and smelled of stale cigarettes. Then I guess there was going to be a concert there later that night at 10 pm, and a band came in and just started pounding on instruments. Mind you this was not suppose to be music, it really sounded like they were just trying to annoying.(I am 23, and I don’t normally mind loud music, but it sounded like a 3 year old trying to make as much noise with pots and pans.) The«music» was soo loud I could no longer make conversation with the person sitting across the table from me. The food when it finally arrived was awful!!! I ordered a burger, when it arrived it was sitting in the middle of a puddle of grease, and it was cold, like it had been sitting on a counter for 20 minutes. The beer was okay, nothing to rave over, and they had hardly any beers available. The only good thing about this place was the french fries. They were actually pretty good, but not good enough to have to deal with all of that all over again!!! Don’t even think about going here unless you like bad food, sub par beer, awful wait staff, and gross atmosphere.

Downside: Their craft beers were okay. Service was terrible. I’m always amazed when wait staff and bartenders act like they’re doing you a favor when asking for a cocktail. Had a BLT with fries. Although the BLT was good, the grease from the fries gave me and other guests serious indigestion which suggests it’s full of trans-fats. I’m still feeling it 15 hours later! Bring pepto! Serious smoke will fill your lungs, hair, clothing and butt crack, so be prepared. Upside: Watched a great cover/country band(Jeremy Lesley). They rocked the house and made for a great time. Loved their original tune, «Cowgirl Tough». Check em out.

We wandered here looking for a bite to eat around 930 on a Saturday night. The good was good– the Cajun shrimp skewers were yummy and came in a HUGE portion. Service was decent; I really can’t complain. We had to finish our drinks at the bar because the restaurant portion closes at ten pm. I didn’t really mind– there was a dj playing some fun music, but the ventilation system leaves much to be desired. As a nonsmoker and asthmatic, I was forced to leave earlier than I wanted to. Still, if you’re not bothered by smoke, check it out. It’s a fun time. :)

A sure way to get a lousy review is to make your reviewer have to get his own menus, and KEEP talking to the barkeeper as I walk past and go, «Um, I’ll just take a these back to our table if that’s OK.» That’s two stars, gone, zip, forever. OK, on to the food. The food wasn’t actually too bad. Nice selection, my cheeseburger was done correctly(medium rare) and the french fries– thin shoestring jobs– were done perfectly. Bravo on the fries. I thought the burger had good flavor and some relatively fresh-tasting ingredients. My bride ordered a pita sandwich was was, strangely, served open face. OK, people. A sandwich is two pieces of bread with an interesting center. If there is only one piece of bread, it’s an open-faced sandwich, and should be stated so very clearly, and in no uncertain terms. I’m probably being too picky here. She also observed that as I was eating my burger I had a nice run of grease flowing down my palm and heading for my wrist. Now I ask you, when does«juice» become«grease?» There has to be a dividing line somewhere, and we all know a juicy burger is a coveted burger. I maintain that«grease» is, in fact, an integral part of «juice» and possibly even vice versa. This is a subject which needs to be dealt with at length. Later. If you’re in here getting soused, I would imagine the food would be exceptional, since you’d be drunk. If you’re sober, you will probably find the food and service to be exceptionally mediocre but not altogether unpleasant. They do have outside seating, with pleasant little water-misters for hot days and the gas furnace thingies for cold days. I thought it was quite comfortable and not crowded just ten or twenty minutes after noon today.

As many have said this place is not terribly good. The pizza is sub-par and worse than grocery frozen pizza and the appetizers are not very creative.

Not good, I went there once and they said cooked to order burgers were no problem. I said call it what you want just make sure its good and pink in the middle. Shows up and its dark in the middle, but somewhat juicy, I reject it. The server also commented it was over done since it was not pink as we discussed. After a bit the server comes back and says that the chef said to tell me «its „Black Angus Meat“ so it is supposed to look different, and the first one was done properly» WTF!!! I asked her if he was not doing anything different(since he said it’s done correctly) then he’s wasting his time, since I would not eat it either. She says just try it if you don’t want it that’s fine. it shows up… same thing, but now I have it figured out. they were working off OLDMEAT !!! it was oxidized. I eat that at home just before it goes bad, But no way am I accepting that at a restaurant, and they should be using it for meat balls at the worst. actually they should be throwing it out if I understand health regulations. when she was sent to tell be «Its Black Angus» etc. I almost asked her WTF, what color does the genius chef think it bleeds? light grey? Not the first time I had a crappy meal there… I paid for my beer and left, IMO they could have offered to comp my 1 beer after all that, since it costs them .40 cents to make a pint of beer, And I sat there 30 minutes with no food that anyone would eat. I would have tipped then, but as it was I paid for the beer they wanted money for. I could not see tipping on 2(unsafe) and rejected burgers. The head chef lady there was not the one on shift as far as I know, but the food in general is simply not as good as they act like it is, not even close. she seems super nice to see her walking around, but she is not as good as she or management thinks she is. The beer has improved over the last year, but it used to suck(Flat) and now its only barely OK. The guy in the beginning would ask you what you thought of the beer, then you would tell him and he would promptly start telling you that you don’t know what your talking about… Why even ask me then? I think that overconfident tool is gone now? He was a jerk And if you are going to have one of those«themes» where on your menu you talk about sassy servers and snippy wait staff being part of your charm, you better be doing things spot on. When you go for that reverse snotty image as a tongue in cheek theme and you do so much wrong, it makes you look stupid and arrogant. I drive right by now…

I came to visit my friend in Carson City, and we decided to try Doppelgangers for lack of a better idea. First, we seat ourselves and get carded by two separate waitresses/bartenders. No big deal… kind of flattering. After getting carded and ordering a beer sampler we waited for a good 10 – 15 minutes to get the beer and to place our order. This should have been a sign that we should leave and go elsewhere. Normally, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but there were only 3 other parties in the whole resturaunt. So, we both ordered sandwiches, her’s with fries, mine with pasta salad. About 30 minutes later they came out. The food was decent(eventhough they forgot the alvacado on my sandwich). I don’t think I would go back though. Once we were done eating, we noticed a cute little dog in the brewing area of the resturaunt. I think it was the brewmasters. I am all for bringing your pet to work, but only if you work in an office or somewhere that is not serving food! I’m half tempted to give them 1 star, but the dog was pretty cute! :)

This place has the worst food ever. Their italian egg rolls are different and they’re alright the first time but the oilyness gets sickening after a while. If you take a bite and create an opening in the egg roll you’d be able to pour the oil out. Their garlic breadsticks were cold and the alfredo sauce it came with was kind of sour. The stuffed mushrooms were bitter. Never had stuffed mushrooms like that before. We also tried the pizza and it was definitely nothing special. Again, oily as heck, flavor was not good. Avoid this place at all costs unless you’re going for the beer pong at night! You’ll thank me.

I think the description for the two-star rating is perfect, «Meh. I’ve experienced better.» I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Doppelgangers is bad. I wouldn’t say they were good either. The first time I went here I just came for a couple beers and we ordered an appetizer(nacho cheese dip with chips). Mind you that this is a Brewery, and so they don’t serve you typical domestic beers(I didn’t know this going in.) The beer was just ok; I probably wouldn’t buy it if I saw in the stores. The appetizer seemed like it was sitting under the heat lamp for a little bit too long because a crust had started to form on the top of the cheese. And I don’t exactly know what was in there besides the nacho cheese, but it seemed like there were carrots, tomatoes, and other random vegetables. The second time I went here was for lunch. I ordered the chicken salad on a croissant. It was ok, but the chicken salad wasn’t exactly what I expected. I normally think of chicken salad as being creamy, but this barely had anything to bind everything together. And I could have gone for a little bit more flavor. I like the outside patio, the inside is apparently a club at night(or weekends?) so it smells like cigarettes and basically what you would expect a club to smell like. So I don’t think that I would really want to eat inside. Service isn’t especially fast here, so don’t expect to get in and out quickly.

Restaurant by day, brewery by night, meat market Friday and Saturday nights. The food is great. They have their own pizzeria area and it serves some hard to beat pies. They also have standard sports bar /American type food like hot wings and meatball subs, and pretty good Italian. I really like the calamari(huge portion). You can’t really go wrong here. I usually play it safe going to a new restaurant. If it’s Italian, I go for the pasta alfredo, and pretty much anywhere else I start off with chicken strips and just sample braver peoples food. This is just to give you an idea of how many time I’ve eaten chicken strips. I never get Italian food unless the restaurant is only Italian, so naturally I opt for the chicken strips. OMFG. These were without question the best chicken strips I have ever had. No other chicken strip has come close. They are uniquely hand breaded kind of like a cross between the beer battered chicken dippers at Chili’s and your traditional casino snack bar chicken strips, with an added Italian zing. They are on special on Tuesdays. Did I mention they were a brewery? Yep. Don’t expect a Coors or Bud server here. They may not carry your standard convenience store schwag, but you won’t be disappointed. I have tried 4 or 5 of their blends, and must say that they are very good. I’m not much of a beer drinker, so I was happy when they carried my favorite spirit, Bombay Sapphire. I’ve heard it was one of those«newly 21» bars late on Friday and Saturday and gets kinda crazy, but that’s not my thing so I haven’t been there for that. They have live music or a DJ always posted when I’m there. There is one bad thing with this place. The bartenders. Wow. They seem to not care that there are 3 people waiting to get service and keep filling their ice, talking, watching TV, etc. Anything but serve drinks. Just sit a a table and the waitress will get them instead.
